Early reviews of iOS 18 beta suggest Apple Intelligence may not make a big splash in 2024. Analysts say it'll have to deliver on the AI front if it wants to stay on top. Go to newsletter preferences Thanks for signing up! AdvertisementA souped-up Siri and email summaries might not be enough to put Apple ahead in the AI arms race. Early reviews of iOS 18 beta are in, and it sounds like Apple Intelligence might not wow consumers when it's released to the public later this year.

Earlier this week, another product contending for the future of AI companionship made its debut: an eavesdropping necklace called Friend. AdvertisementSchiffmann's original vision for an AI hardware device was a pendant that would act as a more standard-fare AI assistant called Tab — he once described it as a "wearable mom." Of the many AI hardware devices that launched in recent months, such as Humane's AI pin, Meta's smart glasses, and Rabbit's AI-powered R1, Friend is the most personal contender. In fact, on the day Friend launched, a competing AI hardware founder named Nik Shevchenko released a diss track — as any self-respecting 23-year-old AI hardware founder would do — insinuating that Schiffmann stole his idea. (It would not be the first time that Shevchenko built an open source competitor that closely resembled another AI hardware device.

New York CNN —OpenAI stunned users when it demonstrated an updated voice mode for the most advanced version of ChatGPT earlier this year. Far from the kind of robotic voice that people have come to associate with digital assistants like Alexa or Siri, the ChatGPT advanced voice mode sounds remarkably lifelike. Starting on Tuesday, advanced voice mode — which works with the most powerful version of the chatbot, ChatGPT-4o — will begin rolling out to paid users. Advanced voice mode will start rolling out to a small group of subscribers to the app’s “Plus” mode, with the aim of making it available to all Plus users in the fall. ChatGPT does have a less sophisticated voice mode already.

Apple on Monday released the first version of Apple Intelligence, its suite of artificial intelligence features that will improve Siri, automatically generate emails and images and sort notifications. The new software called Apple Intelligence was released in the developer beta of iOS 18.1. Apple Intelligence is an important initiative for Apple. Investors hope the tight integration of AI with Apple's operating system can spur a big wave of upgrades in the coming years, especially since the system will only work on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and newer. "We expect this iPhone cycle to remain strong for longer as AI feature sets (software and possibly hardware) improve in the 2025 iPhone," Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan wrote in a note on Monday.

Apple 's new artificial intelligence features will roll out in October, missing the initial launch of iPhone and iPad software updates, according to a Bloomberg report published Monday. The company split the Apple Intelligence features from the initial iOS launch due to concerns over their stability and need to run tests on a wider scale, the report said. Some of the promised Apple Intelligence features, such as ChatGPT integration and Siri improvements, are expected to be released later in the year. Apple plans to give developers early access to Apple Intelligence as soon as this week in the iOS 18.1 beta version, Bloomberg said. The company first announced Apple Intelligence on June 10.
