The banking crisis continues to keep investors on edge about the health of regional banks. Now Goldman Sachs has identified what it said are the biggest winners and losers in the industry in the aftermath of the Silicon Valley Bank collapse. The Wall Street investment bank said the biggest short-term risk for regional banks could come from shifting market shares of deposits as corporates look to diversify. Meanwhile, there is the potential that regional banks will need to "pay up" to prevent deposits from moving to other banks "or leave bank balance sheets entirely," Goldman said. These stocks are all down more than 20% in March as investors spooked by the crisis dumped regional bank shares.
East West Bancorp and Citizens Financial made its list of stocks investors should look at. Regional banks with strong deposit balances and have high percentages of insured deposits are solid bets. Silicon Valley Bank's deposits fell 13% during that same period as the bank's primary venture capital customers struggled with rising interest rates. Yokum called Regions Financial is a leader in insured deposits, with an outsized 63% of its deposits insured. Yokum has "buy" ratings on Citizens Financial Group, Fifth Third Bancorp, Regions Financial, Synovus Financial and Webster Financial.

Cory Booker and Raphael Warnock have urged the CEOs of 10 major banks to waive overdraft and nonsufficient fund fees that could cost some Americans more than $100 a day in the wake of the failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. The letters went to the CEOs of Wells Fargo , U.S. Bank , Truist Financial Corp ., TD Bank , Regions Financial Corp ., PNC Bank , JPMorgan Chase , Huntington National Bank , Citizens Bank and Bank of America . Regulators shuttered New York-based Signature Bank days later in an effort to stall a potential banking crisis. Booker and Warnock said banking customers whose paydays fell between March 10 and March 13 were unable to receive or deposit checks from payroll providers banking with SVB and Signature Bank. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Tuesday said the department is prepared to guarantee all deposits for financial institutions beyond SVB and Signature Bank if the crisis worsens.
Silicon Valley Bank's collapse , as well as the closure of crypto-focused Signature Bank and Silvergate Capital, all in March, "takes us further away from risks being idiosyncratic," analyst Betsy Graseck wrote in a note Monday. The end result is lower net interest margins, net interest income and return on equity across the industry, Graseck wrote. Among the large-cap banks, JPMorgan Chase , Wells Fargo and Regions Financial are buys, she said. Wells Fargo sank 8.7% and Regions Financial tumbled 11.8%, while American Express lost 5.5% over the same period. Of that total, JPM and Wells Fargo contributed $5 billion each.

The short answer seems to be, not much, but banks have a whole other list of problems. Signature Bank , a commercial bank based in New York City with a small exposure to crypto, is down about 15% to a new low this week on its exposure to crypto. Not surprisingly, analysts are trying to parse the distinctions between Silvergate, a bank that was a major player in the crypto space, and other banks who merely had some interest in crypto. Joe Raedle | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesIf you think the economy is confusing right now, consider how baffling it must look to Home Depot and Walmart. Home Depot said consumer spending is holding up, but that it expects a flat sales-growth year overall, with declining profits. Friday's PCE showed consumer spending rose more than expected as prices increased, jumping 1.8% for the month compared to the estimate of 1.4%. It wasn't a good week for the retail sector or consumer stocks, either. "The outlook for sustained consumer spending growth remains," wrote consumer analyst Jason English.
The top picks of Morgan Stanley bank analyst Betsy Graseck are looking undervalued as the market rallies, she said Wednesday in a report. "Our most preferred stocks RF, WFC & JPM have largely been left out of the current market rally and look undervalued for their asset sensitivity and skew to quality," Graseck said. Graseck is among the analysts who have generally urged caution on banks because loan losses are expected to rise this year as the economy slows or even enters a recession. But bank stocks have caught a bid in early 2023, along with 2022's other beaten-down sectors, with the KBW Bank Index up 11.5% so far. Her three top picks could rise a median 24%, about 4% more than other large cap banks in her coverage in a base-case scenario, she said.

