The Shell logo is displayed outside a petrol station in Radstock in Somerset, England, on Feb. 17, 2024. British oil giant Shell on Thursday posted stronger-than-expected second-quarter profit despite lower refining margins and weaker liquified natural gas trading. The company reported adjusted earnings of $7.7 billion in the first quarter of 2024. Shell said it would launch a $3.5 billion share buyback program over the next three months, a similar scheme as in the previous quarter. British rival BP on Tuesday increased its dividend and extended its share repurchasing program on the back of stronger-than-expected earnings.

Alev Kelter helped her team win bronze in rugby sevens — the US's first Olympic medal in the sport. But that wasn't the case for Alev Kelter, an American rugby sevens player who scored on Tuesday to help Team USA win its first medal in the sport. She'd never even touched a rugby ball, but she thought ice hockey may have given her the right mentality for rugby. In 2016, just two years after picking up a rugby ball, Kelter was among the first rugby sevens players to compete in the Olympics. Sevens features seven-person teams playing seven-minute halves instead of the traditional 15-player teams playing 40-minute halves.

British oil giant BP on Tuesday reported stronger-than-expected net profit for the second quarter and raised its dividend despite previously warning of significantly lower refining margins. The oil and gas major posted underlying replacement cost profit, used as a proxy for net profit, of $2.8 billion for the second quarter. BP reported net profit of $2.7 billion for the first three months of the year and $2.6 billion for the second quarter of 2023. BP said earlier in the month that weak refining margins and lower oil trading results would likely dent the firm's second-quarter results by as much as $700 million. BP's net debt stood at $22.6 billion at the end of the second quarter, down from $23.7 billion compared to the same period last year.

Nickel mining in Indonesia has surged, making it the world's top producer of the metal. With over 14 active mines, Indonesia supplies more than 40% of global nickel demand, driven by its crucial role in electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The rapid growth in nickel production is closely linked to Indonesia's partnership with China, the largest global EV battery producer. Chinese investments have bolstered Indonesia's mining capabilities, focusing on refining nickel locally following a 2022 ban on raw nickel exports. Increased nickel production in Indonesia has led to oversupply and lower prices, impacting producers in Australia and Canada.

It also came in above the high end of management's guidance. But here's the root of Thursday's selling: Honeywell downwardly revised its full-year guidance for segment margin, earnings per share, and cash flow guidance. The changes are tied to the inclusion of previously closed and announced acquisitions, as well as a slower-than expected-rebound for short-cycle businesses. Unfortunately, despite some "pockets of short-cycle strength," other short-cycle businesses "are not accelerating as much as we had hoped," CFO Greg Lewis said on the call. West Texas oil prices climbed about 2.4% on Wednesday on a bigger-than-expected weekly drop in U.S. crude stockpiles and as a weaker U.S. dollar overshadowed signs of slower economic growth in China. On Tuesday, Brent closed at its lowest since June 14 and WTI at its lowest since June 21. A weaker U.S. dollar also helped support oil prices after it fell to a 17-week low against a basket of other major currencies. A weaker dollar can boost demand for oil by making greenback-denominated commodities like oil cheaper for holders of other currencies. Also supporting crude prices was rising geopolitical risk, said George Khoury, global head of education and research at CFI, adding that tensions in the Middle East and Europe could continue to fuel risks.

Oil prices were little changed on Tuesday, holding near the two-month highs reached in the previous session, on expectations for rising fuel demand from the summer travel season and possible U.S. interest rate cuts that could boost economic growth. Oil prices were little changed on Tuesday, holding near the two-month highs reached in the previous session, on expectations for rising fuel demand from the summer travel season and possible U.S. interest rate cuts that could boost economic growth. Gasoline demand in the U.S., the world's biggest oil consumer, is expected to ramp up as the summer travel season picks up with the Independence Day holiday this week. Still, signs of less-than-expected demand growth have limited gains in oil prices. This was mainly because of lower imports into China, the world's biggest oil importer and the second-largest consumer.

Part of the military's mission at home is to keep stockpiles of goods like critical minerals on hand for emergency wartime use. In the dark on the stockpileAlthough the name suggests otherwise, rare earth minerals are not exactly rare — in fact, they're relatively plentiful. The Biden administration began cutting American imports of Chinese rare earth minerals a few years ago in an effort to decrease US reliance on China for critical minerals. Submarines, fighter aircraft, magnets used in missiles, radar systems, and drones all require critical earth minerals for manufacturing.
