CNN —The union representing Canadian autoworkers at Ford has reached a tentative deal with the US automaker, keeping more than 5,000 union members on the job and providing some good news for an industry dealing with unprecedented labor disruptions. Details of the deal between Ford and Unifor, the Canadian union, were not immediately available. “We leveraged our union’s most powerful weapon: the right to strike,” Unifor said in its statement Tuesday evening. The issues in the Canadian labor negotiations greatly mirrored the issues behind the UAW strike against those three automakers. The companies, which are reporting record or near-record profits, all say they have offered the UAW members raises totaling about 20% during the life of the contracts, including immediate 10% raises.

3M posted $7.99 billion in revenue, beating analysts' estimates of $7.87 billion, according to Refinitiv. The FedEx pilots who belong to the Air Line Pilots Association voted 57% against the proposed contract, which was reached in May and endorsed by union leadership. But even with the “no” vote, the 5,200 FedEx pilots won’t be able to go on strike any time soon. FedEx pilots are covered by the Railway Labor Act, which despite the name, covers both rail workers and airline employees. The FedEx pilots, who unlike most FedEx employees count as airline employees when it comes to which labor law they work under, have not cleared any of those hurdles so far. Rob Ashton, president of the ILWU Canada, said in a statement that it did not believe the recommendations had the ability to protect union jobs. His group estimated that the first strike would cause an average 6-8 weeks of supply chain disruption before conditions would return to normal. The National Association of Chemical Distributors told CNBC some chemical companies are expected supply chain congestion until October as a result of the strike. ☆ The three-day LA school strike is over. But get used to short, disruptive strikes like it

But technically, this was a strike to protest the school district’s labor practices, not over the state of the contract negotiations. Most of those short strikes started with both strikers and management knowing the length of the strike at the start. Los Angeles school workers and supporters rally in Los Angeles State Historic Park on the last day of a three-day strike this past week. Sometimes the union waging the strike doesn’t have the option, at least not at that time, to have an open-ended strike. Workers on strike sometimes receive strike benefits but they’re not eligible for unemployment benefits from their state.

About 75% of the full-time hourly workers covered under the deal currently get about $15 an hour, according to the unions. But the unions were able to get a much more front-loaded pay package in this tentative deal. About 96% of membership who voted on that previous offer rejected it, following the recommendation of their union leadership. “I can’t help but believe the overwhelming result of the previous vote played a role in reaching this agreement. In fact, Disney has been struggling to fill some of the job openings it has at Disney World.

New York CNN —The 7,000 nurses who went on strike in New York Monday say the 19% pay hike that hospital management offered them was never the main issue. And so thousands of nurses went on strike with no end in sight. The overall effect on the New York hospital system appear to be minor so far, according to a city official. While the union and Montefiore are due back at the bargaining table Monday afternoon, no new talks are scheduled as of midday for Mount Sinai. The union says Mount Sinai and Montefiore have severe staffing problems and need to do more than the others to improve patient care and work conditions.
