China’s military exercises around Taiwan, a democracy of 23 million people, have become increasingly frequent in recent years and have tended to coincide with events that have angered Beijing. In August 2022, China launched a week of military drills following a visit to the island by then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Ahead of the drills, the Eastern Theater Command released a propaganda video entitled “prepared for battle” on its social media accounts. The PLA did not say whether the drills involved live fire exercises, and, as of now, China has not launched any missiles. A total of seven Chinese warships plus additional Coast Guard vessels were detected near the Taiwan Strait, according to the ministry.

I sailed on Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Breakaway this year, which were built 14 years apart. Breakaway provides more modern amenities and dining options than the older and tinier Sky. While I have yet to experience the company's extremely attraction-heavy Norwegian Prima class, I have sailed on the more bare-bones Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Breakaway. Breakaway launched in 2013 and is tied as Norwegian's sixth biggest ship at about 145,600 gross tons. But at twice the size of Sky, it has modern attractions and plentiful dining that offer a fair amount of added fun that the tinier ship lacks.

Royal Caribbean says its next Icon class ship, Star of the Seas, will set sail in August 2025. The first vessel in its class, Icon of the Seas, debuted in early 2024 to massive success. The three people who lost their lives in Alaska are just a few of those who have died on trips to see the world’s fast-disappearing glaciers. But there’s also another motivation increasingly present — the desire to see the glaciers before they disappear. In Alaska, Sheldon used to be able to find a good area for ice climbing for the whole summer. Many are convinced danger is manageable, he told CNN, but “if you’re honest about it, that might often be a rather naive understanding.”As well the safety issues glaciers pose tourists, tourists are also a huge risk to the glaciers themselves. As the glaciers shift, so too will glacier tourism, something that’s starkly clear to Sheldon.

NICE, France Associated Press —At least eight people died during a failed attempt to cross the English Channel from northern France, French maritime authorities said Sunday. At least 46 migrants had died while trying to cross to the UK this year, said Billant, the Pas-de-Calais prefect. At least 137,563 people have reached the United Kingdom after crossing the Channel from France since 2018, according to UK Home Office figures. Other surveillance and rescue operations are underway Sunday along the entire Pas-de-Calais coast amid stormy weather conditions and agitated sea, French maritime authorities said. They warned anyone who tries to cross the Channel on flimsy and overloaded boats and in often difficult weather conditions of “significant risks.”In July, four migrants died while attempting the crossing on an inflatable boat that capsized and punctured.
