CNN witnessed exhausted and angry Palestinians fleeing Khan Younis, once Gaza’s second-biggest city. People displaced in Khan Younis expressed anger at Israel, Hamas and other Arab leaders for the war. They are fighting civilians, women, and children.’Smoke billows over Khan Younis, following Israeli bombing in the neighborhood earlier this week. The IDF post warned civilians in Khan Younis that it “will act forcefully against terrorist organizations. The Civil Defense also alleged that its rescuers in Khan Younis had been targeted while trying to recover civilians.

But as detailed ceasefire negotiations aimed at turning a framework agreement into a final deal stretch into their third week, Netanyahu’s visit will still be critical to the prospects of a ceasefire in Gaza. Senior US officials say a deal is within reach, but the prospects of a deal may hinge on the answer to one key question: Does Netanyahu actually want a deal? And the right-wing coalition partners keeping him in power have threatened to bolt if Netanyahu cuts a deal that ends the war. And publicly, his rhetoric has undermined confidence in Israel’s commitment to reaching a deal that could end the war. And Netanyahu’s allies insist he is earnest in his desire to strike a hostage release deal – just the right deal, one that could allow Israel to resume fighting in Gaza.

Gavin Newsom of California, had previously said he would not challenge Ms. Harris. He often rambles incoherently in interviews and at campaign rallies and has confused names, dates and facts just as Mr. Biden has. Mr. Biden consistently maintained that his experience was an advantage, enabling him to pass landmark legislation and manage foreign policy crises. He maintained that he was the Democrat best equipped to defeat Mr. Trump given that he did so in 2020. After months of waiting, Fida Ghanem was granted a permit by Israel and Egypt to leave Gaza for urgent lymphoma treatment in the spring. But the next morning, Israeli forces seized the only border crossing from Gaza to Egypt, in Rafah, as part of a military offensive against Hamas in the area. “She should have been allowed to leave as soon as they found the cancer,” said her husband, Maher Ghanem. “But it was delay after delay.”For nearly all Gazans, the southern Rafah crossing has been the only way out since the war began nine months ago. Without rule of law, without a peacekeeping force, without humanitarian aid, Gaza will combust and descend into civil chaos. This route is used by both commercial and aid trucks, as well as convoys like the one I am in, transporting aid workers. Palestinians storm trucks loaded with humanitarian aid brought in through a new US-built pier in central Gaza on May 18. They are waiting to ambush aid trucks, but they smile and wave at our far less tempting UN-marked jeeps. A fear of “the war after the war.” Some believe it has started already.

CNN —Israel has announced that a Hamas commander was killed in Saturday’s strike on southern Gaza, but the fate of the major target, Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif, remains uncertain. The Israeli military is verifying whether he was killed while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also acknowledged it is uncertain whether he died. The Ministry of Health in Gaza said the strike killed at least 90 Palestinians and injured 300 others in Al-Mawasi, a designated humanitarian zone. If his death is confirmed, Deif would be the highest profile Hamas leader killed since the war in Gaza began nine months ago. Israeli intelligence services said this past week they killed a total of 25 Hamas operatives involved in the October 7 attacks.

Israel conducted a major airstrike in southern Gaza on Saturday morning that it said had targeted a top Hamas military commander who is considered one of the architects of the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, according to six senior Israeli officials. The Gaza Health Ministry said that 90 people had been killed in the assault, half of them women and children, and 300 wounded. The commander targeted in the attack, Muhammad Deif, is the leader of the Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing. He is the second most senior Hamas figure in Gaza, after its leader in the territory, Yahya Sinwar. As of Saturday night, the status of Mr. Deif and Rafah Salameh, the leader of Hamas forces in Khan Younis, who Israeli officials say was also targeted in the attack, was unclear.

Israeli strikes in Gaza have since killed 38,345 Palestinians and injured another 88,295 people, according to the Ministry of Health there. “I don’t know what crime civilians did to deserve this,” one resident, Tareq Ghanem, told CNN on Friday. The United States plans to authorize part of a weapons shipment to Israel that it had withheld in the spring over concerns about civilian casualties in Gaza, a U.S. official said on Thursday. The official, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue, said that the United States would send 1,700 500-pound bombs that had been held up because they were part of a shipment that had also included 1,800 2,000-pound bombs, which the country has chosen not to ship to Israel. It was the first time that Mr. Biden tried to influence Israel’s approach to the war by using his power to curtail arms. The United States will continue to withhold 2,000-pound bombs out of concerns over the civilian deaths or injuries that they could cause in Gaza, the official said. A New York Times investigation in December found that American 2,000-pound bombs were responsible for some of the worst harm to Palestinian civilians since the war in Gaza began after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7.

