Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke wrote a company-wide memo Wednesday discouraging employees from having side hustles. "This surprises me because it directly contradicts the countless times I've said Shopify is like a professional sports team that requires our unshared attention." The Vault is a set of internal web pages where Shopify employees can access information about company policies. "He was someone who could devote his full attention and time to that quest," Finkelstein wrote. Lütke said Wednesday that employees should start their own Shopify stores because it helps them to stay familiar with the platform.

Robert Klane, a comic novelist, screenwriter and filmmaker with a taste for gleeful vulgarity who wrote the screenplay for “Weekend at Bernie's,” the 1989 cult film about two young insurance company employees who create the illusion that their murdered boss is still alive, died on Aug. 29 at his home in Woodland Hills, Calif. His son Jon said the cause was kidney failure. Mr. Klane wrote “Weekend at Bernie’s” more than two decades into a career that began with the publication of two humorous novels: “The Horse Is Dead: A Tasteless Novel” (1968) and “Where’s Poppa?” (1970). He adapted “Where’s Poppa?” into the screenplay for a twisted comedy about a single lawyer (played by George Segal) who dreams of scaring to death or institutionalizing his aged, maddening mother (Ruth Gordon). Ted Kotcheff, who directed “Weekend at Bernie’s,” wrote in his 2017 memoir, “Director’s Cut: My Life in Film,” that Mr. Klane had been inspired to write it by his time as an advertising copywriter in the 1960s, when the top executives at one of the agencies where he worked invited employees to their beach houses on Long Island.

Cancer changed my macho views on accepting help
  + stars: | 2023-09-19 | by ( Andy Segal | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
I assumed I could fight cancer on my ownI’m not wired to cry, and it’s not just because I’m a man. Drawing on my lineage as I faced cancer, I didn’t think I was one of those weaklings who would need help. Friends who had battled cancer offered advice, grocery shopping, respite care and rides to doctor appointments. There was no cancer in the 34 lymph nodes that were removed, which means there is little chance it spread. Even so, in case there are undetectable stray cancer cells, I will undergo five more chemotherapy sessions.

“The Supreme Court and the government alike possess a credible nuclear threat against the other side … if both sides are rational actors, they will … disarm themselves. That leaves the Supreme Court as the only check on the executive and legislative branches of government. Striking down a Basic Law would be uncharted territory for the Supreme Court, although it has examined and commented on Basic Laws before. Thousands of military reservists and even some active duty soldiers have vowed not to serve if the judicial overhaul went into effect. Or for the Supreme Court that might say we have a right to demonstrate, the right to strike by our so to speak legal system,” Tomer said.

Jamila Woods’s Songs Have Many Loves
  + stars: | 2023-09-11 | by ( Lindsay Zoladz | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
Most people first heard Woods’s voice — warm, heartfelt and sincere — when she was featured on gospel-tinged tracks by Chance the Rapper (“Blessings”) and Segal (“Sunday Candy”). Each song took the name of a different pioneer: “Zora,” “Miles,” “Octavia.”That’s not to say there wasn’t any Jamila in them. “With ‘Legacy!,’ there’s a lot of songs where I was actually writing a lot about myself, but I’m like, ‘I’ll call it ‘Sonia!’” she said and laughed. “Water Made Us,” which she considers her most personal and vulnerable album to date, found her “shedding” armor. I don’t need to put that layer on top of it anymore.”“Water Made Us” is all about Woods’s own search for love.

Elon Musk and then-Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal got dinner together in March 2022. Musk came away from the meeting describing Agrawal as a nice guy, but not the "fire-breathing dragon" Twitter needed. After the meeting, Musk said Agrawal was a "really nice guy." Messages between Musk and Agrawal were released in September 2022 as part of a lawsuit Twitter filed against Musk in July 2022. "Great dinner :)," Musk responded.

