CNN —Australia striker Sam Kerr, who is the face of this Women’s World Cup, will miss the opening two matches of the tournament after sustaining a calf injury in training. One of the world’s best players, Kerr’s absence is a huge blow to the Matildas who played the Republic of Ireland in their opening World Cup game on Thursday. Kerr racked up five goals in four matches at the 2019 World Cup, including four goals against Jamaica in the group stage. The 2023 edition represents her fourth World Cup, having debuted at the showpiece event in Germany in 2011 as a 17-year-old. Manchester City striker Mary Fowler, who scored the winner in a friendly against France last week, started in Kerr’s place.

Short video app TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, said on Thursday it would invest billions of dollars in Southeast Asia over the next few years, as it doubles down on the region amid intensifying global scrutiny over its data security. TikTok did not provide a detailed breakdown of the spending plan but said it would invest in training, advertising and supporting small vendors looking to join its e-commerce platform TikTok Shop. TikTok has 8,000 employees in Southeast Asia and 2 million small vendors selling their wares on its platform in Indonesia, the region’s biggest economy, he added. E-commerce transactions across the region reached nearly $100 billion last year, with Indonesia accounting for $52 billion, according to data from consultancy Momentum Works. The app has not faced major bans on government devices in Southeast Asia, but it has been under scrutiny over its content.

CNN —Deep ocean water in the Antarctic is heating up and shrinking, with potentially far-reaching consequences for climate change and deep ocean ecosystems, according to a report. They also found that ocean waters deeper than 2,000 meters (6,600 feet) have warmed four times faster than the rest of the global ocean. They are a vital part of global ocean circulation, transporting human-caused carbon pollution into the deep ocean where it remains for centuries, said Silvano. If this deep circulation weakens, “less carbon can be absorbed by the deep ocean, limiting the ability of the ocean to mitigate global warming,” Silvano told CNN. This cold, dense water also has a vital role in supplying oxygen to deep ocean waters.

Supreme Court gifts Big Tech best kind of boring

WASHINGTON, May 19 (Reuters Breakingviews) - American tech giants have two new things to celebrate, and one less thing to worry about. The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously protected Twitter from being sued for militant-group content on its platform. Together, the rulings reinforce internet platforms’ legal shield and kick a regulatory crackdown further down the road. With the Supreme Court siding in their favor, Big Tech can breathe a sigh of relief. The Supreme Court ruling leaves that debate stuck in Congress, exactly where tech giants want it.

For two years, Mr. Joko served as the governor of a capital city that seemed to teeter on the brink of ruin. Most of all, Jakarta was sinking, as thirsty residents drained its marshy aquifers and rising sea waters lapped its shores. So Mr. Joko rolled up his sleeves, put on his sneakers and set about trying to fix the city. All the Sisyphean dredging, the endless concrete inches slathered on sea walls, the duct tape solutions could not raise Jakarta above the sea’s reach. And so Mr. Joko has turned to a different solution: If Jakarta cannot be saved, he will need to start over.

LONDON, May 19 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is taking a small step in the right direction. After much hesitation, Britain announced on Friday it would invest 1 billion pounds in its domestic semiconductor industry, with a focus on chip designs. Britain plays a relatively insignificant role in chip manufacturing, which is dominated by Taiwanese giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) (2330.TW). With over 110 semiconductor design firms, Britain can probably claim to be Europe’s leader in the segment. Under Sunak’s plan, Britain will invest 200 million pounds by 2025, with the full 1 billion pounds achieved over the next decade.

HONG KONG, May 18 (Reuters Breakingviews) - A long-awaited Sony (6758.T) spinoff is finally happening. The Japanese video games-to-semiconductors conglomerate may list its financial subsidiary "within the next two to three years" while retaining a 20% stake. Investors promptly bid up shares of Sony as much as 7% on the news. Partially offloading Sony Financial Services, which the company only took full control of in 2020 for $3.7 billion, makes sense. Sony stresses it is not planning any other spinoffs for now - one of them is plenty to look forward to.

