CNN —Anna Kendrick has recalled the “very icky” time a director tried to shame her in front of a room full of extras. She went on to recall a story about an unnamed director asking her to improvise something, only to later criticize her performance. Kendrick was asked by presenter Josh Horowitz what the worst note was that a director had ever given her. “Then the director came over and once again, in front of a hundred extras, went ‘oof, let’s go back to the script,’” she recalled. The end of American careerism

AdvertisementClimbing the corporate ladder was once the cornerstone of the American dream. Maybe that's why earlier this year, a young New Yorker struck a chord on TikTok when he vowed to "descend the corporate ladder." Eventually, he got promoted into a corporate office role, and that opened up even more opportunities for advancement. "That was a betrayal from a company I had been incredibly dedicated to," Zack told me. Besides, the dream of climbing the corporate ladder was probably never as great as it seemed to be.

What can account for this shocking abdication from editorial responsibility on the eve of what may well be the most consequential election in our nation’s history? As Mr. Snyder has astutely observed: “Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked.”How sad! Adam HorvathEugene, Ore.To the Editor:Except for its timing so close to the election, the decision by The Washington Post to stop endorsing presidential candidates is commendable. In the current hyperpartisan and hyperpolarized political environment, the practice of newspapers endorsing political candidates has become counterproductive.

CNN —Prince William has opened up about how a powerful childhood experience with his brother and late mother helped shape his work in combatting homelessness. In the Prince of Wales’ forthcoming documentary, “Prince William: We Can End Homelessness,” the 42-year-old heir to the British throne recalls visiting The Passage, a British charity for the homeless, alongside his late mother, Diana. “My mother took me to The Passage; she took Harry and I both there,” William says in a newly released clip from the two-part documentary. The series, directed by BAFTA winner Leo Burley, features stories of those currently facing homelessness or who have experienced it. Speaking at an awards ceremony for the Centrepoint homelessness charity earlier this month, the prince said homelessness is”a complex societal issue” but that he “passionately” believes it can be eradicated.

Russia's economy is showing some signs that the kind of risk-taking associated with innovation and entrepreneurship is on the decline. Innovation in Russia has fallen behind the nation's level of development, according to a 2024 ranking from the World Intellectual Property Organization. CNN —President Joe Biden is expected to issue an apology to the Native American community for the federal government’s role in the abusive Indian boarding schools that forced Native American children to assimilate over a 150-year period, two sources familiar with the plans said. “The federally-run Indian boarding school system was designed to assimilate Native Americans by destroying Native culture, language and identity through harsh militaristic and assimilationist methods,” the White House said Thursday. In 2021, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary, commissioned the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative to review the impact of the federal boarding school policies. The department issued a final report this summer confirming at least 973 Native American children died while attending these federal boarding schools. At least 18,000 children were taken from their families and forced to attend more than 400 Indian boarding schools across 37 states or then-territories between 1819 and 1969.
