Simone Biles has another name for the U.S. gymnastics team’s participation in the Paris Games: the redemption tour. The team finals on Tuesday will be an important stop. At the Tokyo Games, the U.S. women’s team was a favorite to win, but it ended up with silver, behind Russia, after Biles withdrew from the final because of a mental block. That ended the United States’ streak of consecutive team victories at the London Games in 2012 and in Rio in 2016. Now Biles, who is anchoring the team on three of the four events in the final, said the team was ready to return to the top.

But, as events this week in Paris have once again shown, when it comes to women’s skating, Japan’s teenage girls are on fire. Fourteen-year-old Coco Yoshizawa’s late surge helped her beat compatriot Liz Akama, 15, to the gold medal at La Concorde Urban Park, Paris on Sunday. Sakura Yosozumi, then 19, and Kokona Hiraki, then 12, topped the 2021 Tokyo women’s park event. “Since there’s no age limit for skateboarding at the Olympics, any youngsters can compete,” Hiraki, the youngest Olympic medalist since 1936, told CNN in July. The team final on Tuesday will be an important stop. The three other gymnasts competing in the team final — including the defending all-around champion Sunisa Lee — are all competing at their second Summer Games. How it works: The team final consists of three gymnasts competing on all events — and every score counts — so there is no room for error. Biles rebounds: Biles finished first in the all-around in team qualifying, despite dealing with pain in her left calf that her coach, Cécile Canqueteau-Landi, said had been nagging Biles for weeks. Americans dominate: The U.S. team finished more than 5 points ahead of the second-place Italy in team qualifying, with China and Brazil very close behind, in third and fourth.

CNN —The most diverse US women’s gymnastics team in history will begin competing this weekend at the Olympic Games, inspiring younger gymnasts in the process. But far from Paris, at James Jones Gymnastics Academy (JJGA) in Jonesboro, Georgia, everyone — from the eponymous Jones himself to his gymnasts – are Black. The gym owner and coach said seeing this year’s diverse Olympic team competing at the highest level in a sport where their race has been underrepresented is inspiring. “It makes me feel wonderful,” Jones told CNN. The Olympics Have Arrived

It has been only three years since the last summer Olympics: the 2020 Tokyo Games, you’ll recall, were held in the summer of 2021. Now the Olympics return with untold opportunities to geek out on sports you haven’t thought about for several years, or ever. Broadcast coverage of the Olympics makes this transformation easy. I’m a total sucker for a hyperemotional documentary featurette on that gymnast whose family sacrificed everything for her Olympic dreams. “One of the strangest things I’ve ever seen an animal do,” Alex had told me, and I concurred.
