Shares in SoftBank's Arm Holdings (ARM.O) opened 18% above their offer price in their Nasdaq debut on Thursday, valuing the British chip designer at nearly $60 billion in its return to the public markets after seven years. "I have every reason to believe that when ARM options are listed they will be very popular," said Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. Arm shares were last up 15.80% at $59.06.

[1/2] Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell walks in Teton National Park where financial leaders from around the world gathered for the Jackson Hole economic symposium outside Jackson, Wyoming, U.S., August 26, 2022. REUTERS/Jim Urquhart/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Investors may be underestimating the degree of potential market turbulence stemming from the Federal Reserve's economic symposium at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, potentially leaving them more vulnerable to a hawkish surprise, options strategists said. This year's symposium also comes at a time when various asset classes have become more vulnerable to outsized moves following the Jackson Hole event, according to an analysis by derivatives strategists at Barclays. Across asset classes, the average volatility-adjusted move around Jackson Hole has almost doubled in the 2017-2022 period, compared with 2010-2016, the bank's strategists wrote in a note on Tuesday. U.S. bank shares dropped on Tuesday after ratings agency Moody's downgraded credit ratings of several U.S. regional lenders and placed some banking giants on review for potential downgrade. It warned lenders will find it harder to make money as interest rates remain high, funding costs climb and a potential recession looms. The warning caught some investors off guard. On Tuesday, SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF's (KRE.P) options-based 30-day implied volatility rose to 31.1%, up from 28.9% touched on Monday. "In the near term, there are reasons for caution about banks in general and we have made changes where appropriate," he said.

NEW YORK, July 28 (Reuters) - Shares of AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (AMC.N) have been hit by a wave of bearish options bets amid uncertainty over the company's stock conversion plan. While the common shares finished Thursday at $4.52, the APE preferred shares ended the session at $1.86. The move sent AMC’s shares higher, disappointing bearish traders who expected news of a conversion to tank the price. Still, options traders appear to be powering on with their bearish wagers, in effect betting the conversion will eventually go through. On Thursday, AMC shares finished down 10%, while APE shares rose 6%.

Russia turmoil to fuel market volatility, flight to safety

The question is how much and how lasting the reaction will be, much of which depends upon unknowable developments." It is reasonable to expect oil and other key commodity prices to rise. If oil prices rise sharply, that will indeed weigh upon equities and reignite stagflation fears. In theory it should benefit from a flight to safety, but in practice a strong dollar can impede it." “Probably bearish Indian stocks too as the dividend they’ve received from cheap Russian oil likely disappears.

Copper prices have jumped as much as 12% from their May 25 low, and that could signal green shoots for the economy. Copper prices have long been viewed as a leading economic indicator because it is utilized in various sectors of the economy. Essentially, rising copper prices could signal increased demand and therefore increased economic activity, and vice versa for when copper prices fall. But rising copper prices aren't always driven by an increase in demand for the commodity, and could instead be impacted by other factors. Sosnick also said that recent interest rate cuts in China could be impacting copper prices more so than broad economic strength "since other key commodities like oil are hardly signaling economic strength."

