ATLANTA (AP) — With Bill Belichick set for a second interview, the Atlanta Falcons have talked with Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn about their vacant head coaching job. The Falcons announced Friday they had completed a virtual interview with Glenn, who has led the Lions' defense for the past three seasons. Glenn became the ninth candidate to interview with the Falcons, but all eyes were on Belichick amid reports that he was the team's top choice and had flown into Atlanta on one of owner Arthur Blank's private jets for a second interview. The Falcons confirmed they were meeting further with Belichick, but said no additional details would be provided until the follow-up interview was completed. For good measure, Belichick was a part of two more championship teams while working on the New York Giants' staff under Bill Parcells.

It is a feat former President Donald Trump is trying to duplicate this year. The first true test of Trump’s comeback occurs Monday in Iowa, where caucusgoers will venture into sub-zero temperatures to choose between Trump, Florida Gov. After months of speculation, we’ll finally get some answers to a few questions: Is there an opening for any Republican aside from Trump? Most of our contributors thought Haley won Wednesday’s CNN debate in Iowa against DeSantis, but Trump’s absence from the stage again loomed large. “Haley sounded like someone looking to take on the genuine article — the Republican frontrunner,” wrote W. When Robert Kraft traded a first-round draft pick to the New York Jets in 2000 in exchange for the right to hire Bill Belichick, N.F.L. insiders considered it “an awfully steep price,” as one put it, and a journalist mocked him for being “snookered.”Convinced that Belichick was a coaching savant, Kraft ignored the naysayers. He had an undistinguished record as a head coach, and Kraft was a relatively new owner of a franchise that had never won a championship. Hours before Belichick’s first game as head coach of the New England Patriots on Sept. 3, 2000, he gave Kraft a gift: a vintage print of Ted Williams and Babe Ruth. On a nondescript card, Belichick scribbled, “Thanks for giving me the opportunity to coach your team.

___The Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers haven't let last season's postseason disappointment become a hangover in 2023. Both teams head into Sunday's rematch of last season's NFC title game with a chance to turn those recent failures into success. The Eagles are the fourth team in NFL history to win at least 10 of their first 11 games in back-to-back seasons. The Eagles and 49ers are currently the top two seeds in the NFC, setting the stage for a rare possible NFC title game rematch. When the New England Patriots routinely churned out double-digit win seasons, Bill Belichick ’s march toward becoming the NFL’s winningest coach ever seemed like an inevitability. But the team’s recent nosedive has put him on the verge of a less desirable record: most all-time losses. The Patriots’ loss to the Giants on Sunday marked a new low for the franchise under Belichick. Their offense remained helpless, even against one of the NFL’s worst teams, and it dropped them to 2-9 on the season. It also added the 161st regular-season loss to his ledger, putting him four shy of the historic mark.

CNN —Tom Brady may have called time on his football career, but that hasn’t stopped him from keeping a close eye on the NFL this season. Asked why he felt that way, Brady added: “I think the coaching isn’t as good as it was. “I think the rules have allowed a lot of bad habits to get into the actual performance of the game. It’s not up to a defensive player to protect an offensive player. Skewed the game so that players don’t have to be as skilled to be productive.”

Apple TV+ is a small but influential player in the streaming wars. And Apple has signaled it wants to grow its streaming content slate at a time when other media companies are contracting. Apple is "always looking" for films that "highlight humanity," according to one of the agency documents. As a side hustle of a massive retail business, Apple TV+ can fly under the radar, insulated from economic pressures that have roiled the entertainment business. (Apple TV+ was the first streamer to win the best picture Oscar, in 2022, for "CODA," which it acquired at the Sundance Film Festival).

MAYWOOD, Ill. (AP) — Former NFL player Sergio Brown, charged with killing his mother, bought a one-way ticket to Cancun, Mexico, after being the last person seen with the woman before her slaying last month, a prosecutor said Wednesday. Brown, who faces charges of first-degree murder and concealing a homicide, appeared in court for a detention hearing Wednesday before Cook County Judge Teresa Molina-Gonzalez, who denied him pretrial release. The body of his mother, Myrtle Brown, was discovered Sept. 16 near a creek in Maywood, about 12 miles (19 kilometers) west of Chicago. Brown, 35, and his 73-year-old mother lived together in Maywood. The cellphones of Brown and his mother showed they were near the same location at the estimated time of her death, Villarreal said.
