As holiday shopping gets into full swing, several retailers are poised to outperform, according to UBS. Nearly 25% of consumers plan to spend more this holiday season compared to last year, data from UBS shows. Here are some of the softline retail stocks on the UBS buy list. The names all have a premium position in the marketplace and the best opportunity to "go it alone," without malls or third parties to drive consumer engagement and sales growth, Sole said. "Not only should these companies outperform because of their long-term growth opportunities, but also these growth stocks have the best chance of maintaining or regaining high P/Es," Sole said.

New York CNN —Even the power of Marie Kondo may not be enough to save the Container Store. In 2019 and 2020, the Container Store got a big boost from “Tidying Up,” the hit Netflix show from the home de-cluttering evangelist. Credit rating agencies rank the Container Store as one of the most financially distressed companies in the retail industry. The Container Store had been set to receive a much-needed $40 million financial lifeline from Beyond, the owner of Bed Bath & Beyond and Overstock.com, that would have put Bed Bath & Beyond products on Container Store shelves. “The rise of platforms like Temu have given consumers some much cheaper options for the type of products Container Store sells,” Saunders said.

Target , Kohl's and Best Buy each reported disappointing third-quarter results as early holiday deals fell short of meaningfully boosting their businesses. Choosy consumers have made the gulf between successful and struggling retailers even more stark heading into the holiday shopping season, said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail. That's a smaller year-over-year increase than the 3.9% jump from the 2022 to 2023 holiday season, when spending totaled $955.6 billion. Dick's and Abercrombie both hiked their full-year outlooks this week and said they expect a strong holiday shopping season. Kohl's warned it will have a deeper-than-expected drop in sales and announced a change in CEO ahead of the crucial shopping season.

The tariffs would be a significant escalation of Trump’s previous proposal, which was already a major increase on more targeted tariffs enacted during Trump’s first administration and kept in place by President Joe Biden. Canada is similarly considering its own options, including possible tariffs on U.S. goods, according to The Associated Press. America’s biggest import from Canada is oil — and any increase in energy prices would likely be felt throughout the economy. And in her statement reacting to Trump’s posts, Mexico’s Sheinbaum stated caravans of migrants were no longer reaching the border. And now he’s talking about tariffs to punish Mexico and Canada for not enforcing drugs and migrants across the border.

Such tariffs have the potential to significantly increase the prices consumers pay on nearly everything that isn’t made entirely in the US, of which there are very few goods. And as we witnessed during the pandemic, “stockpiling by consumers can actually lead to higher prices in and of themselves and empty store shelves,” he said. That said, here are five items that are likely to get more expensive with any new tariffs Trump imposes that may make sense to purchase before he takes office. But if you need a new one – or will soon – now’s a good time to consider buying. China's industrial profits dropped by 10% in October from a year ago, in another sign that Beijing's stimulus measures have yet to reverse a slump in corporate earnings. Industrial profits are a key gauge of the financial health of factories, mines and utilities in China. In the first ten months, profits at China's industrial firms decreased by 4.3% from a year ago, the National Bureau of Statistics said in a statement Wednesday. China's consumer price index in October rose slower than expected, edging up 0.3% from a year ago, marking the slowest rise since June.
