Each year about 90% of world trade is transported by ship, according to the World Economic Forum. With its fleet of over 670 vessels, Maersk , one of the world's largest shipping companies, transports about one in five of those containers. The company logged record profits in 2022 due in part to pandemic-induced buying and higher freight rates. It also chartered the vessel that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore earlier this week. CNBC examines the issues facing Maersk, and its rivals Hapag-Lloyd and MSC, and looks at how the company is trying to transition for future growth.

The shift in the volume of freight being moved from the East Coast to the West Coast was first highlighted in February in the ITS Port Rail Ramp Freight Index. He said the disruptions from the Suez Canal and Panama Canal have contributed to an almost 20% increase into the West Coast ports. "For our ports, transloading containers is always going to happen and we have the capacity to do more." The West Coast container volume rebound will also have a ceiling. "We probably don't get to the historical 10-year levels of West Coast market share versus East Coast share," Chan said.

Russia's oil infrastructure took another hit as drones targeted refineries in the Samara region. The targeted refineries, both part of Rosneft PJSC's Samara region group, play a crucial role in Russia's oil production landscape. The strikes have targeted refineries, storage depots, and other key sites, exacerbating economic pain and raising fears of further escalation. Indeed, the refineries targeted in the Samara oblast last night are over 800 miles from Kyiv.

Countries at the meeting of the United Nations' International Maritime Organization in London signed a deal for shipping emissions to reach net zero "by or around" 2050. Ucg | Universal Images Group | Getty ImagesTwo weeks of talks at the United Nations shipping agency concluded in London on Friday, with a clear majority of countries emerging in favor of introducing the world's first-ever global emissions levy. The UN is on the edge of adopting the world's first-ever global emissions price, but the policy will only be as successful as countries make it to be. "The UN is on the edge of adopting the world's first-ever global emissions price, but the policy will only be as successful as countries make it to be," said Sandra Chiri, shipping emissions international outreach manager at the Ocean Conservancy, a U.S.-based advocacy group. Just because the current valuation backdrop isn't as extreme as 1999-2000, we are still in a market bubble, and valuations are even more stretched today than they were at the market peaks in 2007, 1990, and 1980." Even though Russia may dwarf a small state, that doesn't guarantee a successful airport seizure. Stringer points to a special airport defense regiment that Switzerland stationed at Zurich Airport during the Cold War, as a good model. During 2022-2023, ocean carriers used some of those reserves for their own buying sprees to expand their footprints. While adding to the ocean carrier bunker fuel costs, they are being compensated.. "The Red Sea diversions are a good thing for ocean carriers. The big question mark is the duration of the diversions and the surcharges the ocean carriers can charge. Those two regions have steadily taken market share away from the West Coast ports, with shippers also benefitting from investments in ports infrastructure. Uber is going into the Dow Transports on Monday, marking the first change to the index since Dec. 7, 2021, when Old Dominion replaced Kansas City Southern. Under Dow Theory, the Transports should confirm a new high in the Dow Industrials. Uber is a funny add because unlike many of the other index components, it's not really a shipping company. The add likely reflects the Dow Transports index committee's belief that this is a transportation company, even if it just shuttles people instead of packages. This follows a well-known pattern called the S & P inclusion effect.

Walgreens has the dubious distinction of being one of the stocks that has had the shortest duration in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. At $22, Walgreens has the lowest stock price in the index, which traditionally would make it a target for replacement. "Since the indexes are price weighted, the Index Committee evaluates stock price when considering a company for inclusion. Right now, the highest priced stock, UnitedHealth Group , is more than 23 times the value of the lowest priced stock, Walgreens. Finally, one wonders how Uber executives feel about the decision to put them into the Dow Jones Transportation Index.

Maxar Technologies Visual Investigations The $2.8 Billion Hole in U.S. Sanctions on Iran A Times investigation reveals how lax government oversight allowed shadowy oil tankers, covered by American insurance, to fund Iran’s regime. The American Club is one of only 12 major insurers of its kind, and the only one based in the United States. By then, the tankers had transported at least $2.8 billion in crude oil, based on the lowest reported prices of Iranian oil in 2023. The Treasury office has publicly enforced sanctions on the American Club only once in the past 20 years. Ultimately, the office said the American Club did “not appear to have been willful or reckless” and the case was settled.

Moller-Maersk, the second-largest global ocean carrier, is advising customers to prepare for a Red Sea crisis that could stretch well into the second half of this year. "Unfortunately, we don't see any change in the Red Sea happening anytime soon," Charles van der Steene, regional president for Maersk North America, tells CNBC. After attacks on two U.S.-flagged Maersk vessels on January 24, the Maersk Detroit and Maersk Chesapeake, Maersk Line, Limited — a U.S. subsidiary of Maersk, which operates U.S.-flagged vessels independently — announced it would no longer traverse the Red Sea. The global shipping and logistics company's cautious view of the Red Sea safety conditions comes despite a U.S.-led multinational military operation in the region, Operation Prosperity Guardian. "Our advice to our customers is specifically about building upon the uncertainty by being agile," said van der Steene.

The problem underscores a widely held consensus that Virginia’s mental health care system is in urgent need of reform, due to what Gov. Improving mental health care became a priority in the U.S. like never before as the pandemic brought new levels of isolation, fear and grief, in addition to pre-existing crises such as rising drug overdose deaths and the struggles burdening teen girls. Survey data from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that in 2022, about half of adults with any mental illness did not receive treatment. Elsewhere in the U.S., states' policy concerns and approaches to improving mental health care have varied. Mental health was listed as a budget priority in most states in an analysis by the National Association of State Budget Officers.

The Dow Jones Transportation Average, which tracks 20 US transportation stocks from railroads to airlines to delivery, has fallen 1.6% so far this year, underperforming the broader Dow industrials’ 2.2% gain. As that optimism dims, some investors worry that the decline in transportation stocks suggests rough times ahead for the economy. The transportation index tends to fall when the economy deteriorates, as demand for travel and goods wanes. Turmoil in the airline industry also likely contributed to the recent slide in transportation stocks. But net profit fell 14% to €4.9 billion ($5.3 billion) as its tax bill rose.

The modest revenue growth announced Thursday as part of Apple’s October-December results ended four consecutive quarters of year-over-year sales declines. As usual, the iPhone accounted for the bulk of Apple’s revenue. Apple’s services division, which is tied largely to the iPhone, posted an 11% rise in revenue from the previous year to $23.12 billion. This rush is something that Britain’s King Charles III, admitted to a London hospital on Friday, might have encountered prior to his decision to undergo prostate surgery. A mildly enlarged prostate can cause noticeable symptoms such as a weaker stream when urinating or increased frequency, especially at night. There are effective medical and surgical options to improve your condition if an enlarged prostate is affecting your daily life. In managing an enlarged prostate, several medical options are available, each tailored to the severity of symptoms and the patient’s overall health. Prostate lift: The minimally invasive procedure uses small implants to lift and hold enlarged prostate tissue, thus unblocking urine flow.
