A bankruptcy judge on Tuesday rejected a bid by The Onion’s parent company to buy Alex Jones’ far-right media empire, including the website Infowars, ruling that the auction process was unfair. A rival bidder associated with Jones, First United American Cos., offered $3.5 million in cash, or twice as much cash as The Onion’s parent company. In testimony before the bankruptcy court in Houston, Murray defended the auction process he used. He said his only goal was to maximize the payout going to the unsecured creditors of Jones’ company. Jason Goldstein, a lawyer for The Onion’s parent company, said in court that the delay after the conclusion of the auction had been costly.

New York CNN —A former Florida-based TD Bank employee was arrested for his alleged role in a massive money-laundering scheme by drug cartels for which the US government previously fined the bank $3 billion. The arrest follows the record fine TD Bank faced in October, after the US Department of Justice said it had “long-term, pervasive, and systemic deficiencies” in its procedures for monitoring transactions. More than 90% of transactions went unmonitored between January 2018 to April 2024, which “enabled three money laundering networks to collectively transfer more than $670 million through TD Bank accounts,” according to a previous legal filing. It’s rare for the government to go after an individual bank employee in this kind of case. In October, TD Bank CEO Bharat Masrani said in a statement: “This is a difficult chapter in our bank’s history.

The Canadian dollar and Australian dollar were in focus on Monday ahead of their central bank meetings this week, while the euro and other major currencies held steady as traders reviewed the U.S. dollar's prospects. On the former, a quarter point cut by the ECB is baked in. The Canadian dollar is trading near a 4-1/2-year low as markets anticipate another outsized interest rate cut. Markets give a higher probability for a larger 50 basis point cut, and are even priming for negative interest rates by next year. While the case for the rate cut seems sealed, investors have one eye on U.S. consumer price inflation (CPI) data due this week.
