In September, GOBankingRates ranked the best retirement towns in the U.S. for the middle class in 2024. The following factors were then considered for each city:Total populationPopulation aged 65 and overTotal householdsMedian household incomeNumber of households receiving Social Security benefitsNumber of households receiving retirement incomeAverage Social Security benefits for households receiving themAverage retirement income for households receiving itThe data sources used for the report include the U.S. Census American Community Survey, Zillow's Home Value Index and more. GOBankingRates' study found that middle-class Americans will have the most success retiring in Florida, Ohio, and Arizona. The middle class has always flocked to Florida because of its affordability," Ray Marek, GOBankingRates' media outreach manager, tells CNBC Make It. Marek added that despite the rising cost of living in Florida, the data shows that Florida is still a top destination for middle-class retirees who want to live in a place that offers a balance between affordability and quality of life.

Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida Thursday, leaving less damage than initially feared. Sky-high insurance premiums and extreme weather have already prompted some Floridians to move. Multiple home insurance providers have left the state entirely, and longtime Floridians have started to get priced out of coastal towns. According to an analysis of US Census data by NBC News, around 18% of homeowners in Florida are without home insurance. Sky-high insurance premiums and extreme weather have already prompted some Floridians to move. But the storm calls into focus an already difficult part of living in Florida: home insurance. A hurricane watch and warnings of storm surges up to 15 feet high were issued Tuesday for almost all of Florida's western coastline as a potential tropical storm moves across the Caribbean Sea and towards the Gulf Coast. The hurricane watch extends from Indian Pass in north-west Florida near Panama City, down to Englewood, and includes Tampa Bay. Hurricane and tropical storm watches are now in effect for the entire western coast of the Sunshine State. A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible, and is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated onslaught of tropical-storm-force winds and conditions. Outside of the U.S., a hurricane watch is also in effect for parts of eastern Mexico from Cabo Catoche to Tulum and Pinar del Río in Cuba.

Self-compassionate touch, which can be practiced anywhere, can include stroking the upper arms like a hug. Milko/E+/Getty ImagesThe study showed a single 20-second session of self-compassionate touch significantly reduced stress, increased kindness to the participant and improved mental well-being. However, Hafeez noted that while self-compassionate touch showed similar mental health benefits to long-term therapy, it is not a complete substitute for it — especially among those with diagnosed mental health conditions. Instead, she advised people to think of self-compassionate touch as an added tool for their mental health toolbox. The study results showed the more people make self-compassionate touch a habit, the greater the mental health benefits.

The Nassau County School Board removed 36 books last year after the titles were challenged by Citizens Defending Freedom, a conservative advocacy group. The Nassau County School Board did not immediately return a request for comment. The suit was among several that challenged the removal of books by school districts across Florida under a law signed by Republican Gov. But during a tense scene in the new crime comedy “Bad Monkey,” a Key deer, a member of an endangered species native to the Florida Keys, kept entering the frame. Not a lot of shows shoot in Florida — blame the lack of film infrastructure; blame the absence of tax breaks; blame the deer and the gnats and the 99 percent humidity. Even shows set in the state will typically shoot in North Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana or, as in the case of Lawrence’s Florida-centric comedy “Cougar Town,” Los Angeles.
