"It's a time of meaningful evolution," said The Vitamin Shoppe CEO Lee Wright in the company's annual report. The weight loss boom is pushing consumers to spend more on protein supplement products. The Vitamin Shoppe reported a 10% sales bump in ready-to-drink protein beverages in 2023 versus the prior year. Wright expects the customer base for weight loss products to triple as more Americans try to lose weight. The Vitamin Shoppe also launched its own telehealth service in early May, "Whole Health Rx," which includes access to branded and compounded GLP-1 weight loss drugs.

Telehealth company Ro on Wednesday launched a new tracker to help patients find a popular class of weight loss and diabetes drugs called GLP-1s amid shortages of those treatments in the U.S. The supply tracker could be a valuable tool for many Americans scrambling to get their hands on GLP-1s, such as Novo Nordisk 's weight loss injection Wegovy and diabetes drug Ozempic. The tracker aims to make GLP-1 supply information more transparent and accessible for everyone, regardless of whether they are enrolled in any of Ro's programs. The tracker is an interactive tool that gives people real-time supply information by drug, dose size and pharmacy location. He added that opening up the tracker to everyone also makes it more likely for both Ro patients and people not enrolled in the company's programs to access GLP-1s.

In addition to Wegovy and Ozempic, the GLP-1 class includes Eli Lilly's highly popular weight loss drug Zepbound and diabetes treatment Mounjaro. VanGilder signed up nearly four years ago and started taking the weekly diabetes injection Ozempic specifically for weight loss. The big difference between Calibrate and prior weight loss efforts, VanGilder said, is that she doesn't feel like she's dieting. Calibrate is one of the only companies to regularly release reports detailing the results of its weight loss program. The federal Medicare program by law can't cover weight loss drugs unless the prescription is for another approved health benefit, such as diabetes or cardiovascular health.

A doctor said healthy food plans can help address high healthcare costs and chronic illness rates. Providing personalized recommendations for healthy food — along with information on how to prepare it and the resources to afford it — is fast becoming a trend in preventive healthcare. Healthy food can be hard to access and may not always fit the culinary traditions and eating habits people grew up with. "People think that a healthy diet has to cost more, a lot of the staples of a healthy diet are very inexpensive," he said. Cruciferous veggies are some of the most nutritious foods because they're high in antioxidants, which may help protect against cancer.

Within weeks, the two-year-old US Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is set to run out of funds, and Congress appears unlikely to authorize more. Even as many older and rural Americans may be thrust into financial hardship due to the ACP’s collapse, indigenous communities could fare even worse. Because tribal members can now work remotely, they are no longer forced to move away from their communities to seek opportunity, they told CNN. For example, Mitchell said, after decades of decline in Mohawk fluency, a growing number of tribal members are now involved in online language immersion. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig) Seth Wenig/AP/FileInstead, some say, the collapse of the ACP will become another stain on the US government’s centuries-long track record of breaking promises to tribal communities.

Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, said Tuesday that it was shutting down its health care centers, a network that only last year it said it planned to expand. The retailer said in a blog post that its 51 health centers would close. The plans won’t affect the more than 4,600 pharmacies and more than 3,000 vision centers within Walmart stores. Walmart started the health-care clinic initiative in 2019 in Dallas, Ga., with centers providing primary care, labs, X-rays and electrocardiograms, counseling, and dental, optical and hearing services. In 2021, Walmart started offering a virtual option when it acquired MeMD, a telehealth provider.

Walmart opened its first Walmart Health clinic in Georgia in 2019, and then gradually opened more clinics next door to its big-box stores. Walmart struggled with high executive turnover and cycled through numerous leaders of Walmart Health. Going forward, Walmart will return to the health services it offered before the Walmart Health push: It will continue to operate its thousands of pharmacies and vision centers. Walmart Health marks the latest failed push into health care by a high-profile company, following the disbandment of a joint venture between JPMorgan Chase , Berkshire Hathaway and Amazon in 2021. Meanwhile, Amazon 's health clinic operator One Medical now has more than 125 locations nationwide.
