As he prepares to take the reins as Macy’s chief executive on Sunday, Tony Spring has a tall order: He must contend with the existential crisis that mall-based department stores are facing to try to stay relevant in an increasingly e-commerce world. In December, an investor group submitted a bid that would take Macy’s private at a value of $5.8 billion. Mr. Spring, 58, has spent his career at Macy’s high-end store group, Bloomingdale’s. He started as an executive trainee in 1987 and rose through the ranks to become chief executive in 2014. He turned the chain into a “scrappy incubator” for ideas that were eventually brought over to Macy’s stores.

The possibility of such a shake-up raises questions about who would replace Zaluzhny, nicknamed the "Iron General," as well as what Zelenskyy's goals are for Ukraine's war effort in 2024. A senior official familiar with the conversation confirmed to The Washington Post that the Ukrainian president told Zaluzhny he was being removed on Monday. The Obie Awards, a scrappy but venerable annual competition honoring the best theater staged Off and Off Off Broadway, has chosen “Dark Disabled Stories,” Ryan J. Haddad’s autobiographical work inspired by his experiences navigating the city with cerebral palsy, as the best new American play. The prize was announced on Saturday night, both by news release and on Spectrum News NY1, as the American Theater Wing, which presents the Obies, decided to forgo a costly ceremony — in most nonpandemic years, the Obies have been handed out at a boozy and often boisterous party — and instead to give grants of $1,000 to $5,000 directly to the winning artists and arts institutions. “These are unprecedented times, and it’s extremely challenging for theater right now, so we absolutely want to celebrate the achievements of Off and Off Off Broadway, but in doing so we want to have the most impact by putting money directly in the pockets of the artists and the companies making the work,” said Heather A. Hitchens, the Wing’s president and chief executive. “Everybody likes a party, and maybe some day it will make sense to do that again, but we’re not made of money — we’re a nonprofit, so how can we use our resources to be the greatest force for good right now?”The Obies, created by the Village Voice in the mid 1950s, have been in flux for years as the Voice foundered and the pandemic battered the theater industry. The Wing, with a board led by artists, has kept the Obies afloat with a combination of in-person and streaming ceremonies.

In rousing remarks, Ms. Haley painted a picture of a country and a world in disarray, casting herself as the choice for voters dissatisfied with both President Biden and Mr. Trump. She set up an epic showdown with Mr. Trump in South Carolina, where she is lagging far behind Mr. Trump in polls despite a home-state advantage. Painting herself as an outsider, despite her insider résumé, she pledged to take on Mr. Trump and the political class behind him. Her campaign has bought over $1 million in television advertising from Tuesday through Feb. 6 in South Carolina, according to AdImpact, a media-tracking firm. “I won South Carolina twice as governor,” she told reporters Friday at a retro diner in Amherst.

For years, the scrappy Iran-backed Yemeni rebels known as the Houthis did such a good job of bedeviling American partners in the Middle East that Pentagon war planners started copying some of their tactics. Noting that the Houthis had managed to weaponize commercial radar systems that are commonly available in boating stores and make them more portable, a senior U.S. commander challenged his Marines to figure out something similar. By September 2022, Marines in the Baltic Sea were adapting Houthi-inspired mobile radar systems. So senior Pentagon officials knew as soon as the Houthis started attacking ships in the Red Sea that they would be hard to tame. As the Biden administration approaches its third week of airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, the Pentagon is trying to thread an impossibly tiny needle: making a dent in the Houthis’ ability to hit commercial and Navy vessels without dragging the United States into a prolonged war.

New York CNN —Mark Thompson, on his 100th day as CNN’s new leader, sent his 4,000-person strong workforce a 2,300-word memo that said both a lot and very little at the same time. Thompson began his manifesto by referencing how CNN’s founder, Ted Turner, revolutionized the news by introducing a 24/7 live-feed on cable television. That group, colloquially known internally as “The Quad,” is comprised of Virginia Moseley, executive vice president of editorial; Amy Entelis, executive vice president of talent; Eric Sherling, executive vice president of programming; and David Leavy, chief operating officer. Mike McCarthy, who has for years led CNN International, will become managing editor of CNN, reporting to Moseley, Thompson said. “Change is essential if we’re to secure this great news company’s future,” Thompson wrote.

NEW YORK (AP) — CNN's new chief executive says the company needs to recapture the “swagger and innovation” of its early days — and that, he says, increasingly means embracing a future outside of television. Mark Thompson, appointed CNN's chief executive last fall after stints at The New York Times and BBC, outlined a strategy to his staff Wednesday that included a corporate restructuring but few external specifics on how that transformation will take place. In the past, CNN hasn't always “gone the extra mile to squeeze every bit of value from the outstanding news and other intellectual property we create,” he wrote. “No longer.”He said the CNN.com website needs “drastic modernization.” The network also needs multiple digital projects to complement the CNN Max streaming service, he said. Thompson said CNN's television personalities must find multiplatform audiences, and praised Anderson Cooper's “All There Is” podcast about grief.

