Turner died Tuesday evening after his “hard-fought battle” with injuries sustained in the accident, Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers said in a statement Wednesday. “Johnnie spent his life lifting others — whether through his service in the U.S. Army, as a member of the State House of Representatives and State Senate, or in his private legal practice,” Stivers said. Turner pushed for pro-coal legislation and other measures aimed at uplifting his Appalachian district, spanning several counties in eastern Kentucky. Turner, an attorney, won election to the state Senate in 2020, ousting a Democratic incumbent with the same last name. With his death coming so close to the election, Turner’s name will appear on the general election ballot, the secretary of state’s office said.

A Georgia judge on Tuesday blocked a new rule from the state's election board that would have required counties to count ballots cast on Election Day by hand, a provision critics had said would cause delays and disruptions in reporting results in the battleground state. An Orange County, California, man has been arrested in connection with acts of vandalism in which anti-Asian slurs that were spray-painted over campaign signs for Democratic congressional candidate Dave Min, who’s Korean American. It comes after reports of two separate incidents in which signs were spray-painted with an anti-Korean derogatory term. A video documenting the vandalism, that was posted on the Democratic candidate’s social media, shows the hate speech, written in silver paint, across a row of signs. Police said they first responded to a report of vandalism last Tuesday, when they found Min signs defaced with the offensive language. “The Huntington Beach Police Department takes vandalism seriously, particularly when it involves hate speech,” the police said in a news release last week.
