Trump has said that undocumented immigrants share the blame for America’s once-in-a-generation home affordability crisis, but the president-elect’s deportation plans may backfire, driving up the cost of homebuying even further. There is a need for more construction workers, as well: There were 282,000 construction jobs open as of September, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. “Immigrant labor is really important for our ability to continue to build homes affordably,” said Tobin. More than one-third of construction workers in the labor force are foreign-born, according to the US Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey. In some states, that share is much higher: In California, New Jersey and Texas, more than half of construction workers are immigrants.

Tech jobs are mired in a recession

But ask white-collar professionals who are actually looking for a job, and they'll tell you horror stories that are eerily similar to Bach's. As I wrote last spring, that's because the job market has essentially split into two distinct tiers. AdvertisementNow, new data from LinkedIn — which tracked how often its users landed new jobs — shows which white-collar jobs are being hit the hardest. AdvertisementAnother reason tech companies are hiring fewer professionals is that their existing employees are opting to stay put. "We're slowly, slowly recovering," says Art Zeile, the CEO of Dice, a tech job board.

AdvertisementAfter receiving my Ph.D. in sociology, I launched my career in policy development and speech writing. In 2021, both my oldest and youngest kids got complex medical diagnoses. My youngest child's care is a 24/7 job, and even with cutting-edge technology to help manage his medical needs, my sleep, mental focus, and self-care time have been permanently disrupted. In between, I am in our bright and airy kitchen, cooking multiple times a day for the many special diets in our family. But none of this would be possible if I was working at another job five days a week.

The new Alexa aims to be a personalized assistant, handling diverse tasks across different devices. Amazon's AI-powered Alexa upgrade could launch with several major partners handling specific tasks such as ride-hailing, grocery shopping, and restaurant reservations, Business Insider has learned. The partner companies would become the primary option for handling those specific tasks on the upgraded Alexa. Amazon is revamping Alexa with ChatGPT-like AI features, BI first reported in January. Internally codenamed Banyan or Remarkable Alexa, the upgrade has the potential to significantly improve the voice assistant with AI features.

Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the job application process, simplifying some aspects — and creating new potential frictions in others. As the use of AI in hiring and applying increases, many job seekers are having to go to extra lengths to stand out. Using the tools, job seekers can save hundreds of hours — and apply to up to thousands of jobs a day, according to the services. A premium membership starts at $38 a month, according to the website — a cost AI Apply notes is much lower and more accessible than the cost of a career counselor. But job seekers are not the only party using AI in the application process, according to a recent University of Washington study.

After 30 years in business, Amazon is a $2 trillion behemoth and one of the world's largest retailers. Some critics believed Amazon was doomed to never recover, but founder Jeff Bezos turned things around — with some helpful advice from Jim Sinegal, founder of rival retailer Costco. Bezos credited the rebound to lower prices and promised to eliminate unnecessary costs in order to make more discounts possible, the Times reported — a similar strategy to Costco's. In a move that’s perhaps more symbolic than business-minded, Barnes & Noble, America’s largest retail bookseller, has reclaimed the flagship store it vacated in 2013. But Barnes & Noble would revamp its business model. “The problem with Barnes & Noble when I took it over was that the bookstores themselves weren’t very good,” Daunt told CNN. Foot traffic data for Barnes & Noble show that visits are up by 7% since 2019, according to location analytics company Placer.ai. Shannon DeVito, head of books at Barnes & Noble, says that beyond reigniting a love for reading, the BookTok trend has guided stores on what to stock.

Yet they also owe $40,000 in credit card debt, they told self-made millionaire and money expert Ramit Sethi on a recent episode of his "Money for Couples" podcast. Even high earners can find themselves under a mountain of credit card debt if they let their spending go unchecked. Then, they can institute a standard operating procedure with rules, such as putting cash windfalls toward their credit card debt or discussing purchases over a certain price.

Why the C-suite is getting so big

Beyond the usual top jobs, some organizations now have chief experience officers, chief AI-ethics officers, and chief transformation officers. LinkedIn said in September that those were the fastest-growing C-suite roles on its platform from 2022 to 2023. Janet SherlockBut she said a lineup that includes a chief marketing officer, a chief information officer, and a chief customer-experience officer might indicate insufficient internal coordination. "Do I need a customer-experience officer whenever I have a chief commercial officer, a chief information officer, and a chief marketing officer?"
