Jes Staley, former CEO of Barclays, arrives at the offices of Boies Schiller Flexner LLP in New York on June 11, 2023. LONDON — Former Barclays CEO Jes Staley on Thursday was fined and banned from holding any position of influence in the U.K. financial services industry for misleading the regulator over his relationship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. "Mr Staley is an experienced industry professional and held a prominent position within financial services. Emails subsequently emerged in which Staley described Epstein as one of his "deepest" and "most cherished" friends, the FCA confirmed. Barclays' letter also claimed Staley had ceased contact with Epstein long before he joined the bank in December 2015.

Mr Staley failed to do this,” Therese Chambers, joint executive director of enforcement and market oversight at the FCA, said in the statement. The FCA found that Staley “recklessly” approved a letter Barclays sent to the watchdog, which contained two misleading statements, the agency said. The letter, in response to an FCA request in August 2019, claimed that Staley did not have a close relationship with Epstein. “In reality, in emails between the two Mr Staley described Mr Epstein as one of his ‘deepest’ and ‘most cherished’ friends,’” the FCA said. The Barclays letter also claimed Staley had ceased contact with Epstein well before he joined the British bank in December 2015.

But in email messages, Staley described Epstein as one of his “deepest” and “most cherished” friends, according to the regulator. The FCA’s decision is provisional and Staley, who has previously said he “deeply regrets” his relationship with Epstein, can appeal at an ensuing tribunal. Barclays said that following the FCA’s decision, Staley was ineligible for, or would forfeit, bonuses and share awards totaling 17.8 million pounds (21.9 million). Staley has said that he had no contact with Epstein once he joined Barclays in December 2015. JP Morgan also reached a confidential settlement with Staley, who it had sued for allegedly concealing his personal activities with Epstein from the bank.

U.S. financier Jeffrey Epstein appears in a photograph taken for the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services' sex offender registry March 28, 2017 and obtained by Reuters July 10, 2019. Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Wall Street is getting ready to move on from the Jeffrey Epstein saga. It ultimately has cost JPMorgan some $365 million in settlements, including Tuesday’s proposed resolution, while Deutsche is paying out $75 million. Some financiers linked to Epstein, who killed himself while in jail awaiting trial in 2019, also paid a price. He also reached a $63 million deal with the U.S. Virgin Islands to avoid any legal claims linked to the investigations.

JPMorgan did not admit any wrongdoing in the settlement, which will give $55 million to Virgin Islands charities and the American territory's anti-trafficking efforts. The remaining $20 million will cover attorneys' fees incurred by the Virgin Islands as part of the litigation in federal court in New York. The Virgin Islands said the deal "includes several substantial commitments by JPMorgan Chase to identify, report, and cut off support for potential human trafficking, including establishing and implementing comprehensive policies and procedures." Virgin Islands Attorney General Ariel Smith said the agreement settles what was the first enforcement action against a bank for facilitating and profiting from human trafficking. The Virgin Islands previously obtained a $105 million settlement from Epstein's estate, and another $62.5 million from billionaire investor Leon Black to resolve potential claims related to Epstein.

NEW YORK (AP) — JPMorgan Chase agreed Tuesday to pay $75 million to the U.S. Virgin Islands to settle claims that the bank enabled the sex trafficking acts committed by financier Jeffrey Epstein. JPMorgan said that $55 million of the settlement will go toward local charities and assistance for victims. The Virgin Islands, where Epstein had an estate, sued JPMorgan last year, saying its investigation has revealed that the financial services giant enabled Epstein’s recruiters to pay victims and was “indispensable to the operation and concealment of the Epstein trafficking enterprise." JPMorgan sued Staley earlier this year, alleging that he covered up or minimized Epstein's wrongdoing in order to maintain the lucrative account. JPMorgan had already agreed to pay $290 million in June in a class-action lawsuit that involved victims of Epstein's trafficking crimes.

