The Michigan primary was moved up near the front of the Democratic presidential nominating calendar this year. Biden defeated Trump in Michigan by about 150,000 votes four years later. The primary in South Carolina is open, meaning Democrats and independents can cast ballots in the GOP race. The former president does not need to open a larger tent in order to win in South Carolina.
