We're raising our eyebrows at Ford 's (F) new price cuts on its popular electric pick-up truck. Jim Cramer called Ford's price cuts "counterintuitive" given the robust demand the F-150 Lightning has been seeing so far this year. In February, the company had to pause production and shipments on its electric pickup truck due to a potential battery issue. Meanwhile, prices for new electric vehicles were down 20% for the month driven by Tesla's EV price cuts earlier this year. Ford CEO Jim Farley poses for a photo at the launch of the all-new electric Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck at the Ford Rouge Electric Vehicle Center on April 26, 2022 in Dearborn, Michigan.

Now, more and more automakers are switching to Tesla's charging tech. But there are a few things non-Tesla drivers need to know about charging at a Tesla station. More car companies are shifting to Tesla's charging tech in the hopes of boosting their customers' confidence in going electric. Here's what it boils down to:If you currently drive a Tesla, you can keep charging at Tesla charging locations, which use the company's North American Charging Standard (NACS), which has long served it well. Starting next year, if you drive a non-Tesla EV (from the automakers that have announced they'll make the switch), you'll be able to charge at all Supercharger locations with an adapter.

Polestar owners in North America will have access to Tesla's charging network starting next year. New Polestar vehicles sold in North America will come standard with the Tesla-designed North American Charging Standard, or NACS, plug starting in 2025. Most non-Tesla EVs and charging stations in North America use a plug design called CCS, which stands for Combined Charging System. Tesla EVs can use CCS chargers with an adapter, but currently only Tesla EVs can use Tesla chargers. Tesla's plug design was proprietary until November, when the company published the technical details of its system and made it available to other automakers and makers of EV chargers.

Volvo will add the locations of Tesla charging stations to its proprietary app at the same time. Most non-Tesla EVs and charging stations in the U.S. use a rival plug design, the public-domain Combined Charging System standard. Tesla's NACS charging plug design was proprietary until late last year, when Tesla published the technical details of its system and said anyone could adopt the standard. Several studies have found that CCS charging networks have much lower reliability than Tesla's network. In addition, the CCS fast-charging plug is larger and heavier than Tesla's NACS plug, making it cumbersome for older or disabled drivers to use.

The Tesla Supercharger network could remove the last barrier to EV ownership. Long-standing barriers to EV ownership like battery range and price are finally being addressed, leaving one last obstacle for many would-be EV-owners: access to public fast-charging stations. Tesla has the largest fast-charging network in North America, with about 20,000 Superchargers that previously only connected to Tesla vehicles. A recent study of EV infrastructure done by iSeeCars found that of the 150,000 EV chargers in the US, only about 30,000 are fast chargers (including the Tesla Supercharger network). Only about 11,000 of those fast chargers are non-Tesla chargers so opening up the Supercharger network does make a difference – but doesn't solve the problem.

Most other EVs and charging stations in the U.S. use the public domain Combined Charging System (CCS) plug standard. Currently, Tesla EVs can use CCS chargers with an adapter, but only Teslas can use NACS chargers. An August 2022 study by JD Power found similar results for CCS chargers in other parts of the country. Notably, it also found Tesla's charging network to be much more reliable. Potential buyers of a Ford or GM EV might like what they experience on a test drive, but without a reliable charging network, both have been at a disadvantage to Tesla.

Why Tesla cars get totaled so easily
  + stars: | 2023-06-05 | by ( Graham Rapier | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +3 min
Tesla's cars are tremendously complex, with a multitude of sensors and custom body parts. Insurers are increasingly declaring Tesla cars totaled in an accident instead of paying for a fix. To make matters even more complicated, Tesla's new "structural" battery packs — those that are integrated with the car's body — have "zero repairability," according to manufacturing expert Sandy Munro. Tesla is acutely aware of the high insurance costs of its vehicles, with CEO Elon Musk in January saying they were "unreasonably high." Tesla has also been working to offer its own insurance products in some states, including California, with premium prices based on driving data from cars' onboard sensors.

New York CNN —After a series of price cuts throughout most of this year, Tesla is raising the prices of its two upper-end models: the Model S and the Model X. Tesla’s Model S sedan now is priced at between $87,500 and $107,500, before options, while the Model X SUV costs between $97,500 and $107,500. Those prices are about $2,200 more for the base models and about $2,700 more for the upper end “Plaid” models, according to Reuters. Some analysts see Tesla’s price cuts as a way of taking aim at rivals who are struggling to make money on their EV offerings as they ramp up production. The Model S and Model X only made up 5% of Tesla’s global sales last year, and only half that share of its first quarter sales.

The new chargers appear to solve a common Supercharger complaint for non-Tesla EV owners: cable length. The electric-car maker said it plans to open the V4 Supercharger station to non-Tesla's "soon." On Wednesday, the electric-car maker announced it had opened its V4 Superchargers in Harderwijk in the Netherlands. Though, Bink told Insider he wasn't able to experience a faster charge rate because he had a 2018 model. Bink was one of several Tesla owners to take to social media to post pictures and videos of the new charging site.

Morgan Stanley's Adam Jonas remains bullish on Tesla even as shares drop following the electric vehicle maker's latest investor day. Tesla shares dropped more than 5% in Thursday premarket trading after the electric car maker's investor day, which was long on vision but short on specifics on any new Tesla products. Regardless, Jonas reiterated an overweight rating on Tesla, saying the Elon Musk-led company will fend off competitors as a pricing war heats up in the electric vehicle sector. He said the vertical integration in Tesla's Austin facility allows Tesla to "iterate far faster and with less waste" than its peers. Tesla shares surged 64% in 2023, after falling 65% last year.