New York CNN —JPMorgan Chase has reached a settlement with the US Virgin Islands over a lawsuit alleging the bank enabled Jeffrey Epstein’s sex-trafficking crimes. The settlement includes “significant commitments” by JPMorgan Chase to curtail human trafficking, and a $75 million payment to the US Virgin Islands. Epstein was arrested in 2019 on federal charges of sex trafficking dozens of underage girls. The bank said that $30 million of the settlement will help support charitable organizations working to end human trafficking and to support survivors. Another $25 million will be paid to the USVI to enhance infrastructure and bolster law enforcement.

The funds come on top of the $290 million JPMorgan Chase has already agreed to settle a separate class-action lawsuit brought by Epstein victims, to fund a compensation program. JPMorgan said its $75 million settlement with the USVI includes $30 million to support charitable organizations, $25 million to strengthen law enforcement to combat human trafficking, and $20 million for attorney's fees. Epstein died in August 2019 in a Manhattan jail cell while awaiting trial for sex trafficking. INTERNAL WARNINGSIn July, USVI said it wanted JPMorgan to pay at least $190 million, including a $150 million civil fine, and possibly much more to resolve the lawsuit. Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE), where Epstein was a client from 2013 to 2018, in May reached a $75 million settlement with women who said Epstein sexually abused them. The U.S. Virgin Islands sued JPMorgan in December, and about a month later, lawyers for Mr. Epstein’s victims had sued the bank. The money the bank is paying to the Virgin Islands, where Mr. Epstein had a private island residence for roughly two decades, will mostly go toward funding charitable causes in the U.S. territory in the Caribbean and paying lawyer fees. Mr. Epstein killed himself in a federal jail in Manhattan in August 2019, a month after he had was arrested on federal sex trafficking charges. Mr. Epstein had been a client of JPMorgan both before and after he pleaded guilty in 2008 to a charge of soliciting prostitution from a teenage girl and had to register as a sex offender in New York, Florida and the Virgin Islands. The parties, however, took issue with how each side had characterized some of the terms of the settlement in their respective news releases.

Attorneys for former JPMorgan executive Jes Staley revealed the fee total in a filing late Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. On Thursday, his lawyers filed a new version of the document that redacted the reference to the bank's legal fees. JP Morgan spokeswoman Patricia Wexler declined to comment on the bank's purported legal costs from the suit. JPMorgan was sued last year by "Doe" in a would-be class action case on behalf of herself and other young women who were trafficked by the late money manager Epstein. The bank separately was sued by the government of the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Epstein had maintained a residence on a private island, where he sexually abused women.

LONDON (AP) — Global energy giant BP, one of Britain’s biggest and most recognizable companies, is scurrying to find a new chief executive after CEO Bernard Looney became the latest corporate leader to step down amid questions about his personal conduct. BP conducted an internal review last year after receiving allegations about personal relationships between Looney and other company employees. “The company has strong values and the board expects everyone at the company to behave in accordance with those values,” BP said. Looney had spent his entire career at BP after joining the company as an engineer in 1991. Soon after becoming CEO, Looney set a goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 — in line with goals then adopted by the U.K. government.

Kim Mulkey, the coach of defending national champion LSU, has agreed to a 10-year contract worth about $32 million that will set a new mark for the richest coaching contract in women's college basketball, according to a person with knowledge of the deal. The deal also still needs approval from the LSU Board of Supervisors, who are scheduled to vote on it Friday. The Hall of Fame coach has been at LSU for two seasons, during which she has taken a program that missed the NCAA Tournament three seasons ago and elevated it to the pinnacle of its sport. At least one longtime sexual abuse victim of Jeffrey Epstein who received a monetary settlement from his estate can also pursue separate claims against two powerful former Wall Street executives who had ties to the convicted sex offender, according to two people briefed on the matter. The exceptions made for Mr. Black and Mr. Staley show how the two men continue to be dogged by their social and business dealings with Mr. Epstein four years after he killed himself in a federal jail while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. The arrangement could set a precedent for other victims of Mr. Epstein, potentially exposing Mr. Black and Mr. Staley to further scrutiny and liability. “She was a victim, potentially, to these individuals,” Mr. Kahn said in the deposition, according to one of the people.