With the macro picture turning foggy again, streaming giant Netflix (NFLX.O) generated a rare bright spark in an otherwise gloomy corporate earnings season. But it has bounced back more than 60% from the lows of last June and the leadership shakeup may not shape the road ahead. With aggregate S&P500 earnings tracking a year-on-year contraction of about 3% for the fourth quarter, the Netflix news was welcome. In wider markets, a dour Thursday showed some retreat of the early year optimism on peaking central bank interest rates. Investors in the week ahead will focus on how much inflation and the slowing economy have chiseled away at corporate profits, as companies including Goldman Sachs , Netflix and Procter & Gamble report earnings. "This is going to be the start of the clock ticking on an earnings recession," said Amanda Agati, chief investment officer of PNC Asset Management Group. Economic recession talk heats up "There's never been a recession without an earnings recession since World War II," Agati said. Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Financial, said this coming earnings week could be an important step towards assessing the health of corporate balance sheets. JPMorgan (JPM.N), Bank of America (BAC.N), Wells Fargo (WFC.N) and Citigroup (C.N) all report fourth-quarter earnings on Friday. The good news is that for the year ahead, rising interest rates twinned with growing loan books should more than make up for sliding investment banking fees. The CFPB squeezed a $3.7 billion settlement from serial miscreant Wells Fargo in December for wrongly levying charges on customers. CONTEXT NEWSJPMorgan, Bank of America, Citigroup and Wells Fargo will report fourth-quarter 2022 earnings on Jan. 13. The CFPB said that Wells Fargo will also allocate over $2 billion in redress to customers.
The boomlet from Fed Chair JeromePowell's speech is now over. Second, a string of hot economic reports (November nonfarm payrolls, strong hourly earnings, strong ISM Services report), has convinced many that the much anticipated year-end stock rally is not going to happen. At the Goldman Sachs Financial Services Conference on Tuesday, CEOs were cautious but not gloomy. While some chose to focus on one or two CEOs warning of a slowing economy, most CEOs at the conference were not pessimistic. The bottom line: Investors, for the moment, are choosing to believe that the outlook for 2023 is leaning more to "earnings are going lower" rather than "earnings will be flat."
While the S&P 500 is down nearly 20% year-to-date, its energy sector is up about 60% so far in 2022. JPMorgan recommends these 8 Russell 2000-listed energy stocks amid a harsh macro backdrop. Amid the central bank's monetary tightening to combat near 40-year high inflation, stocks continue their downtrend. Energy stocks, in particular, could be a nice buying opportunity as the US economy appears to be heading toward a recession. With a mix of both growth and value stocks, JPMorgan recommends these 10 Russell 2000-listed stocks amid harsh macro conditions.
The firm's Analyst Focus List is a compilation of its analysts' favorite names for various investment strategies, and it gets a refresh every month. Almost all the stocks included have overweight ratings and are recommended for growth or value strategies. For November, the analysts removed a handful of stocks, including First Republic , and added just one: the cancer treatment developer BioAtla . JPMorgan included the stock for a near-term strategy and put a $23 price target on it. McDonald's , Allstate , AbbVie and Qualcomm are among the value stocks that are in the mix.

There's a flashing red warning sign hitting one of the biggest segments of the US economy: the housing market. This is all a recipe for disaster, and it could ultimately lead to a 20% decline in housing prices, according to Pantheon Macro's chief economist Ian Shepherdson. The housing market is in free fall with "no floor in sight." Pantheon Macroeconomics' chief economist Ian Shepherdson is sounding the alarm on the housing market, warning that home prices could fall as much as 20%. The price movement has some scratching their heads, given that demand for lumber is largely tied to the housing market, which can't get out of its own way due to soaring mortgage rates.

S & P 500 earnings are expected to grow by 3.6% for the third quarter, based on actual reports and estimates, according to Refinitiv. WASHINGTON, Sept 28 (Reuters) - The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has ordered Regions Financial Corp (RF.N) to pay $191 million in fines and refunds, after the regulator said the Birmingham, Alabama-based bank charged customers illegal overdraft fees for years. From 2018 to 2021 Regions charged roughly $141 million in illegal fees, which will be refunded, the CFPB said in a statement on Wednesday. The bank will also pay a $50 million fine. "Regions Bank raked in tens of millions of dollars in surprise overdraft fees every year, even after its own staff warned that the bank's practices were illegal," CFPB Director Rohit Chopra said in the statement. "Too often, large financial firms make a calculation that continuing to break the law is more profitable than following it."
