On Monday, Deirdre Findlay started her first day as Sonos' chief commercial officer, a newly-created position that's an amalgam of chief marketer, chief revenue officer, and chief customer officer. As a high-end speaker brand, Sonos has found itself in an enormously competitive category that has been plagued with weakening consumer demand. Next week, Findlay said her team will start digging into what Sonos knows about its customers. Findlay also needs to figure out how to convince new customers to buy Sonos products. Whether or not Sonos continues to target new consumers who want more affordable electronics is something that Findlay is still figuring out.

On Wednesday, organizers of the Dotdash Meredith Union took a step to show they're ready to escalate their efforts. Dotdash Meredith sources requested anonymity to speak freely about the status of negotiations and the union's thinking, citing sensitivity over the ongoing talks. Dotdash Meredith spokespersons did not respond to requests for comment. "We've spoken to management across the table and we've appealed to their common sense," a second union source said, adding, "People should see this as us saying, 'We've tried to bargain. How Hermès Turned a Dog Collar Into a Bag

In 1821, a 20-year-old innkeeper’s son named Thierry Hermès, who grew up in the German textile town of Krefeld, moved to France’s Normandy region and apprenticed as a saddler. Eleven years later, he opened his own workshop in Paris, where he sold harnesses, bridles and saddles crafted with a stitch that can only be done by hand. After the advent of the automobile, Thierry’s grandson Émile-Maurice Hermès expanded the company’s offerings to include driving accessories and luggage trunks, as well as clocks and wristwatches with leather casings and straps. In 1923, the house even introduced a collection of dog collars, which were elaborately decorated with leather studs, metal looped rings and fringed trimmings. They became so popular that women began wearing them as belts; as the story goes, the French couturier Marie Callot Gerber, whose dogs wore the collars, commissioned Hermès to reinterpret them as wrist cuffs.

Club holding Broadcom 's (AVGO) investment prospects look bright – with or without cloud software maker VMWare (VMW) under its corporate roof. For now, though, the companies remain apart after Broadcom's planned $61 billion takeover of VMWare did not close Monday, as previously scheduled. AVGO YTD mountain Broadcom YTD With VMWare, Broadcom would be a company with sales split roughly 50-50 between its traditional semiconductor division — an artificial intelligence beneficiary — and software, which typically is higher-margin revenue. Without VMWare, Broadcom would have freed up its capacity to reward shareholders in a different, but still meaningful, way. Even with the buyback silver lining, our hope is Broadcom completes the VMWare deal because it should boost Broadcom's earnings over time.

Hospitals in the Gaza Strip are nearing collapse under the Israeli blockade that cut power and deliveries of food and other necessities to the territory. Israel's offensive has devastated neighborhoods, shuttered five hospitals, killed thousands and wounded more people than its remaining health facilities can handle. The medical center is still treating hundreds of patients in defiance of an evacuation order the Israeli military gave Friday. A shortage of surgical supplies forced some staff to use sewing needles to stitch wounds, which Abed said can damage tissue. When Israel cut fuel to the territory's sole power plant two weeks ago, Gaza's rumbling generators kicked in to keep life-support equipment running in hospitals.

The pandemic pushed financial giants to embrace a more casual dress code that many other corporations had begun to embrace. Spain's right-wing opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo on Wednesday failed to gain the absolute majority of parliamentary votes needed to become prime minister. Feijóo received 172 votes in favor of his mandate in the Wednesday session — four short of the absolute 176 majority needed from the 350-strong parliament. Despite his electoral win over the summer and support from hard right party Vox, Feijóo's Popular Party has so far failed to stitch together the critical support. Should he fail, acting Prime Minister and Spanish Socialist Workers' Party leader Pedro Sanchez has two months to undergo a similar two-vote process in a bid for investiture, before parliament dissolves on Nov. 27 and elections are called on Jan. 14. “The president will talk about how those steps — how all of those steps he’s taken so far ladder up to a larger vision.”After a long career in the Senate and as vice president, Mr. Biden enjoys a strong reputation among his peers and is seen as a committed internationalist fighting the tide of isolationism. He has also managed to stitch together a series of partnerships in the Indo-Pacific in the face of aggressive moves by China. At the same time, America’s two major rivals appear weakened. President Xi Jinping of China looks less potent internationally as his country’s four-decade streak of economic growth flattens while President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia cannot even travel to the United Nations meeting or other major international gatherings because of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for war crimes in Ukraine. The entertainment giant last week announced a commemorative box set containing its most acclaimed animated films from its storied history. The Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection features 100 films — one for each year of the House of Mouse's century-long history. Next month, Disney will increase the price of its Disney+ streaming service, where many of these films can be found, to $13.99 per month. That means the new box set will cost the same as roughly nine years of ad-free Disney+, or more than 15 years of the ad-supported $7.99 per month plan. Also in the box is a lithograph poster of "Wish," the company's upcoming animated film which will commemorate its centennial anniversary.

Amazon had no choice but to let Shopify merchants view Buy with Prime-related metrics on its own backend console, not within the unified Shopify Admin tool, according to the internal Amazon document from April. About five dozen people lost jobs when Stitch Fix ceased operations at the factory and mill in November, Mr. Ford said. By March, the facilities had reopened as Buck Mason Knitting Mills, and several of the employees who had worked at them for Stitch Fix had been rehired. The cloth mill in Shillington has started to produce fabrics for Buck Mason’s T-shirts and other tops using cotton grown in California, Georgia and Texas. Albert Bareika, who was hired by Buck Mason as the mill’s knitting lead in January, said there were plans to release a limited-edition T-shirt made with fabric produced at the facility on a 1940s-era Singer Supreme machine. Its Singer Supreme machine is one of a few still in operation, added Mr. Bareika, 66, who lives in nearby Leesport, Pa., and had previously worked for Stitch Fix at the mill.

Advanced chip packaging is a crucial technology that squeezes the most horsepower from the latest chip designs, and is crucial to chip contract manufacturers vying for business. The data from LexisNexis, released last month, indicates that TSMC and Samsung have steadily invested in advanced packaging technology for years, as Intel did not keep pace with its own filings. Packaging technology enabled the industry to stitch together several chips called "chiplets" - either stacked or adjacent to one another - within the same container. Samsung has been investing in advanced packaging for years but the South Korean chip giant established a dedicated team to pursue advanced packaging in December 2022, Moonsoo Kang, the unit's chief, said in a statement. Intel disputed the idea that the size of TSMC's patent portfolio indicated that it had developed more advanced technology.

ChatGPT, a publicly available language-learning AI, was not designed to create things like crochet or knitting patterns. Before we begin …A few notes on my methodology:For every crochet pattern I generated, I used the prompt “Create a crochet pattern for (blank).”I followed the crochet pattern exactly. At first glance, ChatGPT’s crochet patterns look and read exactly like a crochet pattern. In a traditional crochet pattern, instructions for assembly would note specific places and methods to attach pieces, along with photos or notes on particularly tricky steps. Theoretically, it would be possible to create AI that generated amazing crochet patterns, but that would require very specific training and programming.
