Determining the best predictors of stock-market returns is like seeking the Holy Grail for investors. They also allowed the algorithm to come up with its own ratios in an attempt to determine whether there are better indicators of stock-market performance. Examples of variables included sales, market value, and cost of goods. The data points were then scaled using ratios to correlate a company's sales revenue to other variables, such as its size. Robbins noted that traditionally, academics begin with a theory for why certain company fundamentals could be good predictors of stock market returns before testing them.

Another key component was DNA from a living descendant of Samuel Washington. Samuel Washington, George Washington's younger brother, was buried in an unmarked grave at the cemetery at his Harewood estate (an interior view is pictured above) near Charles Town, West Virginia. Fortunately for the authors of the new study, “DNA analysis has come a long way since the early 2000s,” Cavagnino said. Further details came from 95,000 SNPs, an enormous volume of data targeting autosomal DNA (DNA that isn’t attached to sex chromosomes). “The search for Samuel Washington’s grave is no longer underway,” Marshall said.

New York CNN —The “Buffett Indicator” is flashing red. If the stock market is growing a lot faster than the economy, that could be a sign of a bubble. Outside of his MAGA movement, though, the social media site is struggling to find a wider audience. Owner Drew Echols, a fifth-generation farmer, said it has become harder to predict when fruits like the iconic Georgia peaches would start blooming. Blooming peach trees are seen alongside a covered field of strawberries at Jaemor Farms in Alto, Georgia, on March 19, 2024. The fruits begin to bloom as temperatures warm, but when a cold spell comes back, they become susceptible to damage. Truth Social owner Trump Media will begin trading Tuesday as the merger closesCNN —Investors have approved a deal on Friday to make Truth Social owner Trump Media a publicly traded company. The new company will be called Trump Media & Technology Group and trade under the ticker DJT, Trump’s initials. Shareholders voted to approve Trump Media’s merger with a blank-check company, following years of legal and regulatory obstacles. Trump will own a dominant stake in a public company, with shares worth more than $3 billion at current market prices. First, experts say the market is drastically overvaluing Trump Media based on the company’s fundamentals.

The project, known as Direct File and launched by the IRS on a limited basis in 12 states this tax season, is in its pilot phase. Derek Wheeler, director of the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic at the University of Florida’s Law School, said his clinic has referred less than a dozen clients to the Direct File system. His legal clinic has partnered with the IRS and selectively identifies clients who may be eligible to submit their taxes through the program. One of their biggest criticisms is that free tax prep services already exist for people of all income brackets and developing the Direct File system will end up costing taxpayers billions of dollars. But after using Direct File, she said, “I feel foolish for paying all that money every year.”

Kyrsten Sinema once said she could "do anything" after leaving the Senate, according to one book. Now that she's retiring, Sinema has all kinds of get-rich-quick options available to her. According that book, Sinema told the Utah Republican that she didn't care about winning reelection, a prospect that had long been imperiled by breaking with her party on government spending and the Senate's "filibuster" rule. A tiny frog baffled scientists by growing a mushroom on its side. Whether the frog continued to live with the mushroom on its side will remain a mystery. Rao's intermediate golden-backed frog is a small frog that is endemic to India. "When I first observed the frog with the mushroom, I was amazed and intrigued by the sight," Lohit told CNN. "To the best of our knowledge, never has a mushroom sprouting from the flank of a live frog been documented," the authors said in their paper.

They Could Decide the 2024 Election. If They Vote.
  + stars: | 2024-02-25 | by ( Marcela Valdes | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Elections, historically, are decided not only by those who cast votes but also by those who don’t. President George W. Bush edged out Al Gore in the 2000 election by 537 ballots in Florida. Yet there’s a case to be made that the five million Floridians who were eligible to vote in that election but did not were the ones who really tipped the balance. According to the University of Florida Election Lab, 44 percent of citizens who were eligible to vote in 2020 did not. But in any given election, those who stay home or tune out may change: Fully 25 percent of the ballots in 2020 were cast by people who didn’t vote in 2016.

If shareholders approve the merger, it would enable Trump Media to go public and Trump to own a stake worth about $4 billion. In the US, a political party’s presidential nominee has never owned a major media platform worth so much. Furthermore, the possibility of this added Truth Social muscle for Trump arrives as right-wing MAGA messaging finds more outlets at the national and grassroots levels. And, while Trump has stuck with Truth Social, X has become a haven for right-wing conspiracies of all kinds. MAGA-friendly, right-wing media is growing at the grassroots level as well.

Oil prices spiked last month following US-led strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen in response to repeated attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea. One factor that could be keeping the cap on oil prices is waning demand. “Global oil demand growth is losing momentum,” said the agency in its February report. While global oil demand growth is slowing, supply has stayed relatively strong, potentially putting further downward pressure on oil prices. “Higher global oil supply this year, led by the United States, Brazil, Guyana and Canada, should more than eclipse the expected rise in world oil demand,” said the report.

New York CNN —Months after leaving the White House, former President Donald Trump began plotting his return to Wall Street. US regulators have finally given the green light to a controversial merger between Truth Social owner Trump Media & Technology Group and a blank-check company. ‘This is a meme stock’Moreover, there are major questions about the sky-high valuation being placed on this media company. He described that valuation as “crazy” because Trump Media is generating little revenue and burning through cash. One of the final remaining hurdles is for Digital World shareholders to approve the merger in an upcoming vote.

The work brought Mann, then at Penn State but now at University of Pennsylvania, wide exposure. Kate Cell, whose work as senior climate campaign manager at The Union of Concerned Scientists includes tracking climate disinformation, said Mann's case is well-known among other climate scientists. A 2023 poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 91% of Democrats believe climate change is happening, while only 52% of Republicans do. Many scientists have followed Mann’s case for years as misinformation about climate change has grown and many of them have themselves been subjected to attacks. Lidsky was skeptical that Mann’s case would have any broader significance, particularly on social media.

Jay Ritter, a finance professor at the University of Florida, expressed shock at the stock spike for Digital World.
