New York CNN —Soccer superstar Leo Messi’s arrival in America has sparked a surge in ticket prices, apparel and now, streaming subscriptions. MLS Season Pass, which is Apple’s streaming package that broadcasts the soccer matches, experienced 1,690% growth in sign-ups the day Messi first played for his new team Inter Miami, according to analytics firm Antenna. Newly released data shows that the streaming package had about 6,000 subscription sign-ups the day before, but that soared to 110,000 sign-ups on his July 21 debut in the Leagues Cup. But nearly half of MLS Season Pass sign-ups to date happened in July after Messi joined the league, showing the surge in interest that Messi brought to Major League Soccer. That isn’t a surprise since his deal with Inter Miami includes a cut of the revenue from new subscribers of MLS Season Pass, according to multiple reports.

But streaming TV is still a good deal. I wrote in May about why a wave of price hikes for ad-free streaming services was on the horizon. AdvertisementAdvertisementWhat's really coming to an end right now is not the end of cheap streaming but the end of cheap ad-free streaming. That's why cable TV mostly has ads (with some add-on exceptions like HBO and other premium cable channels). "Streamflation" is a drag, but I'm not pining for the cable bundle — and I doubt other cord-cutters are either.

In addition to co-starring as fan-favorite character Roy, Goldstein was a co-writer and co-producer on the show, taking home two Emmy statuettes of his own.

To pack three seasons’ worth of English soccer stadiums with exasperated or exhilarated crowds, the Apple TV+ comedy “Ted Lasso” turned to dozens of background actors and powerful visual effects technology. The show’s makers also used crowd sprites, in which actors were filmed individually on green screens and then arranged to appear as part of the crowd. There were even digital doubles: three-dimensional models whose movements were informed by a motion actor. Innovations in digital technology and artificial intelligence have transformed the increasingly sophisticated world of visual effects, which can ever more convincingly draw from, replicate and morph flesh-and-blood performers into virtual avatars. Those advancements have thrust the issue toward the top of the grievances cited in the weekslong strike by the actors’ union.

“Pee-wee’s Playhouse” premiered on CBS in 1986, the year I graduated from high school, which means I was probably too old for it. Or maybe too young. (Among them was a young Laurence Fishburne as Cowboy Curtis, wielding an animated lasso.) The overstuffed set, with its midcentury candy palette and zigzag angles, looked like a B-52s album you could live inside. Pee-wee the character was a parody — a high-on-Pixy-Stix exaggeration of the clean-cut kids’ hosts of the 1950s, a Howdy Doody who brought himself to life.

Hollywood writers and actors have been on strike for over a week. Economists are warning that the shutdown could cost the US billions of dollars. The previous writers' strike in 2007 wiped $2 billion off Los Angeles' economy alone. Major films alone contribute around $250,000 to the US economy each day of production, according to data from the Motion Picture Association. New seasons of "The Last of Us", "Euphoria", and "The White Lotus" have already been delayed as a result of the strikes.

Every now and then, a fictional character can have a profound real-world impact. In 2023, a very different character is revealing different truths, and the effect is, if anything, even richer and more meaningful. The character is Richie Jerimovich, brilliantly portrayed by Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and the show in which he appears is FX’s “The Bear,” the second season of which was released last month. Episode by episode, Richie opens a window into the souls of so very many of our friends and neighbors. He forces us to answer an uncomfortable question: How do we respond to people in pain?

CNN —Oscar winner George Clooney has joined the chorus of artists calling for change as actors hit the picket lines in their first strike against film and television studios since 1980. “This is an inflection point in our industry,” Clooney told CNN in a statement on Friday. The SAG-AFTRA strike was officially announced on Thursday. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, chief negotiator for SAG-AFTRA, stressed to reporters on Friday that the actors’ strike is not a ploy for big name stars to make more money. The writers’ strike had already halted production on most films and television shows.

