Three million Jews had been murdered in occupied Poland by the Nazis — half of all the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Their assets were taken over by Germans and in many cases, after the war, by Poles who were conveniently helped by laws about abandoned property. “It seemed,” Rakowsky notes, “like decades of suppression of facts and enduring self-interest of those who benefited from Jewish property had sealed off this dark history.”Some former neighbors do talk. Boston is piloting three zero-fare public bus routes, and New York City is expected to test free buses on five lines. Fares made up, on average, 12.5% of transit agencies’ operating expenses in 2021, down from 31.4% in 2019, according to the American Public Transit Association. “By offering free public transport, we are not really attracting car drivers in large volumes,” said Mohamed Mezghani, secretary general of the International Association of Public Transport. “There’s no such thing as free transit,” he added.

Still hopeful that I might be able to somehow identify and locate living descendants of the people my family enslaved, I flew to Georgia last November. Her father was also a butler for a wealthy white family, her mother a cook. In 1860, Osby’s ancestors were enslaved and working the fields of Forsyth County.

Richard J. The Financial Accounting Standards Board on Wednesday said it wants companies to provide more information on their income taxes, the group’s latest attempt to give the public more detail on the companies they invest in. At least once a year, public companies have to disclose the amount of cash taxes they pay. Companies must also disclose their effective tax rate, or the ratio between their tax expense and their pretax income. The first proposal came in 2016 and would have required companies to distinguish their U.S. from their foreign income taxes, among other changes. Washington, DC CNN —Tesla CEO Elon Musk is testifying this morning in a shareholder lawsuit examining the massive compensation package that helped make him the world’s richest person. Musk was awarded the compensation package in 2018, and shareholders approved the deal at the time. They’ve also contrasted Musk’s compensation with the average Tesla salary, which they’ve said is $40,000. Musk’s compensation package goals were characterized t as lofty and incredibly difficult to achieve. This is a developing story and will be updated throughout Musk’s testimony.

Elon Musk said in court on Wednesday that he does not want to be the CEO of any company. "I expect to reduce my time at Twitter and find somebody else to run Twitter over time," he said. Musk explained during the testimony that CEO is not necessarily an apt description for the work he says he does at his companies. Musk said he only called on Tesla employees to assist him at Twitter on a "voluntary basis," and to work "after-hours" at Twitter. The Tesla CEO specified that, "This was an after hours-- just if you're interested in evaluating, helping me evaluate Twitter engineering… that'd be nice.
