MANAMA, March 2 (Reuters) - Mick Schumacher's Formula One struggles last season feature strongly in the latest run of 'Drive to Survive' but the German says he feels no need to watch the Netflix docu-series. "I didn't watch it...that's a personal choice," Schumacher told Reuters when asked about the series at a 75th anniversary event for sportswear maker Puma at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. "I just don't necessarily feel the need to watch myself on TV, I guess." Schumacher muses separately, in a frank scene on a Swiss mountainside, about the difficulties he faces and his determination to succeed. With the retirement of four times world champion Sebastian Vettel, the only German driver is veteran Nico Hulkenberg as Schumacher's replacement at Haas.
F1 team bosses have their own light-bulb moment

LONDON, Feb 26 (Reuters) - The late McLaren boss Teddy Mayer liked to compare Formula One drivers to interchangeable light-bulbs, declaring "you plug them in and they do the job", and nowadays the same might be said for team principals. The Frenchman is on his third different team, after stints at Sauber and Renault. "It shows also that the role of the team principal is maybe sometimes also a bit over-rated because if you can change it so quickly and there is no big impact, it tells also something. Sauber, with Swedish billionaire Finn Rausing as chairman of the board, will become the Audi works team from 2026. "But other than that we must not forget that F1 teams have developed into big organisations where the owners are not any more the team principals... some have engineers as team principals, some have more an old-fashioned rule."
While worldwide deaths from terrorism have declined in the last five years, deaths in sub-Saharan Africa have risen, making it now the global epicentre of attacks, the UNDP report said, citing an annual survey called the Global Terrorism Index. Countries from east to west Africa have seen Islamist militant groups take over large swathes of territory, displacing millions, eroding faith in democratic government and causing widespread hunger. The UNDP report found that 25% of voluntary recruits to such groups cited job opportunities as their primary reason for joining, while 22% cited wanting to join with family and friends and 17% cited religious ideas. An additional year of schooling reduced the likelihood of voluntary recruitment to extremist groups by 13%, it found. The Global Terrorism Index is produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace think-tank, which draws its data from the Terrorism Tracker database of Dragonfly, a private sector security and intelligence service.

Officials from some 40 countries as well as private donors and international financial institutions gathered at a meeting in Geneva as Islamabad sought funds to cover around half of a recovery bill amounting to $16.3 billion. The meeting’s co-hosts, the United Nations and Pakistan’s government, said more than $9 billion had been pledged from bilateral and multilateral partners. Among the donors were the Islamic Development Bank ($4.2 billion), the World Bank ($2 billion), Saudi Arabia ($1 billion), as well as the European Union and China, Pakistan Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said. “Today has truly been a day which gives us great hope,” said Hina Rabbani Khar, Pakistan’s minister of state for foreign affairs. Millions of homes, tens of thousands of schools as well as thousands of kilometers of roads and railways still need to be rebuilt, the UN says.
Porsche and several partners have started production of a climate neutral "e-fuel" aimed at replacing gasoline in vehicles with traditional internal combustion engines. The German automaker, owned by Volkswagen , said Tuesday that a pilot plant in Chile started commercial production of the alternative fuel. By mid-decade, Porsche is planning to produce millions of gallons of the e-fuel. Plans are to expand that to about 55 million liters (14.5 million U.S. gallons) by mid-decade, and around 550 million liters (145.3 million U.S. gallons) roughly two years later. Porsche officials celebrated the beginning of the e-fuel production with the filling of a Porsche 911 with the first synthetic fuel produced at the site.
That's just how F1 is, says Hulkenberg on Schumacher's exit

Nov 21 (Reuters) - Germany's Nico Hulkenberg showed little sympathy on Monday for Mick Schumacher after replacing his younger compatriot at the Haas Formula One team next season. "That’s just how F1 is and ultimately the driver, when he’s racing, he has to convince the team with performance. Le Mans 24 Hours winner Hulkenberg has started 181 races but last raced full-time in Formula One in 2019 with Renault, now Alpine. Hulkenberg said the desire to get back on the grid had returned this season and he contacted Haas team boss Guenther Steiner. Times have moved on, both drivers now have young daughters and Hulkenberg said he expected a good relationship.

