CNN —US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle faced off Monday with angry lawmakers from both parties, who grilled her over the stunning security failures that led to the recent assassination attempt against Donald Trump. Before Trump took the stage at the rally, the director said, the Secret Service had been notified “between two and five times” that there was a suspicious person in the area. Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna pointed out that the Secret Service director who ran the agency when Reagan was shot eventually resigned from his post. Before Trump took the stage on July 13, the Secret Service had been notified “between two and five times” that there was a suspicious person in the area, Cheatle said. Female agents who were part of Trump’s Secret Service detail were photographed shielding the former president after the failed assassination attempt.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s security detail had complained they were not being given enough resources and personnel by the Secret Service over the past two years, and the agency acknowledged Saturday it denied some requests. A spokesperson for the Secret Service said in a statement Saturday that the agency has not provided certain resources in the past but has instead provided other security measures including from local partners. The Washington Post and The New York Times reported earlier Saturday that the Secret Service denied previous request from Trump’s security team over the past two years. In response to questions from CNN over whether the Secret Service had denied additional security requests, a spokesperson told CNN the agency makes “modifications” when certain resources are not provided to protectees. “In some instances where specific Secret Service specialized units or resources were not provided, the agency made modifications to ensure the security of the protectee,” Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the Secret Service, wrote in a statement.

The official said that the Secret Service had even tried to deny a request from Trump's team to install metal detectors at his son Barron Trump's high school graduation in May, which the former president attended with his wife, Melania. The official told The Times that the Secret Service had argued that the graduation was not a "political" event before eventually caving in. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi previously said that "there's an untrue assertion that a member of the former president's team requested additional resources and that those were rebuffed." In the days following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, Cheatle has done no press conferences and very few interviews. “We would have never let him go out there if we thought there was a threat to him,” one source present with Trump told CNN. Cheatle is a nearly three-decade veteran of the Secret Service, serving in various field offices and vice presidential details including then-Vice President Joe Biden’s detail. Cheatle left the Secret Service in 2021 as the Assistant Director of the Office of Protective Operations - a role she held when the Secret Service scrambled to protect then-Vice President Mike Pence from rioters on January 6, 2021. “I’m very sorry to reach this conclusion: I have no confidence in the leadership of the United States Secret Service.

CNN —Donald Trump may not have changed in the past week, but the presidential race clearly has. ► Watched President Joe Biden be isolated by the growing number of Democrats who worry he can’t beat him. If Biden were to look for inspiration on how to overcome the naysayers, he could find it in Trump. When Democrats win those states, they can win the White House. In the intervening days, CNN has learned that Crooks searched for information on both Trump and Biden, including for details about the Democratic National Convention.

Investigators found a small drone in the car owned by the gunman who tried to assassinate former President Donald J. Trump — and believe it was used to survey the site of Mr. Trump’s rally in Butler, Pa., at least once before the shooting, according to law enforcement officials. Thomas Crooks, 20, visited the area near the fairgrounds used for the rally on July 7 — six days before the event — and appears to have made another trip the morning of the shooting, according to geolocation data found on one of his two cellphones, the officials said. At some point last Saturday, Mr. Crooks seems to have flown the drone to gather footage for a layout of the Butler Farm Show grounds using a preprogrammed flight path, according to an official briefed on the situation who requested anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak about a continuing investigation. The discovery of the drone was delayed when investigators found two rudimentary explosive devices in his Hyundai Sonata shortly after Mr. Crooks — a highly intelligent and technologically sophisticated community college graduate — was felled by a sniper after bloodying Mr. Trump’s ear, killing a man in the crowd and seriously injuring two other people.

Behind the stage where Trump will speak to teams of Secret Service snipers are posted on top of sheds. The Secret Service is also protecting the area closest to the stage for areas further away. About an hour before a gunman let loose a volley of bullets that nearly assassinated a former president, the law enforcement contingent in Butler, Pa., was on the verge of a great policing success. Among the thousands of people streaming in to cheer former President Donald J. Trump at a campaign rally on Saturday, local officers spotted one skinny young man acting oddly and notified other law enforcement. The suspicious man did not appear to have a weapon. Remarkably, law enforcement had found the right man — Thomas Matthew Crooks, a would-be assassin, though officers did not know that at the time. Twenty minutes before violence erupted, a sniper, from a distance, spotted Mr. Crooks again and took his picture.

The building from which a gunman fired at former President Trump on Saturday was — at least in hindsight — an obvious security risk. Its rooftop offered an ideal sniper’s perch, with a close, elevated and unobstructed view of Mr. Trump. But when the Secret Service drew up plans for Saturday’s rally, it left that building outside its security perimeter. Instead, local law enforcement officials were given responsibility for that building, and no police officers were stationed on the roof itself. The building, used as a warehouse by equipment manufacturer AGR International, has become a focal point of myriad investigations into the shooting that nearly felled a former American president, one that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas on Monday called a security failure.

Editor's note: This is a developing story and will be updated throughout the day. The Secret Service is under growing pressure to explain what went wrong in the hours and minutes before a gunman opened fire in an attempted assassination on former President Donald Trump at his Pennsylvania rally on Saturday. "The Secret Service is working with all involved federal, state and local agencies to understand what happened, how it happened, and how we can prevent an incident like this from ever taking place again," Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said in a statement Monday. The Secret Service is not substantially changing its security plan for the Republican National Convention, which kicks off Monday, Cheatle said, despite the Saturday shooting.
