I found myself at the movies this year more often than last. And though neither metric has yet rebounded to prepandemic levels, it finally feels like the movies are, in some sense, back. Maybe it was the monotony of at-home streaming or just the desire to finally get off the couch. A quick scan of The New York Times’s list of the year’s best movies makes the point. The films, picked by the critics Manohla Dargis and Alissa Wilkinson, span a number of genres, including dramas and biopics.

I saw hundreds of new films with a variety of plots and styles made on every imaginable scale and budget. The movies have ostensibly been at death’s door at least since the shift to sync sound, which isn’t to undersell the industry’s business woes. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” was “cursed,” read one headline; “‘Mission: Impossible 7’ falls short of expectations,” ran another. The moaning in the trades gave way to klaxon horns when much of SAG-AFTRA went on strike on July 14. This year also reminded us that a mass audience will happily get out of the house for movies without superheroes.

I’ll say straight off: It’s not architecture for the ages, but it’s an interesting, high-end model of an urban quad and a good example of how struggling downtowns are finding a glimmer of hope as satellite campuses. In design jargon, the term is “adaptive reuse,” which is the same story as turning empty office towers into apartment buildings. Universities like Hopkins are not the ultimate cure-all for what now ails downtowns across America, though, especially since they don’t pay property taxes like for-profit companies. Downtowns are still struggling. WeWork, which presently rents more office space than any other company in the United States, filed for bankruptcy this month.

A federal judge has made a decision in a dispute between relatives of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s press secretary over ownership of four Norman Rockwell drawings that hung for decades in the White House. The drawings — titled “So You Want to See the President!” — show a range of figures, including a Scottish military officer, a beauty pageant winner and a U.S. senator, all waiting at the White House for an audience with Roosevelt. Rockwell gave the originals of the drawings, which were published in The Saturday Evening Post, to the president’s press secretary, Stephen T. Early. One drawing depicts Early with a pipe clenched between his teeth, facing a clutch of reporters. The court case focused on who in the family had inherited the drawings from Early, with some relatives saying that they had been unaware until recently that the works had been on loan to the White House since 1978.

Approximately half of the S & P 500 companies have reported their earnings so far — and the magnitude of their average earnings-day move has been larger than normal, according to Goldman Sachs. The average earnings-day move for companies had an absolute value of 4.2%, the firm said in a Tuesday note. Amid a period of heightened macro volatility, the investment bank highlighted the bearish strategy of buying puts on stocks with weak fundamental backdrops. Below are some of the names Goldman believes have downward bias to earnings-day moves over the coming days. Goldman said it sees value in buying puts on Airbnb , which is scheduled to announce its quarterly earnings after the market close on Wednesday.

Oct, 25 (Reuters) - Fortive (FTV.N), whose industrial measurement equipment and software-enabled automation are used in a range of industries, cut its full-year profit forecast on Wednesday due to inflationary pressures and ongoing supply chain snarls. The company, whose technology is used in industries ranging from hospitals to construction and broadcast to food, now expects full-year earnings per share of $2.30 to $2.33. It had forecast earningws of $2.38 to $2.44 per share earlier. Those depositing cases include China, Dominican Republic, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Pakistan, South Korea and the United States. The result is a growing disregard for global trading rules among WTO members. Countries have taken advantage of exceptions to WTO rules, such as for national security used by the United States to limit metal imports and some Gulf states to restrict trade with Qatar. Beijing has restricted exports of critical minerals, while Washington has sought to prevent Chinese access to U.S. technology, with national security trumping global trading rules.

Despite its ubiquity, the play has had only one other Off Broadway production since its premiere — in 2004, starring Adam Rothenberg and Rosemarie DeWitt — and there has never been a Broadway production. “I think a lot of plays have failed on Broadway because they were really meant to be Off Broadway,” said Rockwell, who is working on the show with his producing partner Mark Berger. It’s about two damaged, shame-ridden people trying to find a way out of their own misery. “There are all different kinds of love stories, and this is just one of them,” Plaza said. “And I don’t like the idea that every piece of art that’s out there has to have some kind of social commentary or political message.

Political violence in polarized U.S. at its worst since 1970s

Three academics who reviewed the cases say they add to growing evidence that America is grappling with the biggest and most sustained increase in political violence since the 1970s. Political violence surged for nearly a decade starting in the late-1960s – 1970 alone saw more than 450 cases, LaFree said. In contrast, much of today’s political violence is aimed at people – and most of the deadly outbursts tracked by Reuters have come from the right. “Political warfare”There’s no official tally of how many Americans die each year from political violence. Most of the fatal political violence identified by Reuters was carried out by people who embraced far-right views.
