“No company is too big to ensure that their products do not damage our environment and public health. All New Yorkers have a basic right to clean water, yet PepsiCo’s irresponsible packaging and marketing endanger Buffalo’s water supply, environment, and public health,” James said in a statement. PepsiCo is the single largest identifiable contributor to the plastic waste contaminating the Buffalo River, according to the lawsuit. Microplastics have also been found in fish species that are known to inhabit Lake Erie and the Buffalo River, as well as Buffalo's drinking water supply, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that the opposite is happening, and that PepsiCo misled the public about its efforts to combat plastic pollution.

CNN —Archaeologists in Germany have uncovered a centuries-old skeleton complete with a metal prosthetic hand to replace four missing fingers. This would make the prosthetic hand potentially almost 600 years old. A bandage-like fabric was found inside the prosthetic hand, suggesting that it was used to cushion the stump. And an even older, 3,000-year-old prosthetic wooden toe was uncovered by archaeologists in Egypt in 1997. Worn by a priest’s daughter, the toe was was made to both enable walking and look aesthetically natural, archaeologists later discovered.

Fontes’s office told the group last month that it is obligated to accept filings from candidates even if party leaders reject them. No Labels has drawn extra scrutiny in Arizona, one of a dozen states where it has secured ballot access for a potential presidential candidate. By refusing to nominate candidates for state offices, No Labels argues it is not subject to Arizona’s campaign finance disclosure laws. The party argues state law allows political parties to participate only in elections that they choose and the U.S. Constitution protects the party’s right to freely associate or not associate with candidates. Candidates have filed statements of interest to run for U.S. Senate and Arizona Corporation Commission, the state’s utility regulator.

REUTERS/Amr Alfiky/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 18(Reuters) - A number of U.S. banks saw continued pain in the third quarter on delinquent commercial real estate (CRE) loans in their portfolios, as stress in the sector persists. As a result, banks recorded continued provisions for credit losses and charge-offs from the previous quarter, driven by their non-performing (NPL), or delinquent, CRE loans. Borrowers have struggled to refinance their CRE loans as property values have declined and interest costs have risen. Some $20 billion of office commercial mortgage-backed securities, which bundle together individual loans, mature in 2023, according to real estate data provider Trepp. "While overall credit quality remains strong across our portfolio, the pressures we anticipated within the commercial real estate office sector have begun to materialize," PNC Chief Financial Officer Robert Reilly told analysts.

Political Cartoons View All 1211 ImagesAuthorities responding to an “abhorrent smell” entered the funeral home’s neglected building with a search warrant Oct. 4 and found the decomposing bodies. Colorado has some of the weakest rules for funeral homes in the nation with no routine inspections or qualification requirements for funeral home operators. There’s no indication state regulators visited the site or contacted Hallford until more than 10 months after the Penrose funeral home’s registration expired. State lawmakers gave regulators the authority to inspect funeral homes without the owners’ consent last year, but no additional money was provided for increased inspections.

Bottom line Wells Fargo's quarterly revenue outpaced expectations on the back of better-than-expected results for both net interest income (NII) and non-interest income. Middle-market banking revenue increased 23% year-over-year, as higher interest rates and loan balances were only partially offset by lower deposits. Asset-based lending and leasing revenue was up 3% annually, a result of loan growth and increased revenue from renewable energy investments. Total banking revenues increased 20% year-over-year, a result of higher rates and lending revenues, along with "higher investment banking revenue on increased activity across all products." Commercial real estate revenue increased 14% year-over-year, due to higher rates and revenue growth in the firm's low-income housing business.

The very existence of the No Labels group is fanning Democratic anxiety about Trump’s chances against an incumbent president facing questions about his age and record. If even a small number of those voters were to back a No Labels candidate next year, Biden could fall short. No Labels party members skew younger. Twelve percent of them live in the 4th Congressional District, which includes Arizona State University. Such a poll would be meaningless because a large swath of voters won’t know anything about the No Labels candidate before a campaign is run, he said.

NEW YORK (AP) — Researchers have uncovered a simple structure from the Stone Age that may be the oldest evidence yet of early humans building with wood. But it is much more complex than I thought.”Barham and his team dug up the log structure — plus a handful of wooden tools — from a riverbed site that sits above a waterfall in Zambia. They think the crossed logs could have been the base for a bigger structure like a walkway or a platform. The log structure was made at least 476,000 years ago, while the wood tools are slightly younger, under 400,000 years old. ___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group.

London CNN —Fraudsters have robbed Europe’s largest copper producer of €185 million ($198 million) worth of the metal, possibly with the help of insiders, the company said Tuesday. The inventory had established the scale of thefts the company disclosed on August 31 and in June, an Aurubis spokesperson told CNN. The losses forced Aurubis to slash its pretax profit forecast for the current fiscal year by about €170 million ($182 million). Whether the same criminals are behind these past cases and the theft disclosed in August is the subject of ongoing investigations, the Aurubis spokesperson said Tuesday. Aurubis produces about 1.1 million tonnes (1.2 million tons) of copper “cathodes,” or square sheets, per year at plants in Europe and the United States.

London CNN —Aurubis, Europe’s largest copper producer, says it has been the target of a huge theft, with damages running into hundreds of millions of euros. “During a scheduled review of metal inventories, Aurubis has identified considerable discrepancies in target inventory,” the German company said Thursday in a statement. Shares in the group were down 14% at 1030 GMT, at their lowest level in nearly 10 months, after the company said it would miss its full-year profit guidance having found what it described as "considerable discrepancies" in inventories. Aurubis had said in June that several employee workspaces and the on-site offices of contractors at its Hamburg site were searched as part of an investigation into a suspected organised theft ring. "During a scheduled review of metal inventories, Aurubis has identified considerable discrepancies in target inventory as well as in individual samples from specific shipments of input materials for the recycling area," it said late on Thursday. "This evidence has led Aurubis to conclude that it has been the target of further criminal activity following the cases reported in June 2023. Germany's second-largest steelmaker Salzgitter (SZGG.DE), which holds a 29.99% stake in Aurubis, also suspended its financial guidance, sending its shares 1.6% lower.

To the Editor:Re “Trump Indictment, Part IV: A Spectacle That Has Become Surreally Routine,” by Peter Baker (news analysis, nytimes.com, Aug. 15):The grand jury’s RICO indictment is historic because it rightly accuses the former president and his co-conspirators of a gang-like assault on democracy. It is significant too because it recognizes the courageous refusal of state officeholders, mostly Republican, to violate the law. This is not the first or only time that Americans owe a huge debt of gratitude to our Black women compatriots. To the Editor:Like many who are concerned about the rule of law and equal treatment under the law, I was delighted to see former President Donald Trump and 18 others indicted by a Georgia grand jury. This is a sweeping indictment, accusing Mr. Trump of being the head of a “criminal enterprise” to overturn the election.
