LONDON, Feb 16 (Reuters) - Britain's agency that determines if medicines should be used in the National Health Service (NHS) said on Thursday it is speeding up how it decides if COVID-19 therapies are still effective against circulating variants. The new review process will enable the agency to update its recommendations on the cost-effectiveness of COVID treatments so they can be made available more swiftly to patients, it said. "The rapidly evolving nature of COVID-19 means we need to have a way of establishing the cost effectiveness of existing medicines against current variants in an agile way," the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) said. It said there is no evidence of Evusheld's clinicial effectiveness against current variants and those likely to be circulating in the next 6 months. The announcement comes as demand for COVID treatments appears set to drop this year, due to population immunity from high rates of vaccination and previous infections.
After years of drought, California has received an epic amount of rain already in 2023. The Sacramento Valley is the hub of California’s rice production. During the seed planting and growing season, which runs from March through August, farmers flood rice fields with up to five inches of water. The way the rice business goes is how the economy goes,” Ponciano said. “After harvest season, the sky over the rice fields would be filled with geese and ducks,” he said.
Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, that the judge overseeing their Miami cases, U.S. District Judge Michael Moore, has already proven in their brand ambassador cases that he can steer FTX cases quickly and efficiently. Not everyone pursuing claims on behalf of FTX customers agrees with Boies and Moskowitz. (To be clear, these private cases are different from cases that could be brought by a court-appointed receiver or trustee in FTX’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy.) If the cases go to California, the California slate is a likelier candidate. It will be a few months before any ruling on the Boies and Moskowitz consolidation petition.

Elon Musk Twitter page seen on mobile with his poll to step down as head of TwitterAccess to Twitter was restored in Turkey late Wednesday after network restrictions left people in the country unable to use the site, according to internet monitoring site NetBlocks. NetBlocks said on Twitter Wednesday that its network data showed access to the platform being restored "following hours of filtering." Elon Musk, Twitter's CEO, tweeted the company was "informed by the Turkish government that access will be reenabled shortly." Twitter was blocked for many Turks on Wednesday after a series of earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria on Monday. Nine hours apart and measuring a magnitude of 7.8 in Turkey and 7.5 in Syria on the Richter scale, the quakes were the region's strongest in nearly a century.
One major emerging markets guru, Mark Mobius of Mobius Capital Partners LLP, remains bullish despite the earthquake disaster and economic problems. "When it comes to investing in Turkey, we still believe it's a viable place to invest," Mobius said. Mobius did note the glaring issue of Turkey's earthquake preparation, which may soon come to haunt Erdogan's election chances. NATO and Turkey's powerful role on the global stageInternationally, Turkey's future affects the war in Ukraine, given Erdogan's role as a mediator between Ukraine and Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to meet Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday.
That announcement came after nearly four months of intense talks complicated by concerns about the sharing of intellectual property as Renault sought tie-ups with companies outside their alliance. The deal will see the French carmaker reduce its stake in Nissan to 15% from around 43%. That will see Renault put around 28% of the Japanese automaker in a French trust, crucially making the two more equal partners. While Renault bailed out Nissan two decades ago, it is the smaller automaker by sales. "One almost wonders what's the point of them having any stake in either one, any stake at all," Richter said.

Companies Richter Gedeon Vegyeszeti Gyar Nyrt FollowBUDAPEST, Dec 27 (Reuters) - Hungarian drugmaker Richter expects (GDRB.BU) to pay about 28 billion forints ($74.44 million) worth of extra taxes this year, it said on Tuesday, hit by tax hikes on big businesses to plug budget holes. Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government announced on Friday that a windfall tax imposed on drug producers based on net revenues in 2022 and 2023 would increase progressively, rising to 8% on net revenues exceeding 150 billion forints ($398 million). The 2022 tax take represents some 14% of Richter's nine-month net profit, which more than doubled from the same period a year earlier, boosted by favourable exchange rate effects. "The tax is expected to be accounted under Other expenses thus will proportionally lower the Company's operating profit and free cash-flow for 2022," Richter said in a statement. "Other elements of financial targets set for 2022 and released in the public domain are kept unchanged."
BUDAPEST, Dec 24 (Reuters) - Hungary's government has imposed a windfall tax on drug producers based on net revenues generated in 2022 and 2023, as it tries to plug holes in the state budget. According to a government decree late on Friday, the rate increases progressively, and will be 8% on net revenues exceeding 150 billion forints ($398 million). Nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban earlier this year imposed big windfall taxes on a range of sectors including banks, insurers, energy and airlines. That rattled investors and recalled memories of similar taxes that the populist Orban had used to fix the budget after he swept to power in 2010. The decree said the new tax will be 1% on net revenues below 50 billion forints, and 3% on the part of revenues between 50 billion and 150 billion, jumping to 8% on net revenues exceeding 150 billion forints.

Dec 6 (Reuters) - The protester who ran onto the field during the World Cup game between Portugal and Uruguay holding a rainbow flag has told Reuters that FIFA president Gianni Infantino intervened to ensure he was set free by Qatari authorities. "The police from Qatar are very like gentlemen, very friendly, asked me if I wanted water, coffee, a croissant. Ferri said he was in custody for around half an hour when the FIFA president suddenly appeared. "I'm forever trying to fight for a new world, I want no war in the world.