LONDON, May 18 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Trumpeting massive job cuts is usually one way to boost a share price. The 14 billion pound telco said on Thursday it would shed 55,000 jobs over the next seven years, but shares slumped 8%. That will stretch the patience of Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE) and Patrick Drahi’s Altice, which collectively control 30% of the UK group. The catch for Drahi and Höttges is that it’s not obvious what they should demand to reinvigorate BT’s share price. Still, if the two bigwigs decide to join forces, BT’s job cuts may yet move up to the company’s C-suite.

Mediobanca (MDBI.MI), the 8.5-billion-euro financial group run by veteran CEO Alberto Nagel, said on Thursday it had agreed to buy London-based Arma Partners, an advisory boutique that specializes in technology deals. With revenue in excess of $100 million, or about 90 million euros, Arma should add more than 10% to Mediobanca’s annual net fees and commission of 850 million euros. The French boutique’s contribution, although a record, stood at 63 million euros in the financial year that ended in June 2022. Buying Arma allows Mediobanca to gain expertise in growing areas like cloud services, software and cybersecurity, which are outside the Italian bank’s core strengths. Star banker Erik Maris left Mediobanca a year after Nagel clinched the purchase of a 66% stake in the boutique.

Photo: Ariel Zambelich/The Wall Street JournalA former employee of NFT marketplace OpenSea was found guilty Wednesday of what federal prosecutors described as the first insider-trading case involving digital tokens, marking a win for the Justice Department in its push to police the crypto industry. A federal jury in New York convicted Nathaniel Chastain of wire fraud and money laundering for using nonpublic information from his employer to trade on nonfungible tokens in 2021. The Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office charged Mr. Chastain in 2022, accusing him of purchasing the NFTs ahead of OpenSea’s featuring them on its home page. Once the NFTs spiked in value after being featured, Mr. Chastain sold them, pocketing tens of thousands of dollars in profit, prosecutors said.

In an age of persistent and often painful inequality, the need for institutions like Guardian Angel has never been greater.
CNN —“We’re all in – 100%,” US billionaire businessman Todd Boehly told Chelsea fans upon his arrival at the club in May 2022. Chelsea crashed out of the Champions League after losing to Real Madrid 4-0 on aggregate. Following the loss against Real Madrid, Chelsea captain Thiago Silva spoke candidly to reporters on the issues that come with this kind of spending. Besides Kai Havertz and Marc Cucurella, no Chelsea outfield player has started more than 20 games in the Premier League this season. The Blues are on course to have their lowest scoring season in Premier League history with their current total of 30 goals.
On the day Chelsea unveiled Graham Potter as its new head coach last September, the club went to great lengths to show it was heading in a new direction. The days of short-term spending and disposable managers were gone, along with Chelsea’s former owner, the Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich . Under its new ownership group, led by the American investor and Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly, the club was going to build something for the future with what it called “one of the most exciting coaches in the game.” At 47, Potter was young, proven in the Premier League, and above all, the club said, “an innovator.”

BENGALURU, March 8 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Singapore technology giant Sea (SE.N) on Tuesday reported its first ever quarterly profit, beating regional tech firms like GoTo (GOTO.JK) and Grab (GRAB.O) to the punch. The almost $1 billion swing from a fourth-quarter loss in 2021 to a $423 million profit in the final three months of last year is largely down to cost cuts. The company run by Forrest Li slashed sales and marketing expenses alone by $745 million, a whopping 62% drop. Whether that’s sustainable is unclear, though Li pointed out that the company had sold, closed or downsized a number of non-core operations and investments. It’s a welcome sign that upstart tech companies don’t always have to sacrifice profitability for growth.

Los Angeles CNN —Donald Trump’s entrance into the NFT world came at the worst possible moment. It bears noting, however, that despite the bad timing Trump’s NFT collection has shot to the top of NFT marketplace OpenSea’s ranking and has raked in more than $1.4 million since its launch. On the Trump Digital Trading Cards website, the Trump collection claims to be “sold out” and the floor price for a single card has risen to $177.99, according to analytics site CoinGecko. SPACs boomed in 2020 with celebrities and investors piling in, but rising interest rates and a troubled stock market has led to a dramatic fall in SPAC value.
