A pair of shoes is pictured in a window of a Birkenstock footwear store in Berlin, Germany, January 21, 2021. Birkenstock is the latest high-profile listing to put investor focus on the initial public offering (IPO) market, which is gradually reopening after two relatively quiet years and a burst of activity in September. Due to recent price hikes, worldwide footwear sales are expected to rise just 2.9% over 2022, according to market research firm Euromonitor International. AllBirds (BIRD.O), Dr Martens (DOCS.L), and On Running (ONON.N) have all seen their market value fall since their IPOs in 2021. "When you look at the trend of other shoe companies that have IPO-ed, it doesn't give a great outlook for Birkenstock," Valechha said.

Trump gets kicked off Forbes 400 list of richest Americans
  + stars: | 2023-10-04 | by ( Matt Egan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
New York CNN Business —As Donald Trump scrambles to defend his business empire in court, the former president has suffered another blow: dropping off The Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans. Unlike the steady or growing fortunes of Forbes 400 leaders Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Larry Ellison, Trump’s net worth took a double-digit hit. Trump launched Truth Social in February 2022, envisioning it as a credible threat to Facebook and Twitter. Trump was previously booted from The Forbes 400 in 2021 and in 1990 when he faced severe financial stress. As Forbes notes, Trump “lied” to the magazine in a successful effort to make the Forbes 400.

"Demand was far exceeding the supply of GPU capacity that the whole ecosystem could produce," Scott told the Verge's Nilay Patel. Microsoft, like Google and other tech companies, has been quickly adding generative AI to its own products and selling the technology's capabilities to clients. Training and deploying the underlying AI models has mainly relied on Nvidia's GPUs, creating scarcity of supply. Nvidia expects to increase supply each quarter through next year, finance chief Colette Kress told analysts on last month's earnings call. Meta's Threads real-time messaging app is struggling to attract new users like it did during its blockbuster July debut. Insider Intelligence said it expects Threads to have 23.7 million U.S. users in 2023, far behind Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, which have 177.9 million, 135.2 million and 102.3 million users, respectively. When Threads debuted, it rapidly gained millions of users due in part to its easy sign-up process for existing Instagram users. "Threads received an initial boost from Twitter's missteps, but it can't rely on X defectors to continue to grow," Insider Intelligence principal analyst Jasmine Enberg said in a statement. "Assuming Musk doesn't backtrack, the move will likely alienate more X users and potentially increase advertiser interest in Threads," Enberg added.

By comparison, its closest mainstream cousin, the Google-owned video service YouTube, has billions of monthly logged-in users, a spokesperson said. In an emailed response, they said the leaderboard rankings are generated from the most liked recent videos on the site. However, YouTube, unlike Rumble, has said it will continue to remove content that tries to deceive voters in the 2024 elections. The RNC said it was taken down to direct users to the debate livestream and avoid confusing viewers with multiple videos. Other comments on his recent videos told Trump to “execute” Democrats and suggested that someone should “build a lot of gallows.”Rumble said it removed those comments in response to AP's inquiry.

In March, Google released an artificial intelligence chatbot called Bard. It was Google’s answer to OpenAI’s hugely popular ChatGPT. Within weeks, Google revamped the tool with upgraded technology, but ChatGPT continued to be the chatbot that captured the public’s attention. On Tuesday, Google unveiled a plan to leapfrog ChatGPT by connecting Bard to its most popular consumer services, such as Gmail, Docs and YouTube. Though Bard has not received as much attention as ChatGPT, Google’s A.I.

When the summer began, ChatGPT traffic suddenly fell. One hypothesis stood out: Millions of students went on summer break, so they didn't need ChatGPT to cheat — er, I mean research. Back when summer began, online search interest in Minecraft jumped, while ChatGPT interest declined. Mark Shmulik, a top internet analyst at Bernstein, made this point at the start of the summer, when usage fell. "This idea that if the ChatGPT drop-off is due to students on summer break, that implies a narrower audience and fewer use cases."

As it seeks to gain ground in the fast-moving AI space, Google is rolling out Bard Extensions, enabling users to import their data from other Google products. For instance, users could ask Bard to search their files in Google Drive or provide a summary of the user’s Gmail inbox. For now, Bard users will only be able to pull information in from Google apps, but Google is working with external companies to connect their applications into Bard in the future, Google senior product director Jack Krawczyk said. Another new feature in Bard seeks to alleviate a nagging problem for generative AI: inaccurate responses known as “hallucinations”. Bard users will be able to see which parts of Bard’s answers differ from and agree with Google search results.

Now, many news outlets are seeing an increase in downloads and usage of their apps. Meta's decision to block user access to news in Canada is not having an entirely negative effect on the country's major publishers. The Globe and Mail in August saw a 98% increase in app downloads and a 27% increase in daily users; CTV News saw a 157% increase in app downloads and an 83% increase in daily usage; La Presse saw a 32% increase in app downloads and an 8% increase in usage; and The National Post's downloads were up almost 10%, with daily usage up 3%. Meanwhile, CBC News saw downloads and daily usage remain relatively flat.
