During the 1930s, the site was a dive bar and restaurant called Bonnie’s Stonewall Inn, which shuttered in 1954. Three years later, the Genovese crime family reopened the bar, retaining the Stonewall sign and name. Gay bars were mostly mob-run back then because of laws against homosexual behavior in public. No one was talking about landmarking Stonewall then, but the city’s designation of the Village helped forestall various proposals to raze the building. Indigenous researchers are up against a ticking clock: Of the 4,000 Indigenous languages worldwide, one dies every two weeks with its last speaker. He leads First Languages AI Reality, an initiative of the Mila-Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, where researchers are building speech recognition models for over 200 endangered Indigenous languages in North America. However, first, he must overcome a major roadblock: There aren’t enough Indigenous computer scientist graduates — people who know the language and culture — to tackle these language preservation projects. “We only graduate one or two Indigenous Ph.D.s in AI and computer science every year,” he said. Stringer | ReutersBEIJING — China will start limiting exports of critical metal tungsten this weekend, just as alternatives to Chinese suppliers of the metal are reopening. watch nowEcclestone pointed out that tungsten prices have not reacted much to China's announcement. While China restricts tungsten exports, the U.S. increased tariffs on Chinese tungsten by 25% in September. Demand for tungsten in and outside China is expected to rise, keeping tungsten prices elevated in the near term, said Emre Uzun, ferro-alloys and steel analyst at Fastmarkets. But starting late next year, he expects increased non-China supply to help stabilize raw tungsten prices.
