New York CNN —What’s the difference between a revolution and a market bubble? Thanks to strong performances in stocks and bonds in 2023, coupled with steady savings rates and employer-provided matching contributions, 401(k) investors ended 2023 very much in the black, reports my colleague Jeanne Sahadi. That’s according to new fourth-quarter data from Fidelity Investments, one of the largest providers of workplace retirement plans that cover 23 million 401(k) participants. Just last week the S&P 500 hit a new all-time high and notched its best showing in a year. But this nearly unprecedented surge in the markets is sparking some concern over what’s driving the rally and whether it can continue. The S&P 500 and Dow last week each reached record levels after blockbuster earnings from the chipmaker set off a broad market rally. The S&P 500 is up more than 6% for the year, but when you equally weigh all of the stocks in the index, it’s up just 2.5%. Last year, the S&P 500 rose by 24.2%, but the equally-weighted index was up by just 11.6%.

The latest iteration of the Beyond Burger, made with avocado oil and 20% less sodiumBeyond Meat is launching a new version of its plant-based burger in grocery stores this spring, betting that an even healthier version of its burgers will lure back consumers. The plant-based meat category, once buzzy, has lost consumers' interest. Retail sales of meat alternatives had fallen 33.6% compared with a year ago as of Jan. 28, according to Circana data. "For the last several years, there have been a combination of campaigns and other efforts to try to poison the well, regarding the health benefits of plant-based meat," Brown said. Critics have attacked plant-based meat from Beyond and its rivals as processed and full of chemicals.

Read previewI've been on 110 cruises in the past few decades, and I've learned some of the best ways to get a great deal before and during a trip. Here are some of my best tips for saving money on a cruise. Drink packages aren't always worth the cost on cruise ships. Many people book excursions through the cruise line because the ship must wait for individuals on its excursions to return. Also consider skipping the onboard spa — I've found many services at sea can cost double what they might on land.

Australian computer scientist Craig Wright entered the witness box at the High Court and testified he was the man behind “Satoshi Nakamoto,” the pseudonym that has masked the identity of the creator of bitcoin. The trial started on Monday and is expected to last a month, before a judge rules at a later date. The ruling will affect three pending lawsuits that Wright has filed based on his claim to having the intellectual property rights to bitcoin. Wright appears to have never done so, despite vowing to prove that he's the owner of the fortune. In the London trial, Hough repeatedly sparred with Wright over the authenticity of documents that he said support his claims.

For Brendan Gibbons, snow rules the day. "I used to say, 'We'll get our snow," Gibbons, director of snow services for Palisades Tahoe, told Business Insider. "The entire business model and opportunities for profit are getting squeezed into a shorter season with lower quality snow," Mankin said. He worries that little ski towns will suffer the most as the climate crisis worsens and potentially consolidate into larger conglomerates. Areas where average winter temperatures exceed -8 degrees Celcius, or 17 degrees Fahrenheit, will lose more and more snowpack with each degree of warming.

From putting greens and par-three holes to full-blown course replicas, the sport is increasingly taking up residence in gardens and backyards as golf enthusiasts of all levels look to shorten their travel time to the tee. California in particular is especially prone to drought, with state officials encouraging its citizens to cut their water usage. Yet “the number one” factor that can hike prices for larger greens, Nappi explains, is — ironically — drainage. Though they don’t require watering, greens sculpted in areas susceptible to heavy rain — such as Florida or Georgia — invite the threat of standing water, which can lead to mold and ruin the playing experience. “You can make it look pretty and beautiful and they love it, but it better play right,” Nappi said.

A six-floor duplex home in San Francisco had its price slashed by $10 million in just three years. It was bought for $20 million in 2020, but then sold for only half that value in November. Home values in San Francisco have been sinking in the last year after reaching a peak in April 2022. AdvertisementA 10,000-square-foot duplex apartment in San Francisco was just sold for only half of its $20 million value from three years ago, as the city's housing market suffers a recent slump. Home prices have been slashed across the US over the last year, but San Francisco is often a poster child for the decline because property there is notoriously expensive.

However, that became more of an issue earlier this year when Musk, as the new boss of Twitter, now X, got rid of the trademark blue check sign of authenticity - now only available at a price. The rise of artificial intelligence has blurred the lines between what is real and what is not, leaving celebrities, brands and social media influencers - among others - keen to prove their authenticity. One of the most notable news stories of the year about deepfake images was of those appearing to show former President Donald Trump being detained by police in a dramatic fashion back in March. In 2022, Merriam-Webster chose “gaslighting” as its word of the year, saying it had become a ubiquitous term in the “age of misinformation.”Other words that led much traffic to the online dictionary in 2023 included coronation, dystopian, indict and doppelgänger. Meanwhile “rizz” went straight to the “top of lookups” in September, when the example of internet-driven slang was added to the dictionary.

His experiences on dating apps were positive, he said, and he valued the ways they introduced him to new people and new experiences. Dating apps know this.
