Internal company documents reveal Optum is deploying “rigorous utilization management” in response to an increased need for ABA therapy. With the diminished hours of treatment, Benji grew increasingly disruptive. “We’ll let it go,” she warned with a sugared voice, “but hands to self, OK?”Benji works with registered behavioral technician Hortencia Cervantez during ABA treatment. Even though Optum denied the additional hours of treatment, Benji has continued to receive them. Internal documents show Optum is aiming to exclude from its network about 40% of Louisiana groups that offer ABA therapy.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —South Korea’s parliament voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol on Saturday in an extraordinary rebuke that came about after his own ruling party turned on him following his refusal to resign over his short-lived martial law attempt. Soldiers try to enter the National Assembly building in Seoul on December 4, after Yoon's declaration of martial law. The following day, South Korean police raided the presidential office, a presidential security official confirmed to CNN. Last week, South Korean prosecutors detained former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun, who allegedly recommended the martial law imposition and resigned in the wake of the scandal. Senior government officials have testified at various government hearings over the last week revealing some extraordinary details about the night of the martial law order.

ABC News has agreed to pay $15 million toward Donald Trump's presidential library to settle a lawsuit over anchor George Stephanopoulos' inaccurate on-air assertion that the president-elect had been found civilly liable for raping writer E. Jean Carroll. In a statement, ABC News said: "We are pleased that the parties have reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit on the terms in the court filing." Last year, Trump was found liable for sexually assaulting and defaming Carroll and was ordered to pay her $5 million. In January, he was found liable on additional defamation claims and ordered to pay Carroll $83.3 million. The judge said the verdict did not mean that Carroll "failed to prove that Mr. Trump 'raped' her as many people commonly understand the word 'rape.'

CNN —TikTok has plans for another appeal as it faces a ban on January 19. The latest ruling follows last week’s decision by the same appeals court to uphold the law, citing national security concerns. The Supreme Court could make a quick decision on the case. “I have trouble thinking that the conservative force on the Supreme Court would not see this as a (national) security case,” Schiller said. He said in July (in a video posted to the app) that he would “never ban TikTok” — although he did try to ban it during his first term.

The former Indiana University basketball team doctor accused of sexually assaulting players back in the 1990s invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination dozens of times during a recent deposition when he was asked whether he performed rectal examinations on young athletes, according to the transcript of his testimony. Neither Knight, who died last year at age 83, nor Bomba are listed as defendants. Mujezinovic and Miller said in the lawsuit that they “were routinely and repeatedly subjected to medically unnecessary, invasive, and abusive digital rectal examinations” by Bomba. Bomba had played football for Indiana University and was nicknamed “Frankenstein” by coaches and players “due to the large size of his hands and fingers,” the lawsuit added. Mujezinovic, who spent two seasons at Indiana from 1995 to 1997, and Miller, who played for the Hoosiers from 1994 through 1998, are seeking unspecified damages.

President-elect Donald Trump has been ordered to spend part of the week before Christmas being grilled by lawyers in his defamation case against ABC News. Trump has thus far not made himself available for a recorded deposition — to the apparent chagrin of the defense team. “I can understand your frustration,” U.S. Magistrate Judge Lisette M. Reid said to Nathan Siegel, the lawyer representing ABC News. Hours after the hearing, Reid issued an order that Trump sit down for an in-person deposition the week of Dec. 16 and that it be limited to four hours. Further, the judge ordered that Stephanopoulos must also be deposed next week and it must also be restricted to four hours.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court said Friday that it will hear a case related to California's ability to set its own, often strict, vehicle emissions standards that include curbs on greenhouse gases. Due to the size of the California market, the state’s regulations hold considerable sway over vehicle manufacturers. The Obama administration granted California a waiver to regulate greenhouse gas tailpipe emissions but the first Trump administration sought to change course. The most recent EPA waiver, in 2022, prompted 17 Republican states led by Ohio and the business groups to sue. In court papers, Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar pointed out that manufacturers are already meeting the state's standards.

Smith & Wesson voluntarily agreed, among other product safety changes, to make magazine disconnects available as an option on all its pistols. “I can’t really go around talking about how there needs to be more gun safety for 25-year-old men who know better,” she said. But in a second interview months later, Skipper said that after talking with NBC News she had come around to the idea that more guns should have magazine disconnects. And law enforcement agencies that previously required magazine disconnects in standard-issue weapons have largely moved to guns without them. Magazine disconnects are “becoming much less common for sure.”Consumers may have moved on, but the deadly accidents have persisted.

Skepticism over government responseOne New Jersey lawmaker is accusing federal officials of lying about the presence and purpose of the mysterious drones. Connecticut State Police announced Friday they have deployed a drone detection system to assist in investigative efforts into unauthorized drone sightings reported over Fairfield County. Josh Shapiro said his administration is “aware of” the reported drone sightings and is taking them seriously. Residents in New York’s Rockland County reported drone sightings starting as early as November. A total of 791,597 drones are registered with the FAA, split almost evenly between commercial drones and recreational drones.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly pledged to pardon US Capitol rioters on Day One, but one month before Inauguration Day it’s not clear who among the hundreds of convicted rioters, defendants awaiting trial and remaining fugitives would receive clemency. In a Time Magazine interview conducted last month and published Thursday, the president-elect said he would look at rioters’ cases individually. Some judges in Washington, DC, have also been publicly critical of Trump’s attempts to whitewash the riot’s causes and violence. One major question has been where a line might be drawn among the Capitol riot defendants who would be eligible for Trump’s clemency, and what would qualify as violent versus non-violent actions. One judge, Carl Nichols, a Trump appointee, made pointed comments in a hearing for a Capitol riot defendant two weeks after this year’s election.