Haas to announce Mick Schumacher's F1 fate next week

SAO PAULO, Nov 12 (Reuters) - Haas will announce next week whether Mick Schumacher is staying or going, the Formula One team's boss Guenther Steiner said on Saturday. The German's predicament was not helped by qualifying for Saturday's Sao Paulo Grand Prix sprint race when he ended up last while team mate Kevin Magnussen took a surprise pole position. "Expect the announcement some time next week," Steiner told reporters, amid increasing speculation the team's decision has been made. It will be coming next week," said Steiner. The first two runs were very good but then with the dry tyres he just couldn't get the feeling," he said.
NO KIDDING"You're kidding," Magnussen had said over the team radio when told he was fastest as the red flags were waved. Saturday will be the third such race of the season, with Verstappen winning the two previous ones at Imola and in Austria. Seven-times world champion Hamilton suffered as a result of his team mate's spin and will start the sprint from eighth place. "I will speak to the team and understand what we can do better in those conditions," he said. "I accepted the decision to go on the inters and then I waited for the rain that never came."
Magnussen's stunning pole is soup for Steiner

Nov 11 (Reuters) - Haas team boss Guenther Steiner savoured a rare moment of success as his Formula One backmarkers pulled off an astonishing first pole position with Kevin Magnussen at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix on Friday. "When it rains soup, you need to have a spoon ready," the Italian told Sky Sports television. Last year, with Schumacher and Magnussen's now-departed Russian predecessor Nikita Mazepin, Haas failed to score a point all season and ended last. "You will always have nay-sayers but welcome to our pole position, nay-sayers," said Steiner in response to those who questioned what his men could achieve. It was starting to rain so that was the crucial part today, just getting that best track for me.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationNov 9 (Reuters) - Election misinformation is spreading across social media platforms like Twitter and Meta Platform's (META.O) Facebook, as the vote count for the U.S. midterm elections continued on Wednesday in key battleground states, experts said. As key battleground states like Arizona continue to tabulate results, "we could see a spike in disinformation about the count," she said. The proliferation of such content raises questions of how social media platforms are enforcing their policies against misleading content about elections. Common Cause, which monitors social media for voter suppression efforts, said on Tuesday that Twitter had taken no action on posts that the organization had flagged as problematic.

Lotte, South Korea's second largest grocer, becomes Ocado's 12th partner across 10 countries. Ocado's in-store fulfilment technology will also be rolled out across Lotte stores from 2024. Lotte Shopping, part of South Korea's Lotte Group conglomerate, operates department stores, hypermarkets, supermarkets and e-commerce, with more than 1,000 stores nationwide and an annual revenue of 9.5 billion pounds ($10.9 billion). Ocado Group's shares have been hurt this year by the performance of Ocado Retail, its retail joint venture with Marks & Spencer (MKS.L).
Ocado’s South Korean deal is valuation rocket fuel

Shares in the 5.4 billion pound ($6.2 billion) online grocer surged almost 40% on Tuesday after it inked a new deal with South Korea’s Lotte Shopping (023530.KS). The warehouses could bring in about 2.1 billion pounds of annual sales when operating at full capacity, Numis analysts reckon. That implies about 100 million pounds of annual revenue, equivalent to 4% of sales in the last financial year. Most significantly, it shows that Steiner’s strategy of building warehouses for supermarkets worldwide may have legs. Steiner’s South Korean deal offers his company some valuation rocket fuel.
When Louis S. “Tom” Gimbel III was a boy, his father’s side of the family ran the Gimbels department-store chain, including a huge store at Herald Square in Manhattan. His mother’s family brewed Rheingold beer and traded in hops. After graduating from Yale and serving in the Air Force, Mr. Gimbel chose hops over retailing. He joined the family’s S.S. Steiner Inc. in the 1950s, took a crash course in brewing, moved into sales and by the late 1960s, was running the company with his younger brother, Stinor. He later bought his brother’s stake and ran the company on his own.
LONDON, Oct 11 (Reuters) - The United Nations' Development Programme (UNDP) joined on Tuesday the chorus of institutions and charities warning that a serious debt crisis is now taking hold in the poorest parts of the world. "A serious debt crisis is unfolding across developing economies, and the likelihood of a worsening outlook is high," the report published on Tuesday said. Without effective debt restructuring, poverty will rise and desperately needed investments in climate adaptation and mitigation will not happen. Its proposal was to expand the Common Framework's eligibility so that all heavily indebted countries could utilise it rather just the 70 or so poorest countries, and for any debt payments to be automatically suspended during the process. "Not only have these countries contributed the least to, but bear the highest cost of, climate change".

Here's what parents of successful kids have in common, according to research. Children with parents who stepped in to provide instructions frequently displayed more difficulty regulating their emotions later, the researchers wrote. "Too much direct engagement can come at a cost to kids' abilities to control their own attention, behavior and emotions. When parents let kids take the lead in their interactions, children practice self-regulation skills and build independence," Obradović wrote in the study. The parents tend to take parental leave.