CNN —The Biden administration is allowing a shipment of 500-pound bombs to be sent to Israel, after it was paused more than two months ago, a US official said. The initial decision to halt a shipment of both 2,000-pound and 500-pound bombs was due to US concerns about Israel using the heavy munitions – specifically the larger 2,000-pound bombs – in their Rafah operation. One shipment of the 2,000-pound bombs remains on hold. That’s what happened here with the 500-pound bombs since our main concern had been – and remains – the potential use of 2,000-pound bombs in Rafah and elsewhere in Gaza,” the official said. “Because our concern was not about the 500-pound bombs, those are moving forward as part of the usual process,” the official added.

CNN —Yet again, tens of thousands of people in Gaza are on the move, as the Israeli military issues fresh evacuation orders for a number of areas in Gaza City. It’s unclear how many people in Gaza City have heeded the latest evacuation order. The IDF confirmed to CNN that the evacuation order for parts of Gaza City was the third in the past 10 days. On July 2, the Israeli authorities clarified that the European Hospital in Khan Younis was not included in the evacuation order. Now, one of the main hospitals in Gaza City – the Al Ahli Baptist – has also closed its doors.

Last week, a US official told CNN that a framework agreement is “in place” and talks resumed Friday in Doha. Hatem Khaled/ReutersOn Thursday, a senior US administration told CNN that the framework for a deal is “now in place,” following a call between Biden and Netanyahu. Hamas has long demanded that Israel agree to a permanent ceasefire before signing any deal, which Israel has so far refused. Netanyahu also said there will be “no return of thousands of armed terrorists to the northern Gaza Strip,” the statement said. “If the Americans are still optimistic (after Netanyahu’s Sunday statement), then they are really living in La La land,” Baskin told CNN.

But Mr. Netanyahu’s statement on Sunday night dampened those expectations, since it appeared to lessen the chances of a compromise with Hamas over the length and permanence of the cease-fire. Mr. Netanyahu’s grip on power relies on the support of two far-right parties opposed to any agreement that would leave Hamas in power in Gaza. “The efforts of the military in Gaza may help him get more from Hamas,” Mr. Shtrauchler said. Additionally, Mr. Netanyahu may be trying to stave off the collapse of his coalition until the end of July, when Parliament goes on recess. “He’s trying to create room for maneuver — and for that, he needs time,” Mr. Shtrauchler said.

The armed convoy of jeeps filled with reporters rumbled into a dusty Rafah, passing flattened houses and battered apartment buildings. As we dismounted our Humvees, a stillness gripped this swath of southern Gaza, near the border with Egypt. More than a million people have fled to avoid an Israeli onslaught that began two months ago. As Israel says it is winding down its operation against Hamas in Rafah, the Israeli military invited foreign journalists into the city on a supervised visit. The military says that it has fought with precision and restraint against Hamas fighters embedded in civilian areas.

But CNN cannot independently verify his claims: Israel has barred foreign journalists from entering Gaza independently and our only access is via embeds with the Israeli military. He won’t say exactly how long Israeli forces will need to occupy this corridor, but says it could be weeks or months. Jeremy Diamond/CNNHagari also says Israeli forces killed more than 900 Hamas fighters in Rafah and are close to defeating Hamas’s Rafah brigade. CNN —A former spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces has sharply criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s conduct of the war against Hamas, in the latest sign of growing tensions between the military and the government. “Netanyahu promised a complete victory over Hamas,” he said. “Hamas damaged almost all the power lines that connect Gaza to Israel,” he said. CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday the country’s military is nearing the “end of the stage of eliminating” Hamas’ army in Gaza. We are advancing to the end of the stage of eliminating the Hamas terrorist army; we will continue striking its remnants,” Netanyahu said, speaking to a group of mainly Israeli and international military officials studying at the National Security College. Netanyahu said last month that the “intense phase of the war with Hamas (in Gaza) is about to end,” and that the military’s focus could then shift to Israel’s northern border with Lebanon. “It doesn’t mean that the war is going to end, but the war in its current stage is going to end in Rafah. Israel and Egypt agreed to allow at least 19 sick children, most of them cancer patients, to leave Gaza for medical treatment on Thursday, Israeli and Palestinian officials said, in the first major evacuation of critically ill Gazans since the Rafah border crossing shut down in early May. The Israeli military said the operation had been carried out in coordination with the United States, Egypt and the international community. In total, 68 people — sick and injured patients and their escorts — were allowed to leave, the military said. They include those wounded in airstrikes, as well as cancer patients, children with life-threatening illnesses and older people who need open-heart surgery. Even before the war, many Gazans were forced to travel abroad for lifesaving treatments, like chemotherapy, which were almost nonexistent in the Gaza Strip.
