According to multiple sources familiar with the Tuesday lunch meeting, McConnell warned GOP senators that they could face “incoming” from the “center-right” if they signed onto Hawley’s bill. On that list of senators: Hawley himself, according to sources familiar with the matter. But there’s also no love lost between McConnell and Hawley, who has long criticized the GOP leader and has repeatedly called for new leadership atop their conference. In an interview, Hawley defended his bill and said that corporate influence should be limited in elections. “I think that’s wrong,” Hawley told CNN.

Dianne Feinstein's seat on the Judiciary committee is now empty in the wake of her death. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn the wake of Sen. Dianne Feinstein's death, questions are swirling over how the California Democrat's now-empty seat on the Senate Judiciary Committee will be filled. In order to change the membership of any Senate committee, the chamber has to pass a resolution to make that change official. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer can do so via a simple voice vote if no Republicans object to the change. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio said it was up to Republicans on the Judiciary Committee and that he would "probably support" whatever decision they made.

Wisconsin Republicans are floating the potential impeachment of state Supreme Court judge Janet Protasiewicz. Republicans are arguing that Protasiewicz must recuse herself from redistricting cases over her comments. Earlier this year, the possibility of Protasiewicz sitting on the court and turning a conservative-leaning court into one with a liberal majority animated Republicans. Republicans now enjoy a 64-35 majority in the state Assembly and a 22-11 supermajority in the state Senate, despite Wisconsin being a perennial battleground state. CNN —Much remains unknown of course about the presidential general election whose traditional kick-off will come one year from today on Labor Day, 2024. Twenty states have likewise voted for the GOP presidential nominee in all four of those contests. That means 40 of the 50 states, or 80%, have voted the same way in four consecutive presidential elections. In the presidential elections of 2012, 2016 and 2020, though, the states where the margin of victory landed within four points of the national vote total dwindled. Eventually a Democratic choice to write off Florida and Ohio could provide a tactical benefit for the GOP presidential nominee.

Every company has to start somewhere, and for Uline, that beginning was 1980 in the Illinois basement of Dick and Liz Uihlein. Dick Uihlein started Uline to sell a product called a carton sizer, "one of the neatest little tools I'd ever seen." Bit by bit, the Uihleins added more packing supplies to their selection and slashed delivery times to the minimum — a decade before Jeff Bezos launched Amazon. "It's weird to develop a love of corrugated boxes and shipping supplies, but I really enjoy it," Liz told the Milwaukee BizTimes in 2020. The Uihlein family as featured on the Uline website.

A week before Republicans visit Milwaukee for their first debate of the 2024 campaign, President Biden traveled to the city on Tuesday and attacked not former President Donald J. Trump or his Republican primary rivals, but Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. Mr. Biden spent several minutes contrasting his political record with that of Mr. Johnson, a Republican who has long expressed skepticism about government investment in local manufacturing jobs. “Ron Johnson, he believes outsourcing jobs is a great thing,” Mr. Biden said. “He doesn’t think American workers should manufacture products that require a lot of labor.”Mr. Biden’s sustained attack on Mr. Johnson, who won re-election last year to a third term that won’t end until 2029, served as a stand-in for an attack on Mr. Trump. The indictment on Monday of Mr. Trump in Georgia, the fourth brought against the former president, loomed heavy over the effort by the White House and the Biden campaign to promote his economic agenda, which they have taken to calling “Bidenomics.”

These wins are poised to threaten GOP competitiveness in key states like Georgia and Wisconsin in 2024 and beyond. And Biden won Athens-Clarke with a whopping 70%-28% victory, posting a nearly 22,000-vote margin over Trump. In 2016, Trump won Wisconsin by less than 1 percent of the vote. In 2000, Gore won Wisconsin by less than 6,000 votes (48.8%-48.6%) and won Dane by nearly 67,000 votes (61%-33%) over Bush. Sen. Ron Johnson told Insider in May that he had "no intentions" of recouping old campaign loans. But before that, he'd already done so — receiving $400,000 from his campaign after raising money for it. When asked by Insider in May if he would seek to recoup any of those loans, Johnson indicated that he wouldn't. That included a total of $210,000 to repay loans he made during his 2010 campaign, and $190,000 to repay loans he made during his 2016 campaign. New York CNN —Two top officials of the PGA Tour said the sport’s governing body had no choice but to reach a truce in its yearlong battle with LIV Golf and try to reach a merger with the Saudi-funded tour. But Ron Price, the chief operating officer of the PGA Tour, and Jimmy Dunne, a board member of the tour’s governing body, both said that the framework of the planned merger was the best chance to allow the PGA Tour to keep some measure of control over the sport. He pointed out that the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which is funding LIV Golf, has 500 times the financial resources as the PGA Tour. “It would be grossly unfair to expect the PGA Tour to bear the full burden of holding Saudi Arabia accountable. The committee released a 276 page report with details of the legal battle and the negotiations between LIV and the PGA Tour.

Representatives from LIV Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund wasn't present at the hearing because CEO Greg Norman is out of the country, according to a spokesperson. Dunne and Price said they believed the PGA Tour would benefit the most from the proposed deal. The PGA Tour would manage competitions, and has said it is leading the negotiations to reach a finalized deal.

A top PGA official said golfers would still be able to criticize Saudi Arabia if the tour merges with LIV Golf. Blumenthal also accused the PGA of selling out to the controversial Saudi league. Blumenthal pointed to the fact that initial agreement between the PGA and LIV Golf has a broad non-disparagement clause. Blumenthal cited this record in calling out the PGA for selling out for the LIV merger. He and PGA Tour member Jimmy Dunne, who helped broker an initial agreement with LIV Golf, also repeatedly stressed that the PGA felt it had little choice but to try to find as peace with LIV.

"Given the well-chronicled legal disputes that have existed between the PGA Tour and PIF, we understand the fair and valid questions raised by PGA Tour members, Tour partners, media, fans and now Congress," Price said in the op-ed. Stephenson stepped down as lawmakers appeared likely to start a broad probe into the merger between the PGA Tour and LIV, beginning with Tuesday's Senate hearing. Two top PGA officials will testify before Congress about the association's controversial merger. Tour COO Rob Price is among the officials that will testify before a Senate subcommittee on July 11. "We look forward to appearing before the Senate Subcommittee to answer their questions about the framework agreement that keeps the PGA TOUR as the leader of professional golf's future and benefits our players, our fans, and our sport," PGA Tour spokesperson Joel Schuchmann said in a statement to Insider. Norman played an integral role in LIV golf, enduring public criticism for taking on the PGA and partnering with Al-Rumayyan. The PGA Tour, DP World Tour and rival Saudi-backed LIV circuit, which had been involved in a bitter fight that split the sport, announced an agreement in early June to merge and form a unified commercial entity. The LIV Golf series is bankrolled by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIV). Blumenthal and Johnson said they had asked Greg Norman, CEO of LIV Golf, and Yasir al-Rumayyan, governor of the Saudi Public Investment Fund which backs LIV, to testify, but they had declined because of scheduling conflicts.