A fit and ruddy 19-year-old with blond hair and a sheepish smile, James Henderson is tanning on a beach in Magaluf, a town on the Spanish island Mallorca that has long been the destination of choice for young Britons in search of a boozy holiday in the sun. Asked to recount the revelry of the day before, he grins like a man who has just completed a decathlon and is pretty psyched about his performance. There was a few hours of “pre-drinking,” as he put it, at his hotel, then on to Punta Ballena, a crammed and gritty strip of pubs, tattoo parlors and lap dance emporiums that bursts with action until dawn every summer day. By the time he and his vacation buddy headed to bed, at 3 a.m., they had each knocked back roughly 20 drinks over the course of 15 hours. There are also G-rated home comforts, like kebab shops, Yorkshire pudding and pubs, all at strikingly affordable prices.

Revenue from beekeeping will reach $624 billion this year in the United States alone, reports IBISWorld, a market research firm. While techniques for nurturing hives have improved, honey bees remain vulnerable animals. As of a few years ago, nearly 30 percent of commercial honey bees still did not survive the winter months, says the Environmental Protection Agency. That’s a large number and one that puts a financial strain on commercial beekeepers. There are more than 20,000 species of wild bees in the world, and many people don’t realize they exist.

Now that the national emergency is no longer in effect, many are wondering if their insurance will cover the latest booster shots. Will insurance cover the newest Covid booster? If you get your vaccines at your local pharmacy, consider asking a pharmacist at the location if your insurance covers Covid boosters, she adds. If you don't have insurance or your provider isn't covering the cost of your vaccine, booster shots should also be available for free through local public health authorities, Patel adds. What else should you know about the 'Eris' Covid variant?

Arthur Dantchik, the American multibillionaire who provided millions to the think tank behind Israel’s highly polarizing judicial overhaul plan, announced on Friday that he would no longer donate to the organization. Mr. Dantchik, 65, said in a statement that he would part ways with the Kohelet Policy Forum, which conceived a series of measures to transform Israel’s judicial system. “When a society becomes dangerously fragmented, people must come together to preserve democracy,” Mr. Dantchik said in the statement, posted to Calcalist, an Israeli news site. “I stopped donating to think tanks in Israel, including the Kohelet Policy Forum. A spokesman for Mr. Dantchik said he would have no further comment.

Lawmakers, including Yariv Levin, the Justice Minister, and Itamar Ben-Gvir, the Minister of National Security, at the Knesset in Jerusalem after the vote on Monday. Israel’s nationalist right celebrated a hard-won victory Monday after seven months of struggling to advance the contentious plan to weaken Israel’s judiciary in the face of mounting opposition. Many on Israel’s right say Israel’s Supreme Court is staffed by activist judges who have tied the hands of elected leaders. Right-wing voters commonly say they “vote for the right and get the left” and blame the courts for striking down popular policies. A weakened court would allow Mr. Ben-Gvir to fulfill such campaign promises, he said.

The science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke wrote that “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic,” and today magic and technology are merging. He still prefers nondigital methods, though, which he attributes in no small part to the influence of Mr. Geller. Mr. Money-Coutts first met Mr. Geller in 2003. A student at the British prep school Eton who was a budding magician, he invited Mr. Geller to perform for 700 gobsmacked schoolboys. Mr. Geller had relocated to Britain by then, having spent 12 tumultuous years in the United States, most of them in New York City.

It is the kind of historical artifact that would be easy to miss: an old and fragile little book unearthed in the archives of the Derbyshire Record Office, in the East Midlands of England. The book, a commercial ledger from 1822, holds the names of enslavers who ran cotton plantations on islands along the coast of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. The Taylor in question was none other than John Edward Taylor, founder of The Manchester Guardian, now known simply as The Guardian, the most prominent progressive newspaper in Britain for more than two centuries. “In that moment, what I realized is that we can now connect the founder of The Guardian to the enslaved people of the Sea Islands,” Ms. Gooptar said in a recent call from Trinidad, where she grew up. “It proved that he was importing cotton, picked by slaves, for profits.”

Executives repeatedly promised employees the bonuses would be paid out, the suit alleged. This time the lawsuit is a class-action filed by Mark Schobinger on behalf of himself and other current and former Twitter employees. The lawsuit alleged employees were not paid a proportion of their 2022 bonuses, despite repeated promises from top executives. In a statement shared with AP an attorney for the plaintiffs, Shannon Liss-Riordan said the bonuses Twitter owed amounted to "tens of millions of dollars." One former executive said, however, that he and other Twitter employees had been harassed over the release of the files.

