TOKYO — A 10-year-old student at a Japanese school in China died Thursday after being stabbed on the way to school the day before, Japanese officials said, as they demanded that Beijing do more to protect Japanese nationals in the country. Lin said the boy was a Japanese national whose parents are Japanese and Chinese citizens. “Effective measures will continue to be taken to ensure the safety of foreigners in China, including people from Japan,” he said. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the student was stabbed on Wednesday about 220 yards away from the Shenzhen Japanese School in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. Flags at Japanese diplomatic missions in mainland China and Hong Kong were lowered on Thursday.

The boy was attacked by a man about 200 meters (650 feet) from the gates of the Japanese school in Shenzhen, a tech-hub metropolis home to many Japanese businesses, according to China’s foreign ministry. But Japanese nationality is required for enrollment at the Shenzhen Japanese School, according to its website. Following that attack, Japan’s foreign ministry told Japanese schools to review their safety measures, Kamikawa said. At a regular news conference Wednesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the case was being investigated. China’s foreign ministry has described both attacks as isolated incidents and did not release further information on the motives.

Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge, which operate nearly 670 flights per day carrying about 110,000 daily passengers as well as freight, will now continue flying as normal, the airline said. Air Canada said in a statement the terms of its new agreement with the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) representing more than 5,200 pilots will remain confidential, pending a ratification vote by its members expected to be completed over the next month. “After several consecutive weeks of intense round-the-clock negotiations, progress was made on several key issues including compensation, retirement, and work rules,” said First Officer Charlene Hudy, chair of the Air Canada ALPA master executive council. As a result, some United pilots now earn 92% more than their counterparts at Air Canada, the pilots’ association’s data shows.

CNN —At least two people have been killed and 29 injured in a train collision in Egypt, the country’s health ministry said Saturday. Images from the scene showed crowds of people gathered around the twisted wreckage of the trains as the rescue operations took place. Egypt recorded 2,044 train accidents in 2018 and 1,793 the year before, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). In 2021, at least 32 people were killed and 165 injured when two trains collided. A collision between two trains in Alexandria, Egypt’s second largest city, in August 2017 left more than 40 dead and many more injured.

CNN —A video that surfaced online appears to show bodies on burnt-out Russian military trucks in the country’s southwestern Kursk region, the latest sign that Ukraine’s cross-border assault is probing more deeply and inflicting significant damage on Moscow’s troops. Rybar, one of the more prominent Russian military blogs, published a roundup of developments Friday that said the front lines have “somewhat stabilized” with the arrival of Russian reinforcements.
