Artificial intelligence is set to give the global data center market a major boost, according to Jefferies, and usher in a "new era of electricity demand." "As GPUs [graphics processing units] have become a larger part of the data center ecosystem and drive AI investments, demand for power and data center space has grown at a feverish pace," the investment bank's analysts wrote in a June 18 note. They noted that demand for data center space has increased between 10% and 20% each year for most of the past 15 years. As the data center market grows, so will demand for electricity, Jefferies said, naming a slew of beneficiaries in these segments and beyond. Among the "pure-play data center" names it likes are Digital Realty Trust and Equinix .

Americans' workplace retirement account balances are growing — but they're still lower than what people say they need to be on track for retirement, new data reveals. The median account balance in the U.S. is now $35,286, according to Vanguard's annual How America Saves report, which tracked the performance of 401(k)s and similar plans in 2023. Some of the lower balance totals have to do with age, too: People often make and save less money earlier in their careers. "People tend to accelerate retirement contributions as they get older because they tend to earn more, but also because they're getting closer to retirement age," says Michelle Gessner, a certified financial planner in Houston. Compound interest is interest that's continually earned on both the principal amount and any accumulated interest, leading to exponential growth over time.

China's retail sales beat expectations in May, climbing 3.7% compared with a year ago, beating expectations of a 3% rise from a Reuters poll of economists. However, other economic metrics, such as industrial output and fixed asset investment, missed Reuters forecasts. Industrial output grew by 5.6% year-on-year, compared to the 6% increase expected, while fixed asset investment rose 4% compared to last May, just shy of the 4.2% forecast by the Reuters poll. On the other hand, the miss in fixed asset investment was dragged by a steeper drop in real estate investment. NBS said that excluding real estate, total fixed asset investment was 8.6% higher compared to last May.

Hedge funds and other short sellers are betting against plenty of stocks even as the market sets new record highs. Many short sellers have pulled back since the start of the meme stock craze, but the practice of betting against stocks is still around. But with interest rates falling and stocks broadly climbing this week, those targeted stocks could be candidates for a so-called short squeeze. In certain cases, this can create a feedback loop where the extra buying pressure forces other short sellers to do the same. That performance could make them more likely to have a short squeeze in the near term, though the exact financial position of those short sellers is unknown.