CNN —A federal appeals court on Friday declined to temporarily block a ban on TikTok, teeing up a showdown at the Supreme Court over whether the law should take effect while the social media platform’s challenge to it plays out. Last week, the DC Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously upheld the law, clearing the way for it to take effect on January 19. Days later, TikTok asked the court to issue a temporary pause on the ban while the company asks the Supreme Court to review its challenge to the law. The appeals court unanimously rejected that bid in a brief, unsigned order that called such a block “unwarranted.”The law requires the platform to be sold to a new, non-Chinese owner or be banned in the United States. The company has indicated in court filings that if the appeals court declined to grant interim relief, it would ask the Supreme Court to step in on an emergency basis to block the law for now.

athletes doing Mr. Trump’s dance moves were a sign, the hosts said, that Mr. Trump had recaptured popular culture from the clutches of Hollywood liberals. Blame for any hiccups in Mr. Trump’s strategy was assigned to Democrats or even Republicans who were not sufficiently obedient. Perhaps the biggest cheerleader for Mr. Trump was Mr. Bongino, the eponymous host of Rumble’s most-watched show, with 3.4 million followers. I don’t remember seeing Mr. Bongino criticize Mr. Trump — not once. When Mr. Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration later that week after significant pushback, Mr. Bongino never faulted Mr. Trump for the whole ordeal.

A UCLA student is suing multiple California health care providers and hospitals for medical negligence, alleging she was wrongly diagnosed with gender dysphoria and then “fast-tracked onto the conveyor belt of irreversibly damaging” puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgery, according to her lawsuit. “There is strong consensus among the most prominent medical organizations worldwide that evidence-based, gender-affirming care for transgender children and adolescents is medically necessary and appropriate. Surgical gender-affirming care is rarely performed on minors, and these procedures are illegal in dozens of states, though California is not among them. Research suggests that regretting treatment for gender dysphoria is “extremely rare,” according to the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, or WPATH. Transition-related care for minors has been a divisive political issue, with Republicans in 26 states passing measures to ban or restrict gender-affirming care for minors in recent years, according to the Movement Advancement Project, an LGBTQ think tank.

The Federal Trade Commission in a new lawsuit accuses the largest U.S. distributor of wine and spirits of illegal price discrimination that gave large chains — among them Costco, Kroger and Total Wine & More — much better prices than those offered to neighborhood grocery stores, convenience shops and independent liquor stores. The distributor, Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits, is the tenth largest privately held company in the United States, generating about $26 billion in revenues from sales to retail customers in 2023, the FTC said Thursday in announcing the suit. The suit alleges the distributor violated the Robinson-Patman Act by providing “steep discounts” without any market justification to a certain set of retailers. “When local businesses get squeezed because of unfair pricing practices that favor large chains, Americans see fewer choices and pay higher prices — and communities suffer,” said FTC Chair Lina Khan in a statement. “The law says that businesses of all sizes should be able to compete on a level playing field,” Khan said.

WASHINGTON — The FBI failed to take the "basic step" of canvassing its field offices for intelligence ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to a long-awaited Justice Department's inspector general report released Thursday. FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate told investigators that the lack of a canvas was a "basic step that was missed" and that he would have expected it to have occurred, the inspector general's office said. The inspector general did find that the FBI "recognized the potential for violence" and took "significant and appropriate steps" even though the FBI played "only a supporting role in preparing for and responding to" the events of Jan. 6. A total of 13 confidential human sources entered the restricted area around the Capitol, the IG report said, while the remaining 9 never entered the Capitol or restricted area. Smith is still expected to issue a written report on his investigation.

The Montana Supreme Court on Wednesday affirmed a lower court ruling that temporarily blocked a state law prohibiting transition-related health care for minors. “Fortunately, the Montana Supreme Court understands the danger of the state interfering with critical healthcare,” Kell Olson, an attorney for Lambda Legal, said in a statement. The law also prohibits Medicaid from covering such treatments for trans minors. In upholding the injunction, Montana Supreme Court Justice Beth Baker wrote in the majority opinion that the Legislature “did not make gender-affirming care unlawful,” nor “did it make the treatments unlawful for all minors,” as minors can still receive the treatments for other reasons. The U.S. Supreme Court took up such restrictions for the first time last week, when it heard arguments over a similar law in Tennessee.

Russia-UkraineWhile Trump didn't take war with Iran off the table, he made clear that he wants the wars between Russia and Ukraine and Israel and Hamas to end. He told Time that the situation in the Middle East is "an easier problem to handle than what’s happening with Russia and Ukraine." “We’re just escalating this war and making it worse.”According to Time, Trump said he would use U.S. support for Ukraine as leverage against Russia in trying to negotiate an end to the war. “I don’t believe we’ll have to, because we will send the whole family back,” Trump said.
