The three people who lost their lives in Alaska are just a few of those who have died on trips to see the world’s fast-disappearing glaciers. But there’s also another motivation increasingly present — the desire to see the glaciers before they disappear. In Alaska, Sheldon used to be able to find a good area for ice climbing for the whole summer. Many are convinced danger is manageable, he told CNN, but “if you’re honest about it, that might often be a rather naive understanding.”As well the safety issues glaciers pose tourists, tourists are also a huge risk to the glaciers themselves. As the glaciers shift, so too will glacier tourism, something that’s starkly clear to Sheldon.

How Fed rate cuts affect the global economy

The Federal Reserve's interest rate decisions can influence the trajectory of the U.S. economy. Changes to the Fed's interest rate can influence the cost of loan products such as mortgages and the value of cash, bonds and stocks. The Federal Reserve's decision to cut interest rate comes after months of shaky labor market data in the U.S. Fed decisions can also impact foreign exchange markets given their effect on the value of U.S. dollars, the global reserve currency. Economists at the Fed write that China's central bank has managed the value of the yuan to help the country achieve its goals on trade.

And an expert in political violence and terrorism is worried the worst is yet to come. The justification of political violence online is getting worse, too, with increasingly high-profile people laughing off violent incidents. Plenty of such data exists about Trump's rhetoric, Pape noted, and he said there is no doubt that "incendiary political rhetoric increases support for political violence." "What you're seeing is real-world violence reflecting this significant rhetorical support for political violence on both the right and the left," Pape said. That marks a real GDP growth rate of 51.1% between 2010 and 2021, meaning an economic contribution that's 2.7 times that of the non-Hispanic population. Despite those large figures, some economists think that U.S. Latinas could be contributing more to GDP than the report's figure. One way to tackle these problems is to make chocolate without using cocoa beans — the fermented seed of the cacao tree. It also makes cocoa powder and cocoa butter substitutes. “Instead of cocoa beans, we use fava beans sourced from farms across the UK and Europe, and then we ferment them in a similar way that cocoa farmers ferment their cocoa beans,” said Ross Newton, CEO of Nukoko, a UK-based startup that aims to launch on its domestic market next year. A study published this year shows it’s possible to make chocolate using only the cocoa pod, by replacing traditional sugar with a cocoa gel. “You make chocolate using only components from the fruit and not conventional crystallized sugar from sugar beets.

Gen Z has a unique way of learning, and they seek a different path to navigate college. For example, Gen Z highly favors a teaching method known as the flipped classroom, where students watch online videos and expert-narrated demonstrations before coming to class. Veteran investor David Roche expects a bear market in 2025 caused by smaller-than-expected rate cuts, a slowing U.S. economy and an artificial intelligence bubble. "I think [a bear market] is probably coming, but probably in 2025. Roche expects the Fed to resist reducing rates to the market's desired 3.50%. "The second thing is that profits [won't] fulfill expectations, because the economy is going to be slowing," Roche warned. The third factor Roche expects will lead to a bear market is the AI sector.

A wild week of trading on Wall Street ended with the S & P 500 back roughly where it started, but the lessons learned by whipsawed investors over those five days could determine what happens next. U.S. stocks have whipsawed since last Friday, with a sharp sell-off followed by a bounce-back on Thursday. This led the S&P 500 to its strongest session since 2022, leaving it around the 5,310 level. The S&P 500 is facing a key test level as the consensus view of a soft landing for the U.S. economy reaches a "make or break" point, according to one strategist. But essentially what that means is a bull trap squeeze, where there's a lot of leveraged, bullish views on [the] back of a consensus soft landing view, which ultimately is now make or break." William described a bull trap as a selling point in which bullish consensus is proven wrong.