ATHENS, Nov 29 (Reuters) - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 shook central Greece on Tuesday and was felt as far as Athens, according to witnesses, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or serious damage. The quake occurred at 2006 GMT and its epicentre was 57 km (35 miles) northeast of Athens, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre. Earlier on Tuesday, an earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale shook the island of Evia, in central Greece, damaging old buildings in the area and forcing authorities to shut down schools protectively. Greece is often rattled by earthquakes, most causing no serious damage. Reporting by Renee Maltezou; Editing by Jonathan OatisOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
Peter Szijjarto told a news briefing that Hungary would ask Brussels to take steps to ensure that Ukrainian authorities "should not make the operations of EU companies impossible". "These companies have not violated any rules, their only "sin" is that they also have a presence in Russia," he added. Szijjarto said Hungary would not be against a potential extension of the full customs free status for Ukrainian products that is in place in the EU until July 2023. Hungarian drugmaker Richter said earlier this month that due to a change in Ukrainian legislation meant that marketing authorization for some products may be revoked if a manufacturer operates and pays taxes in Russia. Richter said in its third-quarter earnings report that it planned to appeal a decision to suspend 35 of its products.
Scantinel Photonics has raised $10 million in Series A funding from PhotonDelta. The German startup uses photonics chips to make autonomous driving more precise and safe. The startup says the game-changer is its use of photonics chips. These photonics chips are used to make LiDAR solutions and devices — which are integrated into AVs, and key in helping vehicles to sense objects and estimate distances on the road. Scantinel says it is pioneering a "new wave of LiDAR technology" that's more immune to interference and precise in its imaging, said managing director Dr. Michael Richter.

REUTERS/Ajeng Dinar UlfianaJAKARTA, Nov 21 (Reuters) - A magnitude 5.6 earthquake rattled the Indonesian capital Jakarta for several seconds on Monday, the weather and geophysics agency (BMKG) said. The epicentre was on land in Cianjur in West Java, about 75 km southeast of Jakarta, and at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), BMKG said, adding there was no potential for a tsunami. Muchlis, who was in Cianjur when the quake hit, said he felt "a huge tremor" and the walls and ceiling of his office building were damaged. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale.

Biogen shares have a lot more potential upside for investors thanks to positive new data around the company's early Alzheimer's drug, Goldman Sachs said Wednesday. The upgrade followed the company's earnings call, which had a big focus on the drug, lecanemab, an anti-amyloid antibody that is in phase 3 trials. Goldman also raised its revenue estimates for the drug to $14 billion in 2035, compared with prior estimates of $2 billion. "The company is now poised to address the early Alzheimer's disease market in 2023+ following the recent topline lecanemab Ph3 (CLARITY-AD) data," Goldman analyst Salveen Richter said in a note. "With BIIB shares now trading at ~$270 post the topline CLARITY-AD data, there is roughly ~$80/share reflected in the stock for Alzhiemer's disease," Richter said.
Finnish seismologists detect five blasts in Russian waters
  + stars: | 2022-10-25 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
HELSINKI, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Finnish seismologists detected five underwater blasts in Russian waters in the Baltic Sea last week, the Helsinki University Institute of Seismology said on Tuesday. Four explosions were recorded on Thursday and one on Friday in Russian territorial waters in the Gulf of Finland, Tiira said, adding it had been clear that the observations had been caused by blasts and not by other seismic activity. "It can be seen in the shape of the signal and in the content of its frequency," he said. The institute did not know what had caused the blasts but that similar disturbances had been detected during previous naval drills and sweeping of old mines from the sea bottom, Tiira said. "We have detected explosions in that same area before, but not very often, not even every year," he said.
An initial crime scene investigation last week into what caused the gas leaks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines reinforced suspicions of "gross sabotage." The explosions triggered four gas leaks at four locations — two in Denmark's exclusive economic zone and two in Sweden's exclusive economic zone. Neither of the Nord Stream pipelines was transporting gas at the time of the blasts, although they both contained pressurized methane — a potent greenhouse gas. A satellite image of the Nord Stream leak in the Baltic Sea, captured on Sept. 26, 2022. Environmental impactThe unexplained Nord Stream gas leaks pose serious questions about the incident's environmental impact.
The US has considered analyzing underwater audio recordings of the Nord Stream pipelines' damage, per CNN. It depends in part on the quality of Sweden and Denmark's sound recordings, sources told CNN. The Navy told CNN it was prepared to help investigations into the Nord Stream pipeline damage. Satellite images taken above the Nord Stream pipelines at the time of the event are difficult to examine because of cloudy weather, according to the European Space Agency. Examining underwater audio of the explosions could provide crucial information for the investigation, the sources told CNN.
Leaks in the Nord Stream pipelines were caused by hundreds of pounds of explosives, the UN heard. Denmark and Sweden told the Security Council that TNT was used deliberately to damage the pipelines. More countries have said sabotage was to blame, but Russia suggested the US was responsible. Methane appears to be leaking from the pipelines, with Sweden and Denmark now suggesting they were caused by a massive explosion. But in a statement released on Telegram on Thursday, Moscow suggested that Washington had the most to gain from Nord Stream shutting down.