Every morning, Ishfaaq Ahmad Malik, a ski instructor in Indian-controlled Kashmir, opens his bedroom window and, like many others in the region, wonders: Where is the snow? “This has never happened before in January. Not in my lifetime,” said Mr. Malik, 65. “Definitely not in Gulmarg.”Each winter, Gulmarg, one of Asia’s largest and highest ski resort towns, attracts thousands of skiers, many from as far away as Europe and the Americas, drawn by perfect powder, cheap hotels and breathtaking views of the Himalayas. At 8,500 feet, this scrappy ski town’s miles of slopes are usually blanketed by snow from December to March and packed with snowboarders and skiers.

The explosions woke Ali Al-Sunaidar and his children in the middle of the night — a familiar feeling after years of war. He knew that the ancient mud-brick buildings in Yemen’s capital, Sana, could collapse under the pressure released by bombings, so he opened the windows in his home, letting in the winter air. “We were terrified and anxious,” said Mr. Al-Sunaidar, a photojournalist in Sana, after dozens of American-led airstrikes hit Yemen on Friday local time, targeting the Houthi militia that controls much of the country’s north. “We’ve been living in tension, dread and horror for the last nine years.”A day later, the United States struck again, bombing a radar facility in Yemen, U.S. officials said. For nearly a decade, Yemen has been at war, pummeled by a Saudi-led military coalition supplied with American bombs in an effort to defeat the Houthis — a once-scrappy tribal militia backed by Iran that has evolved into a de facto government in northern Yemen.

Howard Weaver, a self-described “poor kid from a shabby neighborhood,” was 24 years old and terrified when he was assigned by the floundering Anchorage Daily News to expose a rapacious chapter of the Teamsters union that was corruptly profiting from Alaska’s oil pipeline boom. “Any way you sliced it,” he recalled, “the odds were against us, a mismatch of Goliathian proportions.”But Mr. Weaver was hungry. Hungry enough that after months of investigative reporting, he and his colleagues exposed “a complex maze of political, economic and social power,” which, they wrote, “challenges at times both mighty industry and state government itself.”Three weeks before The Daily News declared that it was on the brink of bankruptcy, the scrappy newspaper with a circulation of about 13,000 was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for public service in 1976 for its reporting on Teamsters Local 959. Struggling to energize his campaign, DeSantis this week privately encouraged his donor network to support a newly formed super PAC that's taking over advertising responsibilities. The super PAC has also paid for the bulk of his TV ads and almost all of his organizing. On Aug. 8, the DeSantis campaign announced a staff shakeup, replacing its campaign manager and hiring Polyansky from the super PAC to serve as deputy campaign manager. Polyansky is an Iowa campaign veteran who has worked on several presidential campaigns in the state. DeSantis spokesman Andrew Romeo said it was “totally false” to assert that DeSantis coordinated any campaign strategy with the super PAC.

What OpenAI’s turmoil is really all about

OpenAI’s incredible upheaval — with former CEO Sam Altman caught in the middle — could have broad implications for who gets to control the future of artificial intelligence. However, Microsoft has already won the war: It is OpenAI’s most important stakeholder, with a promised $13 billion investment. In the past year, he has become the public face of the industry, and was instrumental in forging OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft, which began in 2019. Altman, sources say, wanted to move quickly, while the OpenAI board wanted to move more cautiously. Both achievements are possible, and OpenAI’s strange structure — a nonprofit overseeing a for-profit company — was designed to contain AI from destroying humanity.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is out, the company's board said late Friday. Mira Murati, OpenAI's chief technology officer, will replace Altman as the interim CEO. "A member of OpenAI's leadership team for five years, Mira has played a critical role in OpenAI's evolution into a global AI leader. Murati joined OpenAI as a researcher in 2018 when the company had just 40 to 50 employees, she told Fortune. "Our goal is to get to AGI, and we want to get there in a way that makes sure that AGI goes well for humanity," Murati told Fortune.

At its first ever developer's day conference earlier this month, OpenAI tried to tackle the situation head on by announcing Copyright Shield. That's a promise that OpenAI will pay the legal fees of its business customers in the event they're sued for something they made using its products. "We can defend our customers and pay the costs incurred if you face legal claims around copyright," said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in his keynote speech. But OpenAI rival Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI researchers and backed by billions of dollars from investors like Google and Amazon is taking a different approach. But to the extent that liability does exist, Anthropic says it's the person using the product that bears the blame.

They've seen success in using US missiles with Buk-M1 systems and HARM missiles on Soviet fighter jets. AdvertisementWith its air defenses working overtime to defend against constant Russian strikes, Ukraine is working with the US to create new capabilities by cobbling together Western and Soviet systems that weren't built to play together. Reporting earlier this year indicated Ukraine had found ways to modify the Soviet Buk air defenses to fire the RIM-7. The US and its Western allies have offered Ukraine air defenses like Patriot batteries, IRIS-T, NASAMs, and Gepard anti-aircraft guns, but Ukrainian forces continue to operate a number of Soviet air defenses, the Buk and the S-300 being among the most prominent. After Boebert won her last race by just 546 votes, she began revamping her campaign strategy. So-called ballot harvesting, which she's decried as an underhanded Democratic tactic, will be part of her campaign strategy. While campaigning in the district this election, Boebert seems “more empathetic" than her disruptive national profile.
