That could change on Wednesday when she becomes one of 75,000 workers who participate in the nation’s largest health care strike in history. During the Great Resignation in 2021-22, more than 5 million people left their health care jobs across the country. “Kaiser Permanente is not immune from these challenges.”While Kaiser admits to the difficult challenge of filling health care jobs, the stress to its current workers has contributed to increased labor tension in the health care industry. The increased number of health care strikes have happened despite health care workers making up only about 9% of private sector union members nationwide. “But for health care workers, it is different.

The Brewers have reached the playoffs five of the last six years, the exception coming last season. There’s a sense of urgency associated with this playoff berth because of the long-term uncertainty surrounding some key figures. The Brewers were one win away from the World Series in 2018 when they lost a Game 7 at home to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but they haven’t won a postseason series since. Although Milwaukee owns a combined 2-10 record against the Atlanta Braves and Dodgers — the NL’s top two playoff seeds — the Brewers’ pitching gives them reason for optimism. The Brewers have lost seven of their last eight postseason games, a stretch that started with that Game 7 defeat in 2018.

"We expect the Bank will hold the overnight rate steady at 5.00% through mid-2024 as the full impact of past rate hikes helps push the economy into a moderate recession. One Morning in Maine, 225 People Went to the Library

It was a beach day, by Maine standards — slightly overcast and moderately balmy, with a hint of balsam in the air. But on a peak-summer morning in July, 225 people steered clear of state parks and went to Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick instead. They were young and old, in strollers and on walkers and strutting the latest technical sandals. They wore pigtails, baby slings, ironic T-shirts, a head scarf, a lobster hat, a crown, a tiara and halos of white hair. As “Sal” McCloskey, now 78, settled into an armchair at the front of Morrell Reading Room, a hush fell over the undulating sea of children at her feet.

Cape Verde stranded migrants return home to Senegal

Reuters —Senegalese authorities on Monday brought home 37 migrants who were rescued off the coast of Cape Verde last week after their boat was stranded without fuel in the Atlantic Ocean for weeks. The survivors, mainly from the fishing village of Fass Boye, landed on Monday evening. Some were taken out of the plane on stretchers, too weak to stand after their ordeal. Authorities organized their repatriation from the Cape Verde island of Sal, where a Senegalese doctor who helped translate between survivors and authorities explained the boat ran out of fuel. Thousands of migrants brave the hundreds of miles of ocean separating Africa from Europe each year in a desperate search for a better livelihood and work opportunities.

Microsoft's cofounder Bill Gates lacked motivation when he was at school and was 'lazy' at math. "Early on in math, I was kind of lazy," 67-year-old Gates said. "And a teacher in eighth grade said, you know: 'How come you're so lazy? Gates explained that the teacher would give him books to read and push him to do better. However, Gates has encouraged students to stick out the full four years of college to get the best out of their education.

Even Bill Gates thought school was boring as a kid. While in middle school, Gates didn't find learning "interesting," he recently said on his "Unconfuse Me" podcast, in an episode featuring Khan Academy CEO Sal Khan. But the teacher spotted potential, and took the opportunity to encourage Gates to put some effort into his education. Gates went on to develop his mathematics and coding skills in high school, before dropping out of Harvard University to co-found Microsoft in 1975. "I do think the AI will be like a great high school teacher who really marks your essay, and you go back and think, 'OK, I need to step up there,'" Gates said.

A 90% majority, 99 of 110 economists, polled Aug 14-18 say the Fed will keep the federal funds rate in the 5.25-5.50% range at its September meeting, in line with market pricing. The Fed's preferred gauge of inflation has fallen sharply from a peak of 7.0% following 11 interest rate hikes from near-zero in early 2022. As recently as June, over a three-quarters majority of economists polled said the Fed would start by end-March. Another 33 respondents, roughly 35%, forecast the Fed will go for its first rate cut in Q2, leaving 79 of 95, or 83% expecting at least one rate cut by mid-2024. That would help price pressures decline over the coming months, making the fed funds rate adjusted for inflation - the real interest rate - more restrictive if held unchanged.

Bill Gates has a vision for how artificial intelligence could transform education — by mimicking your favorite high school English teacher. "Very few students get feedback [from software programs] on an essay that this could be clearer, you really skipped this piece and the reasoning," Gates said. Gates stopped short of saying AI could — or should — ever replace human teachers. Rather, chatbots could assist overworked teachers and help "close the [education] gap" for low-income students around the world, he said. Khan Academy is also experimenting with using the tool to help facilitate student discussions, potentially providing "an army of teaching assistants for every teacher," Khan added.

The billionaire watched ChatGPT achieve the highest possible score on an AP Biology exam in August 2022. Even tech icon Bill Gates says he was caught off-guard by the rapid development of artificial intelligence programs like ChatGPT. The story began last June when Gates first tested the AI-powered chatbot — developed by Microsoft partner OpenAI — and came away unimpressed. Two months later, OpenAI's developers came back, and Gates watched ChatGPT achieve the top score of five on the test. "I'm still, personally, in a state of shock at 'Wow, it is so good,'" Gates said. Still, the rapid development left Gates thoroughly impressed, and excited about the technology's potential applications: "Let's see where we can put it to good use," he said.
