NEW YORK — The hometown kid came to the rescue on Tuesday, saving the New York Yankees from elimination in the World Series. Freddie Freeman set a record in defeat, becoming the first player to hit homers in six consecutive World Series games, a streak that began with Atlanta in 2021. Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers never got much going and the Yankees pulled away with a late offensive explosion. AdvertisementThrough four games this series, the Dodgers have managed 12 runs off Yankees starters in 16 innings. In 19 2/3 innings against the Yankees bullpen, they’ve scored six — and just one since their furious comeback in Game 1.

Let’s do that now, because here’s what I think we’ve been watching:A World Series with possibly eight future Hall of Famers. So no World Series is ever catching the 1932 Series, when an incredible 13 eventual Hall of Famers took the field. How about saying you were there when Freddie Freeman took over a World Series in his own Freddie-esque way? And it looks exactly like that dude who trots — or sometimes limps — out to first base every night in this World Series. • Easy as 1-2-3 — We’re three games into this World Series, and Freeman has homered in all three of those games.

A surprise trip to Dodger Stadium became the best day of a young Dodger fan’s life. The 5th grader caught the ball that was coming directly toward where he and his parents were sitting. “He had just tears of joy.”While any fan that packed Dodger Stadium would have been thrilled to have the grand slam ball, Zachary said other fans were happy for him. I was just mobbed,” the young fan recalled. It was just such an amazing atmosphere.”The family is now trying to get the ball signed by Freddie Freeman himself.

It was only the fourth time in 36 World Series games since 2018 that the audience has cracked 15 million. The last one before Friday was the seventh and deciding game in the 2019 series, when Washington’s 6-2 victory over Houston for its first championship averaged 23 million. The Rangers’ 6-5 win over the Diamondbacks in 11 innings averaged 9.35 million, and was the least-viewed Game 1 on record. Friday’s game was the most-watched Game 1 since Los Angeles’ 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros in 2017 averaged 15.33 million. They’re in that hallowed Extra-inning World Series Walk-off Club. (Jayne Kamin-Oncea / Imagn Images)This was the 693rd game in World Series history. But you would think wrong — because the complete list of men to do that consists of …Freddie Freeman! We had a hunch he was the first player in history to do that in a World Series. The trio of Tommy Edman, Teoscar Hernández and Freddie Freeman combined to swat home runs off Yankees starter Carlos Rodón. The Dodgers demonstrated the depth of their roster besides Ohtani; he went hitless and the club still cruised. Handed a lead, Yamamoto limited the Yankees to one run in 6 1/3 innings while wielding his split-fingered fastball like a scythe. But he may be more important to the Yankees than Ohtani is to the Dodgers. In the 10th inning of Game 1, he warmed up two left-handed relievers to prepare to face Ohtani and Freeman.

Freddie Freeman played Kirk Gibson this time, lashing Nestor Cortes’ first pitch over the right field fence for the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history. Will Smith made him pay with a sacrifice fly to right field in the next at-bat to give Los Angeles a 1-0 lead. In the fifth inning, Soto misplayed a Hernández triple down the right-field line, which Statcast estimated had a 5 percent catch probability. Then, in the eighth inning, Ohtani blasted a double off the right-field wall. For all of his offensive success, Soto’s biggest weakness remains his defense, which cost the Yankees in Game 1.

After his final swing in a 6-3 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the World Series, he only had to trot. He swatted a 10th-inning walk-off grand slam on Friday night, a slight improvement on Gibson’s legendary walk-off in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series. Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty kept the Yankees off the board until Giancarlo Stanton hit a monstrous, two-run homer in the sixth. The season of “Fernandomania” coincided with the last time the Dodgers and Yankees met in the World Series. The lumber landed on the World Series logo.

In the final days of the race, Harris is expected to stress that she still believes she and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, are the “underdogs” in the race and that “nothing can be left on the field,” a Harris aide said. Harris has also started to use video clips of Trump’s comments at her rallies, a pattern that is expected to continue. A Harris campaign aide said the strategy is viewed as a “smart way to force a conversation about him.”“A huge part of our thinking is that we need to show his lack of fitness,” the person said. “Donald Trump’s comments continue to become more bizarre and more strange, and that’s something that should concern the American people and, in these closing days,” Garcia told NBC News on Wednesday, “Kamala Harris will make that argument.”

Twenty-three Nobel Prize-winning economists endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump in a joint letter released Wednesday. The nearly two dozen economists said Trump's economic agenda, which includes hardline tariff proposals and a slate of aggressive tax cuts, would "lead to higher prices, larger deficits, and greater inequality." Joseph Stiglitz, who won the Nobel Prize for his market economics research in 2001, spearheaded the joint endorsement among his fellow laureates. Stiglitz led a similar effort to endorse President Joe Biden in June, publishing a letter signed by 16 Nobel laureates. That came just two days before the fateful presidential debate that ultimately derailed the president's reelection bid.

Three Democratic senators are asking McDonald’s about its menu price hikes in recent years, arguing that the increases are higher than they should be — even with inflation and rising operating costs. McDonald’s prices have raised eyebrows. It also asked whether McDonald’s executives received bonuses or other incentive-based compensation from 2020 to 2024 and whether any incentives were based on executives’ ability to increase per-customer profits. Japanese American leaders slammed former President Donald Trump after he compared Jan. 6 rioters to those of Japanese descent who were incarcerated during World War II just because of their race. “Nobody’s ever — maybe the Japanese during the Second World War, frankly. But you know, they were held too.”Several Japanese American leaders condemned Trump’s comments, with Ann Burroughs, president and CEO of the Japanese American National Museum, calling them an “egregiously inaccurate and flawed historical analogy.”“Now more than ever, the lessons from the Japanese American incarceration must never be forgotten, ignored, minimized, or erased,” she said in a statement on the museum’s website. One officer, who was sprayed with chemicals during the event, died a day later due to natural causes. After years of pushing, everything looks ready for Saudi Arabia’s billion-dollar move to become a major force in tennis to take off — with one major hitch. The Ministry of Sport of Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Tennis Federation (STF) and the WTA Tour then announced a three-year deal to host the tour finals. These moves raised Saudi Arabia’s tennis profile, but its potential new tournament at the start of the season was seen as the most important of its tennis investments — and its most divisive. It would cement Saudi Arabia’s place at the center of the sport, bringing with it an extensively criticized human rights record. Saudi Arabia’s moves into tennis have roiled the organisations behind the Grand Slam tournaments.

It’s the latest example of Harris’ campaign drawing sharper distinctions with Trump in the presidential race’s closing weeks, using the former president’s own words and those of his former aides to cast him as dangerous and unstable. In Erie on Monday, Harris will highlight Trump’s comments Sunday on Fox News, when he said he isn’t worried about his supporters’ actions on Election Day. Harris on Monday plans to warn that Trump’s actions could put people’s freedom at risk. Harris’ campaign will also release a new ad, dubbed “Enemy Within,” which features Trump repeatedly invoking the phrase “the enemy from within” on the campaign trail. “The enemy within are people that Kamala Harris let into this country, unvetted, unchecked and undocumented.”During her event Monday, Harris also plans to show attendees in Erie what Trump rallies are like, the aide said.