— Vincent Canby1972: FILMBecause both Miss [Vanessa] Redgrave and Miss Jackson possess identifiable intelligence, “Mary, Queen of Scots” is not as difficult to sit through as some bad movies I can think of. It’s just solemn, well-groomed and dumb. — Vincent Canby1973: FilmMelvin Frank’s “A Touch of Class” is a very patchy movie — enormously funny in bits and pieces and sometimes downright dumb. There are also some fine farcical scenes more or less dedicated to the proposition that maintenance of a love nest is, at best, full of peril. — Janet Maslin1980: FILMMy only reservation is that Miss Jackson isn’t on the screen enough.

Jerusalem CNN —Thousands of Israelis waving Star of David flags streamed into the Old City of Jerusalem Thursday, as part of a contentious march taking place at a time of high tensions in the region. She will warn about "the global impact of this standoff and highlight the need to avoid default," a senior Treasury official said. It will lead to a freeze in global financial markets," said Muehleisen, now a fellow with the Atlantic Council. G7 counterparts will question Yellen "about the financial stability risks in the U.S., the regional banks' exposure to commercial real estate. Real risks that are not manufactured for political posturing," said Stephanie Segal, a former U.S. Treasury official who is a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. The far more complicated "Pillar 1" plan to allow countries to tax global technology giants and other highly profitable corporations on their local sales is still under negotiation.
But Finklestein also had another side business on his mind last week in an interview that had been pre-taped for CNBC's Small Business Playbook event, the loose-leaf tea side hustle, Firebelly Tea, that he co-founded as an independent entrepreneur. Finkelstein said it will be cheaper and also likely a more effective way to grow a new business. The creator economy is changing the way business success is generated, Finkelstein said, with the old "Field of Dreams" model — "If you build, it, they will come" — no longer enough. But that does not mean every small business owner with a great product should be chasing MrBeast or Emma Chamberlain for product endorsements. He cited the TikTok hashtag "TikTok Made Me Buy It" which has 50 billion impressions.
The internet was soon awash with theories about how Niemann might have secreted a radio device on his body. In a postgame interview at the Cup, Niemann offered to play naked, in a radio signal-proofed room, to prove he was playing clean. He also said emphatically that he had never cheated during an over-the-board game, as in-person chess is known. Many in the chess world did not believe him. Viswanathan Anand, a five-time world champion, put it this way: “I thought Carlsen literally cracked at the end.”
Mr. Kalnoky, who is tall, urbane and fluent in five languages, was raised in exile in Paris, where his family resided after Communists took over Romania. As a count from Transylvania, he would like to cordially invite everyone to spare him the Dracula jokes. The story of how King Charles came to own a guesthouse in Romania starts with one of Mr. Kalnoky’s ancestors. That factory has long since vanished from what is today the right-next-door village of Zalánpatak, population 94. “As he was describing his dream house, I realized that I might know that very house,” he recalled.

It found that marriage and childbirth decreased their productivity and sometimes even dissuaded them from continuing their careers. It led her to mentor women in the field through the advocacy group Graduate Women in Science. Reed wrote that it was a testimony to the strengths of these women that they pursued science despite the fact that they were “often denied entry to colleges and unable to attain professional status.”
CORK, Ireland — For decades, the story of Limerick hurling was a tale of failure so filled with off-field drama and on-field defeat that it verged on farce. And it was a farce played out on the country’s grandest, most public stage. The conclusion looked so foregone that Limerick fans left their seats and headed toward the field, anticipating pandemonium. Offaly scored 7 points in a frenzy. Limerick won a single All-Ireland title in 1973, after a decades-long drought, and then didn’t win again for more than 40 years.
Twitter's former CEO, CFO, and chief legal officer are suing Twitter for over $1 million. They claim they had agreements with the company that it would reimburse any legal fees they incurred. The company took two months to acknowledge their demands and still won't pay, the suit alleges. The suit claims the two ex-execs racked up legal fees to deal with these cases and comply with various demands. The trio's action against Twitter follows several others alleging that the company has failed to pay bills since Musk took over the company last October.
