High-profile strikes by writers and actors against Hollywood brought the union power to the mainstream as pictures of celebrities holding picket signs flooded social media. But one big win continues to elude labor: the need to translate its rising popularity into an increase in rank-and-file union membership, which has stagnated in recent decades. It's not a lack of support from the public that's holding unions back from making more progress in growing their ranks. Even before the big wins of 2023, polling conducted in recent years showed rising union popularity, with support at its highest level since 1965, according to 2022 data from Gallup. 'The Great Reset'In 2023, it was a banner year for American workers who support the labor movement.

"Starting today, Google Cloud customers who wish to stop using Google Cloud and migrate their data to another cloud provider and/or on premises, can take advantage of free network data transfer to migrate their data out of Google Cloud," Amit Zavery, a Google cloud vice president, wrote in the post. In 2018, Cloudflare announced the Bandwidth Alliance, a group of companies, including some cloud providers, that reduce or eliminate those data transfer, or egress, fees. "Restrictive licensing practices remain a far bigger issue to customers who want the choice of working with their preferred cloud provider," the spokesperson said. By making transfer free, Google could be pressuring rivals to follow suit or risk losing out on new business prospects. Last year Google expressed concerns about Microsoft's cloud practices to officials in the U.S. and the European Union.

Helping these countries, which face some of the biggest risks from climate change, access these will be a key aim during the COP28 climate talks underway in Dubai. Ambitions for results at COP28 got off to a good start on the opening day on Thursday when countries approved plans for the climate disaster fund, after months of negotiations. About 60% of low-income countries are either in or at high risk of debt distress, the CDP said. REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 22 (Reuters) - New vehicle sales in the United States are expected to rise in November, a report from industry consultants showed on Wednesday, as demand for the latest models remains strong and inventories improve. U.S. new vehicle sales, including retail and non-retail transactions, are estimated to reach 1,236,000 units in November, a 10.2% jump from a year earlier, according to the joint forecast report by J.D. "Sales growth is being enabled by improving vehicle availability," said Thomas King, president of the data and analytics division at J.D. Inventory pile-up, however, led to a 1.9% year-on-year decline in transaction prices with an average price of new retail vehicles at $45,332. Power and GlobalData have also raised the annual forecast for global light-vehicle sales to 89.3 million units, up 10% from last year, on strength in China demand.

New York CNN —The United Automobile Workers’ won big wage and benefit gains in tentative contract agreements with Ford, General Motors and Stellantis. Now, non-union companies are rushing to give their non-unionized workers raises, too. Toyota said it’s raising wages by more than 9%, and Honda announced 11% wage hikes beginning next year. While the auto companies didn’t directly attribute their raises to the UAW, the UAW has said it will be targeting non-union factories in the wake of its big wins. UAW President Shawn Fain already encouraged non-union autoworkers to join the UAW, and Fain has called the non-union wage increases the “UAW bump.” The UAW hopes its new contracts with Detroit automakers will inspire other workers to unionize.

But there was one topic Mr. Gilani was always wary of raising: The treatment of Palestinians. Instead it was attributed to “Muslim, Palestinian and Arab Google employees joined by anti-Zionist Jewish colleagues.” The New York Times discussed the matter with seven Google employees and reviewed messages posted in employee channels for this article. Google said the acrimony described to The Times by both Muslim and Jewish employees was limited to a small group of its many thousands of workers. “The overwhelming majority of those employees are not engaged in internal discussions or debate.”Google isn’t unique in facing this turmoil. Even compared with its Silicon Valley peers, Google has become a hub for employee activism, a legacy of the company’s open and informal founding culture.

The situation is not yet fully resolved, and it’s unclear just how many banks were affected, although Bank of America, Chase and US Bank have confirmed they are among them. That would include an overdraft fee from your bank if a payment was made from your account before an expected deposit showed up. But if it’s not, contact your bank and let them know the situation needs to be corrected. You also want to avoid a late fee or penalty interest from a creditor if your payment got delayed. “The key is providing verifiable documentation that the delay was not your fault.”At the moment it’s not clear whether or how every affected bank is notifying their customers.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ken Mattingly, an astronaut who is best remembered for his efforts on the ground that helped bring the damaged Apollo 13 spacecraft safely back to Earth, has died, NASA announced. However, The New York Times reported that Mattingly died in Arlington, Virginia. He helped with development of the spacesuit and backpack for the Apollo moon missions, NASA said. In 1970, Mattingly was supposed to have joined the crew of Apollo 13, piloting the command module. Apollo 13's story was told in the 1994 book “Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13,” co-authored by Lovell, and in the 1995 movie “Apollo 13,” where Gary Sinise played Mattingly.

But the UAW’s ambitious plans to organize Tesla and other non-union automakers face steep odds. To grow, the UAW will need to gain a foothold at non-union automakers, which produce more than half of the cars assembled in the United States. Historically, UAW talks with the Detroit automakers have been closely watched by non-union automakers and suppliers. Anti-union companiesThe UAW will have to overcome weak protections for labor organizing in the United States and automakers’ aggressive tactics to defeat unions. It may be easier for UAW to organize Volkswagen and other European automakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz than automakers from Asia, experts say.

DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union turned up the heat on General Motors as 5,000 workers walked off their jobs Tuesday at a highly profitable SUV factory in Arlington, Texas. The additional plants further escalate a labor dispute that's in its sixth week and now has about 46,000 union workers off the job. “It’s time GM workers, and the whole working class, get their fair share,” Fain said. Barra said GM’s record offer rewards employees but doesn’t put the company or UAW jobs at risk. Last week GM made an offer that increased its previous offer by about 25% in total value, the company said.

A view of a Nvidia logo at their headquarters in Taipei, Taiwan May 31, 2023. U.S. officials asked for input in devising a "tamperproof" way to keep systems that might contain up to 256 AI chips from being strung together into a supercomputer. The other primary gift that U.S. officials gave Nvidia, Intel and AMD was hobbling their most capable Chinese competitors. New rules will make it nearly impossible for Moore Threads and Biren, two well-funded Chinese startups founded by Nvidia veterans, to have their designs manufactured using cutting-edge chipmaking technology. That means whatever Nvidia is able to sell to China will likely be Chinese buyers' best legal option.

A WSJ survey showed the consensus probability of a downturn in the next year dipped below 50% for the first time since mid-2022.