The moment of triumph for HBO is coming at a time of transition for the network, which since last year has been run by a debt-ridden parent company, Warner Bros. The network is now part of a streaming service that removed its call letters (bye HBO Max, hello Max). HBO had the three most nominated shows: “Succession” (27), “The Last of Us” (24) and “The White Lotus” (23). It was in 1992, when NBC landed nominations for “I’ll Fly Away,” “L.A. Law,” “Law & Order” and “Quantum Leap.” All four series lost to that year’s winner, “Northern Exposure,” from CBS.

With minor exceptions, the major categories were filled in the expected ways when the 2023 Primetime Emmys nominations were announced on Wednesday. Some surprises cropped up further down the page, where the members of the Television Academy apparently started checking off every name they saw from favored shows like “Ted Lasso” and “The White Lotus.”Snub: Taylor SheridanHe may be the most successful maker of television currently working, but Sheridan gets no respect at the Emmys. But it was a mild shock to see a second Disney+ “Star Wars” show (along with “Andor”) break through in the limited-series category. Ewan McGregor, who reprised his Obi-Wan role from the prequel films, apparently draws a lot of good will. The merger of TV comedy into satirical drama is just about complete.

CNN —Dragons and zombies and Jedi, oh my. HBO’s gaudy show of force – with half the best-drama nominees and 127 bids overall, the highest total of any individual network or service – featured a combination of both. "Obi-Wan Kenobi," starring Ewan McGregor, was one of three "Star Wars" series to receive multiple Emmy nominations. Fabio Lovino/HBOWhen those nominees need to begin rehearsing their acceptance speeches is itself a source of mystery as of now. It suggests that there’s a better way of playing this game. “The Bear” has no illusions about that, but it is also unashamed to see a value in it. But there’s also taking care, learning discipline, doing things the hard way because it’s the right way. Try again, try again. It’s unsparing, but it comes with the belief that you can do better because you are better.

The pilot episode of “The Bear,” FX’s frenetic series about a high-end chef who takes over his family’s blue-collar sandwich shop, opens with an unsettling image. The man swings the door open wide and confronts a great, angry bear. At first, he tries to soothe the beast, whispering, “I know.” But the bear lunges at him. The bear is grief. The kind of trauma that grief imposes has become a popular subject on buzzy TV shows.

Opinion America Is Waking Up From a DreamWhen “Ted Lasso” premiered in 2020, it was supposed to rehab masculinity’s brand. “Ted Lasso” asked us to believe that we could rehabilitate American masculinity without rehabilitating the strictures of gender. “Ted Lasso” premiered near the aftermath of Trump’s presidency, with Covid still roaring. Ted asked Rebecca to hire a private detective to spy on his estranged wife and her new boyfriend. The “Ted Lasso” finale is satisfying fan service about the power of friendship, but altogether the uneven third season teaches us a more important lesson.

“Is love a tender thing?” Romeo asks early in the Shakespeare tragedy to which he and Juliet give their names. Not so much, according to the raw and riveting new production of “Romeo and Juliet” that opened Wednesday at the Almeida Theater here. It’s no surprise that the courtship between the noble Romeo — here played by the sweet-faced Toheeb Jimoh, from TV’s “Ted Lasso” — and the teenage Juliet will end in calamity. Her “Romeo and Juliet,” performed without an intermission, begins with the cast clawing feverishly at a stage wall, onto which are projected crucial lines from the prologue. But as if in haste to get straight to the meat of the play, the wall soon collapses to reveal the citizenry of Verona mid-combat.

Manchester City Bends the Story to Its Will
  + stars: | 2023-06-09 | by ( Rory Smith | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The writers of “Ted Lasso,” the acclaimed, sugar-sweet Apple TV comedy, never particularly worried about being hidebound by reality. At the end of “Ted Lasso” — in all other aspects a determinedly romantic and uplifting show, an unabashed underdog story of empowerment and personal growth and the overwhelming power of nice — Manchester City still wins the Premier League. Even in fiction, City cannot be dislodged. City is not the villain, not really, in the Lasso Cinematic Universe. That role goes, instead, to a combination of conventional thinking and West Ham.
