LONDON — Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the spiritual leader of the global Anglican church, resigned Tuesday after an investigation found that he failed to promptly report serial physical and sexual abuse by a volunteer at Christian summer camps. Welby said in a statement that he was stepping down "in sorrow" and "having sought the gracious permission of His Majesty The King." In his resignation letter, Welby acknowledged “personal and institutional responsibility” for “wrongly” believing that there wasn’t a need to make a formal report to police on the case in 2013. The church should have “properly and effectively” reported Smyth to the relevant authorities, the report found. A petition calling for Welby's resignation, created by members of the national assembly of the Church of England, the General Synod, had reached over 13,000 signatures at the time of his announcement on Tuesday.

Anthropic has been gaining on arch rival OpenAI in recent months, according to data from a popular developer tool offered by startup Vercel. In the week of August 18, the OpenAI code library was downloaded almost 229,000 times by developers. Data from Vercel's AI SDK toolkit VercelA top executive at Vercel attributed the recent adoption trends partly to a new AI model that Anthropic released in the summer. That's because many AI model providers have adopted OpenAI's API specification as a de facto standard. Voters in Arizona and Missouri approved ballot initiatives that will effectively protect abortion rights until fetal viability and undo existing abortion laws on the books. But voters in Florida, Nebraska and South Dakota rejected proposed amendments that would have done the same — becoming the first pro-abortion-rights ballot measures to fail since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022. The other amendment, that would have enshrined abortion rights until fetal viability in the conservative state’s constitution, was rejected. The defeats of the amendments in Florida, Nebraska and South Dakota ended what had been an unbroken winning streak for ballot measures backing abortion rights in the 2½ years since the fall of Roe.
