Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce began appearing in DirecTV’s ad campaign before his apparent romance with Taylor Swift caught the attention of the media. Photo: DirecTVDirecTV will modify some of its football-season ads following a complaint from the National Football League and an unfavorable ruling from an ad-industry self-regulatory group. The ads cast Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce as the brand’s “Overly Direct Sportsperson,” portraying rival TV providers’ NFL coverage as unreliable or confusing to navigate in contrast.

TV flags are flying at half-staff today, with the news that Matthew Perry died on Saturday. The show’s continuing ubiquity makes Perry’s death more galling somehow — don’t certain stars achieve immortality through streaming and syndication? Perry was not the kind of actor who disappeared into a role but rather where the role disappeared into him. This is never more clear than in “The West Wing,” where Perry appears in three episodes as Joe Quincy, a clever lawyer. His arc on “West Wing” aired right around the same time as the final few episodes of “Friends,” and it modeled the kind of role we’d frequently see him in after Chandler: a fascinating, intelligent, perhaps lovable adversary.

The show looms so large and Perry’s performance as Chandler Bing was so indelible that it can be difficult to think of him in any other context. But Perry had a long and varied career that included films, many other series and the occasional play. Here are some of his most memorable performances and how to watch them. As Chandler, Perry was the sharpest, funniest Friend. Perry’s well-known struggles with addiction are unavoidably linked to his time on the show — for instance, he said he went to rehab right after filming Monica and Chandler’s wedding.

Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers about the series finale of “Billions,” titled “Admirals Fund.”After seven twisty seasons, with more double and triple crosses than you can shake a stock certificate at, “Billions” successfully landed the plane (OK, private jet) with its series finale, in a satisfying finish that reassembled the key players and even gave them time to take individual bows. For a show with so much bite and venom, it was oddly sentimental in generally the best of ways. The final season found a way to raise the stakes above high finance, with billionaire Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) running for president, exhibiting enough problematic qualities and questionable beliefs to inspire those within in his inner circle to turn against him and try to thwart his bid. If it wasn’t quite the game of catch scene from “Field of Dreams,” for these purposes the point was much the same. The “Billions” finale is playing on Paramount+ and will premiere October 29 on Showtime.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An Iranian teenage girl injured weeks ago in a mysterious incident on Tehran's Metro while not wearing a headscarf has died, state media reported Saturday. While a friend told Iranian state television that she hit her head on the station’s platform, the soundless footage aired by the broadcaster from outside of the car is blocked by a bystander. Internationally, Geravand’s injury sparked renewed criticism of Iran's treatment of women and of the mandatory hijab law. Amini died in a hospital on Sept. 16, 2022, after she was detained by Iranian morality police on allegations of improperly wearing the hijab. Since those large-scale protests subsided, many women in Tehran could be seen without the hijab in defiance of the law.

Experts say this initial response may expose Beijing’s limited influence in the region, despite official propaganda talking up China as the world’s new peacemaker. Yuval Waks, a senior official at the Israeli Embassy in Beijing, said his country expected a “stronger condemnation” of Hamas from China. State media coverageDespite its claims of neutrality, coverage of the conflict on China’s state-run television appears more slanted. CNN —Intelligence gained by the “Five Eyes” network led to Canada’s public accusation that the Indian government may have played a role in the assassination of a Sikh separatist activist on Canadian soil, the US Ambassador to Canada said Sunday. Five Eyes is an intelligence sharing pact between the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, though the ambassador would not confirm if that shared intelligence came from the US. The spat then escalated further last week when India suspended visa services for Canadian citizens over what it said were “security threats” against diplomats in Canada. On Sunday, Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair sought to shift the focus from questions over its intelligence to the criminal investigation of Nijjar’s killing. His death both shocked and outraged the Sikh community in Canada, one of the largest outside India and home to more than 770,000 members of the religious minority.

I left Amazon Studios in 2017 (after accusations I dispute), and five years later, the larger industry picture looks exceedingly bleak. In the last year nearly every major studio, from Warner Bros. to Paramount, has announced layoffs and write-offs. CNN —DirecTV and Nexstar announced Monday that they had largely resolved a bitter carriage dispute that had left millions of the satellite carrier’s subscribers unable to access local television giant Nexstar’s large array of channels. The deal to end the blackout, which began in July and stretched for more than 75 days, comes one week after Disney and Charter also agreed to resolve a dispute that resulted in ABC-owned stations and ESPN being yanked from the cable provider’s lineup. While most of Nexstar’s stations will be covered under the new multi-year agreement, DirecTV said 27 stations controlled by Nexstar, but owned by another company, will not fall under the umbrella. DirecTV chief executive Bill Morrow alluded to the trend in a note to customers on Monday. “Unfortunately, over the past decade-plus access to your programming has become a battleground for networks and stations to try to drive up higher rates,” Morrow said.

Elsewhere there are delayed premieres and other adjustments but don’t worry, there will still be plenty of TV to watch. So what can you expect to see in prime time this fall? Even if you’ve never read a Hollywood trade publication, a little familiarity with TV’s recent past will serve you well. Disney starts drafting broadcast TV’s grand finale

It was pretty much the only way to watch “Gunsmoke” or “Howdy Doody” until cable networks arrived in force in the 1980s, bundled together for a monthly subscription fee. For Disney, ABC represented a watershed moment. Look deeper and the big broadcasters attracted only one in five viewers, while one in three watched cable networks. The TV group, excluding cable networks such as Fox News, generated an EBITDA margin of nearly 12% for the year ending June 30. Assume any deal includes cable networks such as Disney Channel and National Geographic.

The Grammys went big with a tribute to 50 years of hip-hop earlier this year, but MTV’s celebration of rap’s anniversary had some highlights, too: After Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh gave the crowd a lesson on the genre’s beginnings, Minaj emerged with “Itty Bitty Piggy,” one of her beloved early mixtape tracks, then reunited with her mentor Lil Wayne for “A Milli.” LL Cool J commanded the stage for two of his own songs, then went (shell) toe to toe with Run-DMC’s Darryl McDaniels on “Walk This Way.” (The performance mostly elided the 1990s, but Diddy’s eight-minute performance earlier in the night covered that era.) It was a reminder that MTV was once the home of “Yo! MTV Raps,” and used to spend a lot more time on music.
