The Olympics Have Arrived
  + stars: | 2024-07-27 | by ( Melissa Kirsch | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
It has been only three years since the last summer Olympics: the 2020 Tokyo Games, you’ll recall, were held in the summer of 2021. Now the Olympics return with untold opportunities to geek out on sports you haven’t thought about for several years, or ever. Broadcast coverage of the Olympics makes this transformation easy. I’m a total sucker for a hyperemotional documentary featurette on that gymnast whose family sacrificed everything for her Olympic dreams. “One of the strangest things I’ve ever seen an animal do,” Alex had told me, and I concurred.

But as a refugee, he couldn’t represent Palestine or Syria. Ismail, the team’s best hope to become the first Palestinian to win an Olympic medal, told CNN he feels similarly. This year, there will be eight – the most in history, according to the Palestine Olympic Committee.

Being a veteran world-class swimmer — and cyclist, and runner — Taylor Spivey has dealt with worse than Paris’ River Seine. (Bertrand Guay / AFP via Getty Images)Standards for water quality differ in Europe than in the United States. “And that can be associated, on one hand, with the clement weather, dry weather. The days before the Olympic swimming competition are often a chance for the world’s best swimmers to share their hopes and expectations. This year, it was the latest chance to air their grievances. There was talk of Chinese doping, demands for transparency and simmering anger. Much of the latter was focused on disappointment and disillusionment with the global antidoping system, and the irritation was international. Chinese journalists complained of unfair scrutiny.

In the 1960s, many public pools were filled with concrete or destroyed to avoid allowing Black Americans to swim in them. In fact, park managers opted to shut down the Historic Audubon Park Natatorium in New Orleans, the largest public pool in the South, rather than see it integrated. Black children ages 10-14 years drown in swimming pools at a rate that is almost 8 times higher than White children. Third places are incredibly important for public health and wellbeing however because they give people a place to socialize and build community. We also need better national data about our public pool system that goes beyond project- or funding-specific tracking.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach with Salt Lake City Utah delegation members after it was announced that Salt Lake City Utah will be the location for the 2034 Winter Olympics. PARIS — The Winter Games will make a return visit to Salt Lake City in 2034 while the 2030 Olympics were tentatively set for the French Alps, officials said Wednesday. "The last 10 days of my life were totally unexpected," Fraser Bullock, head of the Salt Lake City bid, told NBC affiliate KSL minutes after the vote for Salt Lake City. But with an 83-6 vote for Salt Lake City to host, Bullock said he believes the IOC has total confidence in 2034 organizers. The naming of Salt Lake City and French Alps as the next two winter sites had been in the works for months, with only moderate concerns rooted in France's snap elections.

If featuring in Instagram posts was an Olympic sport, Hanson’s hunk would win gold. International Olympic CommitteeArtistic and Olympic feats have been bound together since the dawn of the modern games in the late 19th century. Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the International Olympic Committee, was influenced by the culture of ancient Greece, in which sport was an art. Eleven of those Chinese swimmers are due to compete again in Paris, and many of their rivals are preparing to go against them with a sense of bitter resignation. Rob Koehler, director of international sports advocacy group Global Athlete, told CNN that they are already anticipating the worst. In a statement, WADA stood by its previous decision-making and said an independent prosecutor had confirmed that its conclusions were reasonable. He said athletes feel as though World Aquatics and the World Anti-Doping Agency have failed them and that nobody outside of the sport is paying attention. While none of those swimmers want to publicly comment on the situation ahead of the Games, Koehler believes that they will publicly protest if any one of the 11 Chinese athletes win a medal.

It's entirely possible that there are Greenland sharks still living today that were swimming in the North Atlantic Ocean at the time. Some theories include the shark's slow growth rate and low metabolic rate, but research is ongoing. Scientists hope that unlocking the secrets of how these fish age could help humans live longer, healthier lives. "We want to look closely at some of these hallmarks to determine if the Greenland shark shows any signs of traditional aging," he said. While Greenland sharks' remarkable aging process has allowed them to survive centuries, it could also be a double-edged sword as their environment rapidly changes.

Angry Birds Take on Drones at New York City Beach
  + stars: | 2024-07-13 | by ( Michael Levenson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
One is a distinctive shorebird, slightly smaller than an average sea gull, with a bright orange bill that pries open clams, oysters and other shellfish. The other is a remote-controlled gadget with rotating blades. In the skies above Rockaway Beach in Queens, bird and drone are not, it seems, coexisting in harmony. Just as New Yorkers flock to the beach to escape the sweltering summer heat, American Oystercatchers have taken to attacking a fleet of drones deployed by city officials to scan for sharks and swimmers in distress. The aerial conflict between animal and machine is raising concerns about the safety of the shorebirds, as they aggressively pursue the buzzing drones in defense of their nests, city officials and bird experts said.

The scene at Coney Island on Saturday was typical for a humid and hot weekend in July: colorful towels, tents and umbrellas packed into the strip of sand. Along the famed boardwalk in Brooklyn, signs warned visitors of the potential dangers posed by lightning or strong currents, and delineated where and when it was safe to swim. Yet in one area, closed off by small red flags staked into the sand, a handful of people ventured into the water with no lifeguards present. To the east, where two teenage sisters drowned in the water the night before, swimmers splashed around, unaware or undeterred, enjoying an escape from the city’s heat as temperatures peaked just below 90 degrees.

New York CNN —Your kid’s summer camp is likely fully staffed. The shift is a refreshing change after the pandemic drove many teens away from working during their summer breaks. “Now I’m seeing parents pushing their kids to work again,” said Pritikin, who employs around 350 staff members each summer. Beryl will likely create dangerous rip currents along much of the US Gulf Coast for the holiday weekend. “Life-threatening beach conditions” will begin Friday afternoon and persist through the weekend for the Gulf Coast, the National Hurricane Center warned Thursday morning. “Beachgoers should be extremely wary of these conditions over the holiday weekend,” the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi urged Thursday. Widespread high temperatures in the 90s for the Gulf Coast this weekend will likely have people seeking out said relief. Rip currents can be spotted from the shore but are tricky to see for anyone already in the water.

The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into how antidoping authorities and sports officials allowed elite Chinese swimmers who had tested positive for a banned substance to escape punishment and win a slew of medals — including three golds — at the last Olympics, according to two people briefed on the matter and swimming’s international governing body. The decision to move forward with a criminal investigation is a dramatic escalation by the United States against the Chinese, world antidoping authorities and the Olympic movement, and will cast a shadow of criminality over the Summer Games, which are scheduled to begin later this month in Paris. Eleven of the swimmers who tested positive — and who have never been suspended for doping — are again members of the Chinese Olympic team. Several are favorites to again win medals.

China’s anti-doping agency has said the 23 athletes tested positive for an “extremely low concentration” of trimetazidine at a national swimming competition in 2021. Trimetazidine has the potential to boost endurance and has been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) since 2014. “We can’t comment on the reported federal law enforcement investigation,” Travis Tygart, the CEO of the US Anti-Doping Agency, said in a statement to CNN Thursday. World Aquatics Executive Director Brent Nowicki attends a news conference during the 20th World Aquatics Championships at the Marine Messe in Fukuoka, Japan, on July 13, 2023.
