CNN —The search for three people missing after a landslide covered an Alaskan highway on Monday is moving “from an active search to a reactive search,” Alaskan authorities said. Rescuers have so far found the remains of three people who died after the landslide hit the Zimovia Highway, near Wrangell, around 9 p.m. Monday evening. Authorities may restart the active search if new evidence shows the missing people might be in a specific area, they said. Authorities plan to release the names of those who died and the missing people on Friday, the department said in its Thursday release. Mike Dunleavy has issued a disaster declaration in Wrangell due to the effects of the landslide, his office posted on social media.

The attacks left their inflatable boat partly sunken – prompting them to issue a distress call to nearby vessels in the early hours of Wednesday. Shark attacks damaged the catamaran's inflatable hull, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said. Unlike great whites or hammerheads, cookiecutter sharks are not usually associated with attacks in the open ocean. Cookiecutter sharks have only been involved in four confirmed, unprovoked bites, which all happened in Hawaii, it said, citing the International Shark Attack File. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said in a statement Wednesday that “a large section” of the inflatable vessel’s hull was missing when it was found.

Maritime historians found a schooner that sank in 1881 intact in Lake Michigan. Brendon Baillod and Robert Jaeck found the shipwreck of the 156-year-old vessel back in July. The vessel is so well-preserved that its crew's possessions are still present. Baillod and Jaeck found the vessel by reading historical accounts of the shipwreck by survivors, then deploying side-scan sonar to track its location more accurately. The wreckage turned out to belong to a large, wooden ship built during World War 1. The Texas Historical Commission said more than two dozen of these sunken ships are in Texas rivers. Milner sent photos of his find to the local Ice House Museum, which then contacted the Texas Historical Commission. Ukrainian officials have documented an uptick in dolphin and porpoise deaths near the Black Sea. They may use the data to build a case accusing Russia of environmental war crimes, NYT reported. That's according to The New York Times, which reported that there's been a significant increase in dead dolphins and porpoises washing ashore in the Black Sea.