The European Central Bank will hold its policy meeting on Thursday, where it is expected to hike rates by another 25 basis points to tame stubborn inflation. Industrial metal prices rose after the People's Bank of China (PBOC) lowered a short-term lending rate for the first time in 10 months to prop up risk sentiment. Meanwhile, German consumer prices, harmonised to compare with other European Union countries, rose by 6.3% on the year in May, data showed. Since the VIX normally is used as a "fear gauge", he noted that was unusual, and asked what might have caused that. Remember, it is a measure of near-term (30-day) activity for S & P 500 put and call options. However, the put/call ratio has been low recently, between 0.7 and 0.8, as traders have been buying calls, betting the market will keep rising. Eric Johnston at Piper Sandler agrees: "The call buying has been very strong as investors chase upside," he told me. The recent events are that the market is rising, so the urge to buy protection declines: "When institutions get nervous, they seek protection in VIX.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index (.STOXX) ended 0.4% lower after a survey showed the U.S. services sector barely grew in May, while factory orders rose less than expected. "There's a bit of profit taking after some of the moves we've had recently," said Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. "The economic reports that we've gotten around the world (signal) a somewhat slowing economy." Enes EvrenMany investors are bracing for the economic fallout of the deadline for the U.S. to raise the debt ceiling or default on its obligations. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Sunday said that failing to raise the debt ceiling will cause a "steep economic downturn" in the U.S., reiterating the country's early June deadline. Experts say the current crisis could differ from the 2011 debt standoff, which ultimately led to a U.S. credit downgrade and significant market turmoil. One of the big concerns is how the Treasury may prioritize principal and interest payments for assets like bills or bonds in an unprecedented default. Under the 2011 contingency plan, there wouldn't have been a default on Treasurys, according to an August 2011 Federal Open Market Committee conference call transcript.
Here are 10 ways to protect against losses and volatility in this long-lasting bear market. "It went beyond dodging a bullet," Steve Sosnick, the chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, said of first quarter earnings results in a late April interview with Insider. Weaker earnings raise valuation concernsBut some investors aren't impressed by Q1 earnings — at least not enough to get bullish. Besides weaker earnings growth and lofty valuations, another risk for stocks is that upcoming quarterly results will miss higher expectations in a shaky economy. "We're still looking at fairly high-single-digit earnings growth for the next couple of quarters overall," Sosnick said.
At the halfway point for earnings, bulls are delighted earnings are coming in stronger than expected and expectations for the second half of the year remain high. With 260 companies in the S & P 500 reporting, 79% are beating expectations, according to Earnings Scout. That is an earnings recession, but the declines — all in the low single digits — are not causing a lot of consternation. Now, on the heels of positive earnings reports, many tech stocks are seeing second quarter earnings estimates rising in the past few weeks, including Microsoft, Meta and Alphabet. The second half of 2023: Record earnings, really?
NEW YORK, April 28 (Reuters) - Bearish options traders are ramping up bets on further declines in the beaten-down shares of First Republic Bank (FRC.N), though strategists say they could run into trouble cashing in their wagers if the bank goes into receivership. Profitable put options are typically automatically exercised by selling underlying shares - either already owned by the investors or newly purchased - at a profit. But brokers might restrict share sales when a stock is halted, keeping investors from reaping gains. Some traders found this out the hard way when they ran into trouble cashing in bearish options bets on failed lenders SVB Financial Group and Signature Bank. The Options Clearing Corp and brokerages Charles Schwab, Robinhood, Interactive Brokers and Fidelity did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
REUTERS/Brendan McDermidNEW YORK, April 20 (Reuters) - A debt ceiling fight is looming in the U.S. yet again, giving investors another worry for markets this year. Here is a Q&A about the implications for markets:WHAT IS THE DEBT CEILING? The debt ceiling is the maximum amount the U.S. government can borrow to meet its financial obligations. Outstanding government debt, nominal gross domestic product and federal limit to borrowWHEN WILL THE U.S. HIT THE DEBT CEILING? Some Treasury bills (T-bills) are featuring a premium in their yields that may be tied to an elevated default risk, according to some analysts.

SYDNEY/NEW YORK, March 13 (Reuters) - U.S. regulators may have stemmed a banking crisis by guaranteeing deposits of collapsed Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), but some experts warn that the move has encouraged bad investor behaviour. Following a weekend of discussions over the future of SVB owner SVB Financial Group , banking regulators unveiled emergency funding plans for the bank. Yet by guaranteeing that depositors would lose no money, authorities have again raised the question of moral hazard - removal of people's incentive to guard against financial risk. "If all bank deposits are now insured, why do you need banks?" Some 89% of around $200 billion in deposits held by SVB at the end of 2022 was uninsured, according to the FDIC.
March 13 (Reuters) - The U.S. government announced actions to shore up deposits and stem any broader financial fallout from the sudden collapse of tech startup-focused lender Silicon Valley Bank (SIVB.O) (SVB), sending U.S. stock futures higher. "The market turbulence sparked by SVB has upended rising market expectations on the Fed rate path. The fact that SVB and Signature Bank depositors will be made whole is critical in maintaining trust in the financial system and should help stem contagion fears this week. But it also means that 50 basis points (a possible Fed interest rate hike) is off the table." Given what's happened in the U.S. financial system, a 25 basis point hike is more likely than a 50 basis point hike."

SVB Financial's share plunge is dragging on major bank stocks like JPMorgan and Bank of America. Here's everything you need to know about Silicon Valley Bank and its parent company SVB Financial. SVB is a Santa Clara-based bank that lends money to and takes deposits from Silicon Valley tech startups. Why has SVB's stock price crashed? "The failure of SVB Financial could destroy an important long-term driver of the economy as VC-backed companies rely on SVB for loans and holding their operating cash," he said on Twitter Thursday evening.
A California regulator shut Silicon Valley Bank on Friday and appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as receiver, according to the agency's statement. With many stocks in the sector falling sharply on Friday, traders rushed in to defensive bets. SVB is battling cash burn due to declining deposits from startups struggling with a venture capital funding drought. While investors had largely shrugged off Silvergate’s troubles as strictly crypto-related, "(SVB Financial Group) was a giant wake-up call about the effects of rising rates and an inverted yield curve," Sosnick said.
