This is where a young Leon Marchand first swam. Coloma believes Marchand has been the star of the Olympic Games (Tom Burrows/The Athletic)“Everyone is talking about Leon here. Marchand started out at the small indoor winter pool, before graduating to the Olympic pool at the complex — which also has a huge 150m long summer pool. Knowing that someone like Leon Marchand swam here and became what he is today… it’s very inspiring. “Leon Marchand is the best possible flagship for the city that you can dream of — with Dupont as well.

What’s Uniting, and Dividing, Native Voters in ArizonaNative American voters were key to helping Democrats clinch Arizona in 2020. But in this election, many Native voters say they feel exhausted, disappointed and torn about how to vote. But overall it was frustration and anxiety that we heard as we talked with more than four dozen voters around Phoenix and on the Navajo Nation, the country’s largest reservation, about their concerns. Many voters felt like they had been left out of the state’s growing economy, with unemployment for Native Americans almost double the national average. Most of the voters we spoke to said no, but some were willing to give him another shot.

After President Joe Biden proved the claim wrong on Thursday by securing the release of Gershkovich and others in a multi-country prisoner exchange, Trump posted a series of skeptical questions on social media. Among other things, Trump wrote: “Are we releasing murderers, killers, or thugs? FactCheck.org debunked this Trump claim about his record on securing the release of American prisoners abroad when he previously made it in 2022. Trump acknowledged at the time that this was a prisoner exchange, telling reporters in 2019: “Yeah, we’re very happy to have our hostage back. And there was a one-on-one hostage swap.”Federal prosecutors also dropped charges against the Iranian scientist’s two co-defendants soon after the prisoner exchange.

My father is an avid surfer who introduced me to the sport at a young age, and the freedom he felt in the ocean had a big impact on me. He faced challenges pursuing the sport, since it was historically reserved for white South Africans and beaches were segregated until 1989. Despite the obstacles he faced, my father never lost his love for the ocean and its power to heal. In 2018 I became the first Black South African surfer to qualify for the World Surf League Championship Tour, an elite professional competition. My parents being so proud of who they are makes me feel proud, too, and I work to continue that legacy.

CNN —Like its titular tornados, “Twisters” blasts through a lot in its 122-minute runtime. Generally, scientists are the least certain about the connection between tornadoes and climate change as it’s unclear how warming temperatures are changing storms themselves or the outbreaks. There is no shortage of pundits in the media class eager to help Americans understand the current political moment. In his playful way, Mr. Schlossberg, 31, has captured the attention of his social-media-native audience. Whether that is because of his remarkable resemblance to his uncle, John F. Kennedy Jr., or because of his ability to distill complex Supreme Court rulings into bite-size videos, it’s hard to say. As one of the most prominent members of the Kennedy family, America’s most enduring political dynasty, Mr. Schlossberg has always borne some expectation of being involved in public life. “I am inspired by my family’s legacy of public service,” Mr. Schlossberg, who is the only grandson of President John F. Kennedy, recently told Vogue.

Marshal tasked with protecting Supreme Court justices' homes shot an alleged armed carjacker near the Washington residence of Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor last week, authorities said Tuesday. The suspect, 18-year-old Kentrell Flowers of Southeast D.C., allegedly pulled a handgun on the marshal, who was in a parked car in the Northwest section of the city around 1:15 a.m. The marshal drew his own gun and "fired several shots at the suspect," the MPD said. Another marshal in a separate vehicle also fired at Flowers, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Near the end of three years as the United States’ chief representative in Taiwan, Sandra Oudkirk has some parting advice: Avoid panic about China’s combative language and moves, but don’t grow numb to the risks. Ms. Oudkirk has been Washington’s de facto ambassador to Taiwan over a time when the island democracy has become a crucible of tensions between Washington and Beijing. China claims that Taiwan is its territory and must accept unification, by armed force if leaders in Beijing decide that is necessary. At times, debate among Taiwanese and American politicians, officials and experts has taken on some tension as well, over which mix of tactics — what military purchases, what reassuring or unyielding words to Beijing, what steps with fellow democracies — could best reduce the risks of war. Ms. Oudkirk, who leaves her post in Taipei early next month, suggested that Taiwan and its partners needed to find a steady path, avoiding both hysteria and complacency.

Details of the content of the document come from the latest bail application from prosecutors. DNA evidence initially linked him to a hair found on the burlap sack where Waterman’s remains were found. The 60-year-old architect was surprised by the latest charges, Heuermann attorney Michael Brown said after the defendant appeared in an eastern Long Island courtroom. The bail application said a tattoo on Taylor’s torso had been mutilated with a sharp object. Payden's assets have grown with the firm: As majority owner, she boasts an estimated net worth of roughly $700 million and is a "newcomer" on Forbes' recently published 2024 list of America's Richest Self-Made Women. "I was hired at a 25% discount because I didn't know the difference between a bond and stock," Payden told the Los Angeles Times in 1999. Within a couple years, she moved to Los Angeles to join Scudder, Stevens & Clark, a prestigious money management firm. “Hit Man” suggests that when backing away from misogyny, men, too, have more options, more happiness and more love. “Double Indemnity” turned the trope into an indelible archetype for the morally ambiguous world of film noir. Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray and Tom Powers are pictured in Billy Wilder's "Double Indemnity." The patriarchal world of “Double Indemnity” is as bleakly loveless for men as it is for women. “Hit Man,” and other contemporary noir films, in contrast, are trying to imagine a way out of the “Double Indemnity” double bind.

Rex Heuermann, who was arrested last summer and has been accused of murdering four women in the Gilgo Beach serial killings on Long Island, was indicted Thursday on murder charges in the deaths of two more women. In the meantime, investigators turned to the six other victims — four women, a man and a toddler — whose remains, like those of the first four women, were found along Ocean Parkway by Gilgo Beach. On Thursday, Mr. Heuermann was charged with killing one of them: Jessica Taylor, whose partial remains were found near Gilgo Beach in 2011 and then linked to other partial remains found eight years earlier in a remote wooded area in Manorville, a 45-minute drive east. He was also charged with killing Sandra Costilla, a 28-year-old New York woman whose remains were found in 1993 in the Hamptons. Thomas received 103 gifts with a total value of more than $2.4 million between 2004 and 2023, the judicial reform group Fix the Court said in a report Thursday. Fix the Court's analysis found that Alito accepted 16 gifts worth a combined $170,095. Counting those gifts, Thomas' total two-decade haul is valued at nearly $4.2 million. The value and number of gifts Thomas received also eclipsed those accepted by eight retired or dead Supreme Court justices whose tenures overlapped his service on the court, which began in 1991. Antonin Scalia, a conservative justice who died in 2016 while on the court, accepted 67 gifts worth about $210,000 during his tenure, which began in 1986.

Duncan Hunter, a California Republican, pioneered the Mrs. defense when he and his wife were both accused of funneling campaign funds for private use.
