  + stars: | 2024-11-25 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Sadly, many individuals resort to easy-to-prepare and tasty ultra-processed foods that are loaded with salt, sugar and fats and that lack essential nutrients. Consumption of ultra-processed foods is associated with obesity, as the article points out. We know what constitutes a healthy diet that helps to enable those who consume it from becoming overweight. But the only way to match such a diet is to prepare healthy, accessible and affordable meals at home. Without more emphasis on home cooking, obesity rates will continue to soar.

The odor — along with “droplets” the cosmonauts, or Russian astronauts, said they observed — likely resulted from “outgassing from materials inside the (Russian) Progress spacecraft,” NASA said in a statement to CNN Monday afternoon. “For any detailed information on what caused the unusual odor, please contact (Russian space agency) Roscosmos,” Humphries said. AI is also ushering in an era of nuclear power, however, which is cleaner. Tech companies are investing in nuclear power plants to fuel AI data centers. Some industry leaders believe that nuclear energy might be the only reliable way to meet the demands of the AI revolution. Experts point to turnout and dissatisfaction with the economy as the driving forces behind the results. “The main story is the relatively low levels of turnout for Harris in key Democratic places compared to Biden in 2020,” Kollman said. Riverside, another California county where Asian Americans have strong representation, also flipped for the GOP in a photo-finish race decided by a few thousand votes. But while Harris’ vote count grew 21%, it was no match for Trump’s nearly 50% improvement. But in counties with the largest share of advanced degree holders, Trump actually gained votes while Harris shed them.

Dentists began giving kids fluoride treatments. About 70% of community water systems in Florida receive fluoridated water, according to the surgeon general’s release. Parents said their kids’ teeth were full of cavities despite drinking and brushing regularly with what they thought for years was fluoridated water. Adding fluoride to water systems “mitigates the impact of disparities in access to dental care,” said Jetelina, the epidemiologist. “This is one of the beauties of public health — a mainly invisible population intervention, helping the most vulnerable.”Still, the scrutiny continues.

The results of the study, published Thursday in the journal Science, surprised whale researchers because they suggest the creatures can hear at much higher frequencies than expected. Scientists had never captured baleen whales and tested their hearing before because the animals are so large it could be dangerous to both the whales and researchers. Scientists know, from recordings and other observations, that baleen whales rely on hearing for social communication and that it’s important to their survival. Minke whales were a good target for audio testing because they’re the smallest baleen whale and a species whose hearing scientists don’t understand very well. He said the Minke Whale Hearing Project is on hold, but he’d like to pursue the topic further if he could secure funding.

“It’s many, many things under one umbrella.”Although people diagnosed with autism often have similar strengths and challenges, “there are many paths to autism and many presentations of autism,” Miller said. Scientists have identified more than 100 genes related to autism, Miller said, and genes are believed to play a role in 60% to 80% of cases. “We’re making leaps and bounds about known genetic causes of autism.”Yet genes clearly don’t explain every case of autism. But only a fraction of children with the genetic mutation actually develop autism, Miller said. He notes that only 8.4% of the $419 million spent on autism research in the United States is devoted to support and services for people with autism.
