London CNN —Coaches will no longer be allowed to weigh gymnasts under one of several policies designed to tackle reports of “bullying, harassment and excessive control” in the sport in the UK. Gymnasts also must not be forced to miss formal education classes for gymnastics training under the new policies. Conducted by barrister Anne Whyte, the review concluded that British Gymnastics should have been aware of the “bullying, harassment and excessive control” that occurred in training clubs between 2008 and 2020. In the 2022 report, Whyte highlighted the “recruitment of a significant number of coaches” from the former Soviet Union and the Soviet bloc. In British Gymnastics’ Wednesday statement, Powell said: “Above all else, we care about gymnasts as people, and these new policies make clear that what matters most in gymnastics is the welfare of those involved.

Formula One set to change sprint format for 2024
  + stars: | 2023-11-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The governing FIA said on Friday its Sporting Advisory Committee would present a final proposal to the F1 Commission in January. "The Commission gave overall support for an update to the sprint format for 2024 to further rationalise the weekend by separating Sprint activities from those for the Grand Prix," the FIA said in a statement. Six of this year's 22 rounds were sprint weekends, including the Qatar Grand Prix in which Red Bull's Max Verstappen clinched his third world title on a Saturday. The current format has qualifying for the grand prix on Friday with sprint qualifying and standalone race filling Saturday's schedule. Points could be awarded more widely for the sprint race, with a possible reverse grid element also under consideration.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Ferrari rebounded from a disastrous first day of the Las Vegas Grand Prix with a Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. sweep of Friday night qualifying. After the qualifying run, Sainz was struggling to balance the showmanship of F1's first visit to Las Vegas in 41 years and the damage to the sporting element of the biggest spectacle on the series' 22-race calendar. F1 and owner Liberty Media have spent $500 million on the race that uses the Strip and incorporates several Las Vegas landmarks. “But I see the race as a very good opportunity for F1 and I think F1, it's a good thing that's in Las Vegas and I am enjoying coming to Las Vegas. HANGZHOU, China, Sept 23 (Reuters) - China's eastern city of Hangzhou stepped up security ahead of the Asian Games opening ceremony later on Saturday as organisers hope to get the sporting extravaganza off to a smooth start with President Xi Jinping among the dignitaries set to attend. Roads in a sizeable 'traffic control area' around the city's Olympic stadium were blocked off, at least one metro station was shut, and other Games centres were closed off ahead of an opening ceremony organisers say will be "mesmerizing". Some of those making the trek out towards the stadium were left frustrated by the size of the sealed off area. Organisers hope a high-tech opening ceremony on Saturday will help drum up excitement for the Games. Discovery announced on Tuesday that it would begin adding live sporting events from the company’s cable networks to the Max streaming service in October. For several months, the sporting events will be free for all Max subscribers. Media companies are racing to figure out how to fold in live sporting events with their popular but still cash-bleeding streaming services. Recently, Charter Communications subscribers temporarily lost access to Disney’s cable networks, including ESPN, in a highly publicized dispute. Charter executives argued that Disney sought too much additional money for its cable networks even though its priority was its streaming business.
